Filling ABS hand platges?

I seem to remember a thread from a long time ago that discussed 'filling' an abs/plastic handplate to give more surface are for elastics/velcro attachment and to make it look thicker. Am I imaging things?

I can't recall one

 

Here's one on making latex hand plates

 

Normally the area under the hand plate is enough to glue elastic straps or velcro too so I'm not sure why it would need filling
