Whitejob77 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Share Posted February 28, 2011 Hi everyone, Been reading up on these forums and chit chatting with some of you folks for a few weeks now, while anxiously awaiting my "YAY! Box" from Rob. (I would just like to take this moment to confirm all the wonderful, great, awesome things people say about Rob, his product and his service. Cheers, man!) Rob wrote me today and told me Christmas will be coming in early March for my buddy and myself. About a month ago, I called my friend and told him I had my finger hovering over a button that would make me a proud owner of a stormtrooper suit. I'm SOOO glad he made me wait. After further investigation, we found: the 501st would not accept that suit, FISD web site and all its glory (U people), and a few friends along the way. Seriously, this site is a treasure and without you folks it wouldn't be here to help armor noob SW fiends like my friend and I. (Cheers to u!) So anyway.. ahem... The "Yay! Box" should be on my front porch within the next 3-5 days. My buddy, whom is donating his wonderful garage and hospitality to the project, and myself have requested a few days off from work (and our befuddled girlfriends) to do this right. We've been collecting random yummies for the last few weeks, which include: -Under suits -gloves -neck seals (being shipped tomorrow, yay!) -TK boots -E6000 -dremel tools (That's right, plural, love em) -Industrial velcro -rivet gun (Borrowed from a friend's dad... was fired in a war or two, I hear) -painters tape -utility knives -spring clamps -sand paper (Various degrees of coarseness) -kerosene space heater, saltine crackers and cheese (nostalgia of days past and being poor, lol) Still need: -Blaster (gonna try making one from scratch, a pipe/resin kit and possibly order a prefab one to hack apart and mod.) -holster -helmet fans, voice amp/bender and other helmet bling (saw a thread on fans. Looked fantastic. Will be checking that out more) Its late, I've just gotten off a 18hr on call shift, with another 30+ hrs to go till I am relieved. I need sleep, so forgive my lack of pics, omitted items and general lack of luster on this post. I just wanted to get this started so I could ask you all a couple things as soon as possible. The "YAY! Box" is coming soon after all =P Questions 1) I wanna get some rare earth magnets to help keep consistent pressure while the E6000 forms its bonds. How many lbs of pressure is adequate? I don't wanna leave outlines of the magnets or damage the abs, but I want the job done. Any suggestions or previous experience here? 2) I think I read somewhere about the rivets used on the ab and kidney pieces, but I can't recall the size used. Was it 1/8? Any bigger and I'll be scared to use that thing... I fear it was blood soaked at one time already anyhow... scary... eh? 3) Regarding the helmet, hardhat insert vrs pure foam? Hybrid of the two? Heat, comfort and style... Whose got some words for me? Ok, my eyes are drying out and I need sleep. Will get back here every few hours tomorrow. Appreciate any and all help, folks. I have no finger nails left, the anxiety of waiting is killing me, lol. This is gonna b so much fun. Years of waiting and yearning... My mother tells me I was in the womb when she saw ANH in the theater. I think the sound effects warped my brain a bit, cause I've always wanted to be a whitejob! Here we go! To answer your questions... #1, someone else can answer that... #2, do you mean the "side rivets?" If so, they're actually brads if you want to look accurate.... and #3, foam, all the way. I've been looking at some foam padding for military healmets, as well as some of the left over 1" sheet foam I have left from my paintball marker case. My buddy thinks the hard hat rig will offer more air movement, but I wasn't sold on the idea. Foam seems like it'd be alot more comfy. Anyway, as for the brads. Looks a hell of a lot easier to fuss with, but will the 501 have issues? The costume reference library states: "Rivets on the left side of the ab/kidney plates: a total of six rivets with three on the ab and three on the kidney plate, equally spaced out along the depth of the armour and about 10mm from the edge. They may be painted white, or not". I just wanna get it right so I don't screw up this oppertunity. Brads would be sooo much easier, but... should I ask the local GML? Appreciate your imput! Really, I do! Ordered some 20-25lb magnets today. Figure if they are too strong I can insulate them with paint mixing sticks to reduce the pinch. Whitejob77 Posted March 5, 2011 Author Report Share Posted March 5, 2011 Alright! The YaY! Box came today, the other one should come tomorrow. Wore my bucket for about 4hours today. Scared the neighbor when I got the mail and got cheers at the bar my friend works at when I picked him up after his shift. Grabbing the last of supplies early tomorrow and gonna put a few hours into it in the evening. Would still like to get a confirmation on the brads/rivet 501st requirement issue. After opening the YaY box and taking a quick inventory, I REALLY must say, Rob hooks you up! Not only was the helmet absolutely "Ready to wear" it looks great and looks like its gonna be easy to convert to an ESB build. All the remaining parts are wrapped and packaged neatly, and was I ever surprised to find velcro, nylon and other supplies included! Along with the friendly and helpful service/communications, I highly recommend dealing with Rob (RT-Mod armor). We have three days off from work to get it done right or atleast get a good start on it. As the time draws slowly closer to friday, a few more questions have come up. I read a thread a few days ago about a trooper who mod'ed his helm, more spicifically his lens and I can't find it again! I wear glasses and I keep snagging them on this tubing that wraps around the lense in my RT helm. We're converting to ESB and have to replace the lens anyhow. I have it on order, hopefully arrives soon, woot! Anyway, I read this thread, the trooper used some sort of putty to form pegs that matched the height of the eye indentions, baked them (at like 400degrees or so)to make them solid plastic(?), then glued them into his bucket as posts to screw his lens snuggly into place. I think this may solve my glasses issue. Anyone know what that putty to plastic stuff is called? Might not turn to plastic, maybe into something else which can hold a screw if predrilled. Eric- You found it! Thanks man! I thought it was a brilliant idea the first time I read htrough it. Later, when my box arrived, I put the bucket on and scared my dog for a bit. When I took the bucket off my glasses snagged that liner and it hasn't wanted to stay put since. I think that'll be a wonderful mod. Thanks again, man. This site, these forums, you folks have been flippin awesome and informative through all this si far. Appreciate it greatly! Will def check out your RT thread too. Anyway, I've got a ton of pics to post of our tape fitting, we used the "more screen accurate, white duck tape" hehe, it made all the difference. ALL he difference. I got a few questions to run by you all before we do anything else. Nothing too rediculous, but still, being anal about this is part of the fun. Just found a usb cord, so will try to upload some pics here. I want to get some gluing done today. Has anyone found it to be easier or smarter to trim before or after you glue the front seam of pieces? (thigh, greave, forearm, bicep, etc) I'm not quite as tall as my buddy, suit fits him pretty darn perfect without much trimming, but I'll be doing a chop down to get it to fit me nice and neat. I'd really like the idea of gluing that front seam before trimming. Just seems like it would be nice to have a solid, no moving piece to work from, instead of trimming then noticing a shift in the front seam. Your right, after looking Again at the pieces, some (thighes and biceps) would look better having a little taken off the front and then some off the back. As for the ab and kidney plates, I got a lot of over lap here... which is nice to some degree, but concerning. I want them to but, like described in the 501st requirement page, but leaving a little over lap, for eventual expanding of my beer baby would be nice too. Any suggestions?
