  1. I think the "three consistent depictions, front and back" thing is also somewhat in play. Technically, a lot can be presumed from him being largely just a FOTK repaint, with a cape like the mirror image of Phasma's. The text clarifies some things, like what kind of blaster he wears on his thigh and that he has armor plates on his boots the same color as the rest of his armor... But what that armor looks like is presumption, based on Phasma. What color his boots are, likewise. What color his sidearm blaster is, too. His cape is tripartite inconsistent -- Del wanted it the same as Phasma's (direction and colors), as they're both First Order Captains; higher-ups disagreed and directed the cover art to mirror Phasma, the cape worn the opposite direction, and with a pewter-gray stripe, the stripe and armor colors inverted between them; then the B&N poster art shows no cape stripe at all.

So I can see the hangups on locking in a CRL, much as it frustrates me.

Painter put a black brow on the helmet, not a major issue.

It's... not an issue at all? He's got a black brow like every other FOTK.

Still need to finish the cloak and get the boot armor. KB Props is taking forever, ordered it 7 weeks ago and have got nothing yet and I've asked for updates twice now.

Yeah, I ordered my boot armor from him back in December. Never said a peep about being about to move his shop. Mid-February I nudged him for an update, and he said he should have it pulled by "the end of the week". As of today, still nothing further on that front. *sigh*

Is someone currently working on trying to make this a CRL since we do have one completed costume so far?

Or are there more then just Hal here that's finished it?

You'll make the second one once you're finished, that I know of. There might be more out there, but they haven't mentioned or shown anything on here or the RPF or Facebook or anywhere else I've seen. Several in progress that I know of, including mine. I don't know if anyone knows anything about the status of the CRL. Only thing I notice about your kit is that you have red boots. Nothing in the text or art to indicate, but Del felt they were black when I asked her about it. She never sat down and did a detailed run-down of Cardinal's armor and gear when she wrote the book, and doesn't have any strong opinions about stuff that isn't explicit in the text or art or where there are contradictions. I tried to be as non-leading as possible when asking them. Pointed out the lack of clarity on this or that point, listed the options people had come up with, went with her answer. For the boots, she had the Phasma-style black boots with contrasting armor in the back of her mind when she was writing the one specific mention of Cardinal's feet. FWIW.

I am glad I caught it now. I been pouring over the Armor of phasma. and I am becoming an phasma expert.

Have you already joined the Phasma group on FB? A lot of folks on here are on there, but it's not a 100% overlap. Might also poke your head in on the Replica Props Forum. I haven't delved as much as some, so I don't know who might know what -- but sharing insights, discoveries, and revelations as widely as possible so others may benefit is probably one of my favorite aspects of this hobby.

FYI the two things that changed from TFA and TLJ are the gloves and the spats are now standard Stormtrooper spats. [...] Can you message me about your build? I would like to hear about it.

First part is definitely relevant to this thread, but not to me. :) Cardinal was beaten by Phasma and left sometime prior to TFA, so as much as some of the changes for TLJ might help me, I can't use them.  I can message you about my build, but there's not much to say yet. I've accumulated a lot of the supplies, and peripheral pieces such as gloves and boots and neck seal and R2Dan's magnificent holster upgrade (and undersuit and cape are staged for purchase)... But I'm still waiting on the actual armor and it's driving me nuts. I'll be starting my actual build thread as soon as I have even one more component to work with. But I'm happy to babble about theory:P Let me know.

  4. Thank you. :) I'd actually managed to completely miss that, despite having pored over the V.D. pic, that publicity shot above, and all the screen grabs I have. Since I'm doing sabatons for my Cardinal build, this saved me the heartache of realizing I'd done them wrong (since I'm still waiting on KB for them). Plans revising accordingly...

  5. Inspired by @Ruthar's helmet mods, I sought out the same helmet liner he used for his ANOVOS Standard helmet -- Scorpion's replacement liner pieces for their EXO-CT110 motorcycle half helmet.

And you can see what he did with it here, if you haven't already.

Sadly, it seems to be a discontinued thing. There are newer versions out there that aren't quite the same. Mainly in their lack of the ear pads. But I ran across a dealer's lot on the 'Bay of a bunch in all adult sizes but 3XL for pretty cheap. They should be here by next Friday, and I need to check to see whether M or L fits me better (I'm right on the cusp, per their sizing). I also need to check outside circumferences of all of them to be able to advise for or against a particular size's use. But I will have at least some extras to make available. I intend to only keep one of the size I need and swap between helmets. This isn't an interest thread -- just making people aware so they con figure out whether they might want one. I'll post an actual sale thread when I have them in hand and evaluated, with feedback from folks on here.

Here's Scorpion's size chart for folks to see what size might work for anyone who might be pondering. The Medium is what Ruthar went with, so it definitely fits and -- obviously -- anything smaller would, too, possibly with additional thin padding to aid snug fit between liner and helmet for the XS. This is where I need some help from folks on here. For the larger sizes, I don't know if I'll be able to determine whether they'll work before I have my own ANOVOS bucket in hand. To say nothing of other makers' helmets. If folks would be willing to furnish me with internal circumferences at the brow line of whichever make of FOTK helmet you have, I'll be able to check that against my measurements of the larger liners when they arrive. The more are able to be used, the lower I can bring the price point.

    Thanks in advance. :)

  6. As I am building a Cardinal costume, I have the ANOVOS Standard Line kit on order, plus I had to secure boot armor. I initially approached Jimmi, as I didn't yet know about other vendors doing Phasma stuff. After he replied to my initial enquiry in the affirmative, he said he'd get back to me with a price and that was the last I was able to elicit a response from him, via any avenue. That was six months ago.

I since moved on to KB, who also answered in the affirmative, and gave a price point. I ordered a set of Phasma boot armor in December. Then he moved his shop (which I hadn't known he was about to do). I waited until some times after he was set up and running again before reminding him I was here -- not impatiently. He assured me he'd have the pieces pulled by "the end of the week". That was mid-February. Since then no word on those, though I have asked him about other things and gotten prompt responses. I don't know if my order has fallen victim to his supply issues. He hasn't replied to that question.

Until I can tackle my stupidly-ambitious plans for an eventual SE-44C blaster, I am going with 850's. They weren't listing it as in stock, so I asked about it and they said they'd be able to cast one up for me no problem, but it'd be a couple weeks. That was late December. When I asked mid-February how it was going, they sent a pic of blaster bits next to my printed-out order. After another couple weeks of no shipping notice, I asked again -- also not impatiently -- and they said they'd accidentally 3D-printed a Death Trooper SE-14C, and those were the parts pictured. They were in the midst of doing the right blaster. I mentally noted 3D printing is different from casting, but I care less about the method than the accuracy, and I trust them on that front. I can work with either.

Meanwhile, back on the ANOVOS front, we're all still waiting, yes. But I've been following what's been happening throughout, and am hopful they'll make their current -- if vague -- target of beginning shipping in the March 21-June 20 range. All the delays have been armor-related. The helmets are already done and approved and on-site. The soft goods that ship with the armor kit -- the joint gaskets, the belt, and the pouches -- haven't hit any snags and are, as far as I know, all approved and waiting on-site, as well. The last update we had on the armor was in February, when they said they were going to miss their previous March 20 target. My only concern is some last-minute downcheck from Disney screwing things up. At which point, I might drive down to L.A. and just ask for it minus the packaging. :P

So I guess my takeaway from those vendors is... Mixed reviews? I am ultimately glad Jimmi went quiet on me, as I prefer working with plastic over fiberglass. I trust KB, 850, and ANOVOS to all eventually deliver and, while I'm impatient to get started working on these things, I have plenty to work on at home already, and I'm not going to die, go to jail, lose my job, have kidnappers kill my loved one, or otherwise have dire consequences for having to wait to get my plastic soldier dress-up pieces. I've waited up to two years before, and I'm not even to the one-year mark yet with ANOVOS, let alone the rest. So I'm in the balance point between frustrated and sanguine.

  7. One (hopefully) last thing, and then I think I've got all my bases covered. I'm asking here, because you're pretty much the FOTK guru. :D The spats... Are they attached to the shins (and, if so, how), or separate pieces that get strapped on after the shins and stay in place just with gravity and friction?

I don't think you need to be as concerned as you think - you're going to be stuffing the liner into a helmet, so the shape and fit will not be nearly as accurate as it would going into an actual motorcycle helmet.

Yeah, I would definitely prefer that if you guys don't mind just so we can keep the thread on track. :)

Was planning to. And thanks for the advice. :)

By my math, each liner would come out to $2.85 (total cost divided by 42), but I'd be happy to pay at least $10 per liner which is still significantly less than Amazon.

I wasn't going to set a price point until I knew how usable the 2XL or the XS and SM were. But even if I just put up the remaining Mediums and Larges with the cost divvied between them, it'd still only come to about $13 each. So that's my estimated cost range, depending on usefulness of other sizes -- $3-$13. Have you checked out Scorpion's EXO helmet size chart? I'm on the cusp of M and L, depending on how things fit. So I'd post that whenever I put them up and have people check their head size against your experience, mine, and the size chart before ordering. Worst case, some of the small ones might fit Mando helmets or the underscaled Rubies/Target FOTK for really petite people or younger folks... There are possibilities. So I'll go ahead and snag it. :)

  10. Hey, Taylor -- since you were the one to find and advocate it, I figure I'll post here first. I just ran across this on the famous auction site. These seem to be the right ones. I'm strongly tempted to spring for it, even if only the Medium, Large, and maybe XL will work for the FOTK bucket. I'm curious to try some of the other sizes in various other helmets I have around. I'd only need one or two, and I'd be happy to make the rest available for less than the Amazon cost of the similar-but-not-quite version. Thoughts? Still need a second one for your TLJ lid?

    --Jonah

  11. They had two TLJ TK helmets on display at ECCC. I'm not interested in that version so I didn't even think to ask (beg, plead, threaten, cajole...) if they might be purchasable from the con... Even if it hadn't worked, I'd've at least made the attempt. :P

Also, there's the ANOVOS premiere TFA TK lid in fiberglass to add to the discussion list. I am not an authority on it, though I know some are. I'm sticking with the standard.

Are we talking about the same area? Very top of the armor, white? Sewn into the inner mesh?

Yeah. I'm trying to parse what I'm seeing. Is that, like, a 1" wide strip of something glued around the top with half sticking up, and the black diagonals are very loose stitching? All in all, I think the top and bottom you have on your torso rig are far tidier and make more sense. I'm trying to grok what they did so I can make the most informed choice possible in my own build.

Oh, I know that boning. I have a roll, myself, and am intending to use it for my build (in addition to the things I originally bought it for). What I'm trying to wrap my head around is what those white bits are, and how they relate to the whole thing.
