  1. Go to K&J Magnetics and score around 30 neodimium magnets... the small coin shaped ones about 5/8" in diameter and 1/4" tall. An array of clamps from the hardware store... the plastic pinch clamps, maybe a few of the Irwin ratcheting kind. Some Blue painter's masking tape, and around two tubes of E-6000. Not sure what others will suggest here but I have utilized 1/8" rivets for my knee bandolier and knee plate only.

The strips should come with the kit, They should be 15mm for arms and 20mm for legs (unless I've overlooked any strip width discussions).

The E-6000 is flexable and aids in keeping the armor from cracking at the flex joints. It's also tough and strong. my .02

Does the ATA kit come with the finishing strips and shims?

    Thanks!

  2. Hello everyone,

I will be putting in my order for an ATA set in the next couple of weeks, but I would like to get everything I need to prevent any delays in assembling. I read that the ATA suit pieces have to be butt jointed with finishing strips....does the kit come with these strips? Will i need a rivet gun, and if so what rivets do i need to buy. As far as glue goes, all i have now is a new tube of E-6000...will this be all i need? Please feel free to suggest things i may want to pick up for the build.

    Thanks for the help!

  3. yes you will have to paint the ears and chin yourself, also the teeth.. its alot easier to paint the ears with pinstripe tape... most people will say that it looks better painted, you should sand and prime first then use a brand of gloss white paint that is meant for plastic like rust-oleum or krylon

edit: btw the ata helmet does not come with decals, get some here http://members.cox.net/appstronaut/tk4510_decals.html or hand paint them

Does the ATA kit come with the canister for the back? If not where can i pick one up.

    Thanks

  4. Hello everyone,

I will soon be buying an ATA armor set, and had a couple of questions. I know that most helmets come with the decals, but am I right to assume that i will still have to paint the ears and the chin? I found a really helpful paint color guide here on the site that i will use if it is true. Also, the ATA suit is HIPS plastic and that I will have to paint or polish it. Which would be easiest or look best? If I have to paint it, what paint brand is recommended?

    Thanks for your help

  5. Hello everyone,

I plan on ordering a suit of ATA armor in the next month or so, and I had a couple of questions. I want to be able to join the 501st, so I want to be able to do things right and how they should be the first time around, and not have to go back and change anything, but I looked at the CRL here on the site and there are so many different variations I don't know where to start. What would be the best (easiest) to accomplish with a set of ATA between ANH, ESB, ROTJ and etc.

Also, "Applicants should contact their GML for all costume requirements." What does GML stand for?

Lastly, what is shimming? I imagine its trimming or cutting the armor or something to that effect, but i haven't been able to find anything about it specifically here on the site.

    Thanks for your help.

  6. Thanks all! :) One quick update for tonight: I drilled out the extra row of holes on the port side of the blaster. I'm fairly happy with the result:

Jim, for glue I bought E6000 based on reading several of the build threads here. For filler I bought Bondo Body Filler. I've never used it before so I'm a little nervous about ending up sealing the blaster to our dining room table.

What drill bit did you use for those holes?

  7. Hello everyone, I have been reading up on this site for a little over a week now and I have come across so many abbreviations that I am finally giving in and asking for someone to lay them all out of me.

Can you guys please tell me what all the abbreviations on this site mean? I would ask about some specifically but I have seen so many I don't know where to begin. Please tell me all the ones you can think of.

    Thanks for your help!

  8. Hello everyone,

While im saving up the money for my first suit of armor, I thought I would get started on a Hasbro and the doopydoo kit. I have ordered them both today, but I had a few questions about things I need before they arrive.

I read on a separate post that E-6000 craft glue is recommended, is this still what everyone thinks I should use?

Also, I plan on further modding it with some actual Allen bolts (what size would i need?), as well as the wires for the Hengstler box (where can I get wires that curl like they should? a corded telephone?)

I would also like to weather this when I am done, so how should i paint this? Im guessing I use silver as a base, then paint it black and lightly sand it to reveal the silver in some areas.

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to have most of what I need when they arrive.

    Thanks for your help

  9. You're basically my height and weight exactly and TE2 fits me like a living glove! No shimming or anything.

ATA is based on the TE lineage so it should do very well.

But, my advice is KEEP reading and researching to make sure you know what you want.

You may have already done that, but it's better to be anxious because you're dying to get it than sorry you rushed.

Ask yourself — if you haven't already — how important are these things to you?

    • Price
    • Material (HIPS vs. ABS)
    • Accuracy (screen vs. idealized)
    • Availability (sooner now or possibly better later)
    • Lineage

Read the links in my signature for more info too... but, yes, assuming ATA is similar to TE2 — which I've heard it is — it should fit you great.

Will I be able to get the ATA to meet 501st standards?

  10. Hello everyone,

I am new here on the forums and have been looking at the various sets that are recommended on here. I am considering buying an ATA set, but before I do I want to know if it will be able to fit my body type. I am 5ft 11, and i weigh 195lbs. I am not skinny and I'm not large either, just kinda in the middle.

Thanks in advance, and hopefully i put this in the right forum section.

  11. Hi Michael, welcome to the FISD!

Sounds like you have been doing some homework which is first and foremost the key to finding a kit that will work for you the best. I know you said you want to buy the cheapest kit because this is your first suit and you don't want to put a lot in it if you mess things up. There is nothing wrong with anyone of the suits that is on the list that you found here. Everyone on the list has a good reputation and a good product. The one thing that I want to stress to you is that certain suits are made for certain body types.

AP, TE2, ATA, Cap-West, and TM are going to be for a guy with an average size build. Where as, RT-Mod and AM are going to be for the larger size or possibly big and tall. Before jumping into a price point, make sure that you are getting a kit that is going to fit you. If you will post your height and weight we can kinda point you in the right direction for what kit or kits will work best for your body frame.

Another factor that you might want to look at is that some kits are made from ABS and will not need to be painted and some are made from HIPS, which will need to be painted to look screen accurate.

Some people feel that HIPS is easier to trim than ABS, which it is because of the molecular configuration of the HIPS material that makes it a little more flexible than ABS when you are talking the guages that most of this armor is made from. Most armor is made from in 0.80 to 0.90 gauge material. With the HIPS you have to go through some prep stages for painting. Basically if you don't have the skills or maybe the time or just don't want to have to paint then maybe an ABS suit would be your choice. The ABS may take some people a little longer to trim but the time factor of both materials is offset by having to prep and paint as opposed as to taking longer to trim.

All in all, either way you go, just take your time and consider which material is going to be easier for you to work with.

My suggestion would also be to hook up with your local 501st Garrison. You didn't mention where you are located or I could have given you the direct link for your local Garrison. They are more than happy to give you hands on help, advice and you can see their armor up close as well. When you do decide on what kit you are going with, check to see when your local Garrison may be having an armor party. So if you are squeemish about messing something up,they will be right there for you.

If you have questions or need help, we are here for you as well.

    Make yourself at home.

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

As far as my size, I am 6ft and 195lbs. I also I feel confidant I could handle painting and any assembly that would be required. Which set would you recommend? Would the ATA kit work well for me?

I found the Carolina Garrison, and I checked out the photos on their website. They have been to several areas around me (even my town), so I think I will contact them once I get my armor if I need some sort of help.

    Thanks for all the help!

  12. Hello everyone, I have been looking at this site for a while and find it second to none as far as tutorials and valuable information goes. I have been a star wars fan since I was a kid, and I have always wanted my own suit of armor, and I think I am ready to make the purchase of a kit to assemble. I looked at the recommended sellers list and have sent some emails, but can anyone give me a general idea of how much the different kits cost? While I hate to say that I want to purchase the cheapest, I think for my first suit it would probably be a good idea in case I mess something up. Regardless, I plan on purchasing the kit from someone here on whitearmor.net, because without the site I never would have decided to do it. (thanks to all the awesome tutorials that will definitely come in handy)

    Thanks in advance,

    Michael
