  2. Hey future Badlands member!  I just replied to your post on the Badlands forum.

I'm excited to have another so close to me!  There is one other TK in Swift Current and one about an hour south.  While I can't speak to the building part I can speak to the fantastic help you'll get from everyone on this forum!  Many kept me sane the last few months (and I just had to do fitting not building) so be sure to post here and I will look forward to meeting you maybe sooner than later as yours just 2 short hours away!

There's likely room in the back plate for a tiny wallet pouch if you fill up the chest plate with electronics. The OII recess can almost swallow a camelbak hydration flask... almost.

Maybe if I could reach that area on a good day with no arms on!  I can barely snap on both arms by myself right now!  Reach my back?  Nope!  You flexible young guys...   Bart

It's simply a matter of using any space where you don't touch your armor. For example, I have return edges at the top of my thigh armor, so in order for those not to dig into my thighs, I need a bit of distance to the armor. Those few millimetres between the return edge and my thigh, as well as the width of the return edge itself, allow for enough space in between my thigh and my armor to store a phone.

I personally don't use an aker most of the time, which allows for extra space in my armor. Again, using all possible space in the armor. The pouch is fairly slim and wide, so that takes up less space.

The box is a 3D-print! The hook is Coverstrip ABS, which I heatformed and glued to the box. With my newest box the hook will be 3D-printed as well though.

So can you be persuaded to share the files for the box should I want to try that?  I assume you just are hanging off your belt?  I'd have to, I assume, ok this with my garrison if they allow it for trooping.  I'm still learning all the rules.  Bart

Hi Bart, and many congrats on your approval! Here are my thoughts on the points you make:

    2) In your photo the back and kidney appear to be wed pretty well. I suppose it's natural for them to stretch apart then come back together while walking and such. If the elastic is taught between the pieces, then I'd leave it. If the back piece is literally resting (weight-bearing) on the kidney, then cinching it a bit might be good.

    3) Yes, the seams on the thigh pieces should generally be closed up.

    4) Good decision on erring on the high side, at least for approval. Now for comfort and mobility you'll definitely want to either lower them, or shave off the top of the back of the thighs. I say just the back because the fronts appear to be at a good height aesthetically; but the minimal space between them and the cod may also be restricting.

Hope this helps, and congrats again Trooper! :th_AnimatedBravoSmiley:

Hi and congrats to you as well!  Kind of feels special that mine happened around that same time as yours!

    2) Yes to the taunt.  It's an OCD thing.  Always worried how it compares to everyone else.  I looked at so many photos of people's backsides, thighs and crotch spacing in underwear it's embarrassing!  It will make for good stories later on though.

    3)  I was pretty sure on that.  Already had been preparing to tackle that now that basic is not good enough.  Overall that now seems like one of the easier things to address.

    4) I have a harness now instead of a belt for the thighs.  So, if that works well I should have more adjustment room to lower.  I think a half inch down would still leave enough room at the knees and give me the butt space too.  I'd like to not cut anything if possible.  Too stressful to this day making any cuts.

The one thing that I was super happy with was the helmet height.  I got rid off all padding in the top and put in a hard hat suspension system.  Dropped it right into the zone and locks it nice to my inflated head so no bobble head feeling anymore!

I've also got a little pouch in my chestplate:

    XIZ89ri.jpg

Mine closes on two sides, so I can get to it without removing my armor. It does involve me sticking my hand into my Chestplate with a bit of contortion though, unless I open the chest-back connection. It's holding in there with Velcro for easy removal during post-troop clean-up and is spacious enough for money, glucose, a snack, my keys, my phone and trading cards.

    00h8jen.jpeg

I've also got basic clip-on boxes for my trading cards and am in the process of getting one for citation cards. These are non-CRL and not really made for going on a trampoline, but hold well enough during most Conventions, whilst being easier accessible, if I want to hand something out.

No picture here, but a friend of mine has crafted a way to store her phone in her thigh with a carabiner. So, yeah, use any and all spaces you have in your armor :laugh1:

I can't wrap my head around how you guys manage to carry around a dozen things in various spots.  I still have to get the icomm and speaker set up in the chest and then think I'm full.  Is this little box a 3D print?  Bart

Congratulations and welcome to the ranks trooper. I see you've already requested higher access ;)

Some foam on the inner sides towards the top of the forearms should help centralise them and make them look more filled. Remember too that most wont' see your from behind ;)

Things do tend to move around, personally I wouldn't worry about this gap

Thank you.  Okay, I will leave things as is for now and see how it goes.  I have been making padding adjustments every time I wear it and it has improved somewhat in appearance.  Bart

Congratulations, Bart!  Great job. Now we need to find you an event to troop. :duim:  Time to start harassing Giles. Lol.

Thank you and thanks again for all the encouragement and patience because you were the first to really get peppered with the questions!

Got to start small.  I'll be pretty awkward at first just moving around in it!  Might need to do more table duty first and build up stamina.

  9. Well been waiting to tell you all since this morning.  I got word that my basic armor is good for the 501st so I guess it is all official now.  Many thanks to those that guided me through the necessary fitting adjustments along the way and helping me not lose my head in the details.  I'll call you all out as things move forward.

I'll be TK23108 which was just the day I submitted my photos to my GML.   It seemed to roll off the tongue nice too.   I'm not sure if I can change my user name here, but on the 501st I'm going to go as "Bazinga" because it has so many connections to me and those that really know me.  A local TK to me suggested it.

Now I know there are some things about my armor that is not ideal and I'd like to start working on those fixes now that the pressure is off.

    Here we go.

My forearms look horrid from the back and part of that is the way I was standing here.  The fact of the matter is I do have skinny arms, but the forearms actually do fit quite well.  There is just a bit of extra space so it's not like they are large on me.  When my arm is bent it is much better and standing like this isn't going to be a thing most of the time.  If I can improve it though I will.  I already adjusted the padding placement to better centre the circumference and I can stop standing like a sloth.  I find the top of the forearm does pinch a bit into my elbow so considering, once again, lowering the biceps just a bit and shorten the strap between the bicep and forearm just a bit more.  Perhaps also ditch the 2" elastic and just go with 1" directly under the cover strip?  Thoughts?

Second is the on again/off again gap between the back and the kidney plate.  I've already done two strap adjustments to shrink it up.  It's not bad and it, again, moves a bit when I move.  Do I do a third round of tightening or add a third strap in the middle or nothing or ?

Third.  The little gaps at the bottom of the thighs under the cover strip.  Am I understanding correctly that they should be filled and sanded smooth for higher levels or is that just for noticeably large gaps?

Four.  I know the thighs are too high on the back to the butt plate and I'm 99% sure I can just fix this with the strapping position.  I wanted to err on the side of tight over too big of a gap for the photos.

Five.  Shoulders haven't had any fixes to rotate them anywhere yet.

    EwVszPM.jpg

This gap is my latest OCD.  I've repositioned the snap twice and added the tongue and groove system to prevent overlap.  That worked really good.  This may always open up a bit when I move, but should I try to tighten the strap even more or is there another fix that might beat it?

    k0Ok67I.jpg?1

Finally, not sure what you can do to fix this one, but here I am.  Bart

1/14/23 - ABQ Comic Con Day 1 - booth setup

    TK troop 47, 2nd for 2023.

    troop2021-2-1.jpg

I didn't attend last year's comic con, so the 2023 event was my first con in armor. VERY Excite!!!! Here's our little group booth area. I helped do setup on Friday, so it counted as a troop.

    troop2021-2-2.jpg

I, of course, had to get a selfie on the Death Star. In armor. Yes.

    troop2021-2-3.jpg

Why in armor? Because the city had a new Electric Bus program/thing being unveiled that day at 2pm and wanted to do a press conference in conjunction with Comic Con. The bus would drop off some cosplayers in front of the convention center as a joint interest story for the bus and the con.

I was proud of the above selfie and thought it was pretty funny.

    troop2021-2-4.jpg

Then Vader came along and just stomped all over my little selfie. The coffee cup was *chef's kiss*. :laugh1:

    troop2021-2-6.jpg

We troopers got on the bus and waited patiently...

for a long long long time. We hung out for like 45 minutes with no driver in sight.

    troop2021-2-5.jpg

So I took matters into my own hands. Fortunately, I missed all the traffic, pedestrians, and barriers on the way to the drop off a few blocks away. :laugh1:

True story though - the bus driver was no where to be found, so we were all having fun and taking pix along with the event organizers. The main bus PR lady asked if anyone could sit down for a driving pic and I basically launched myself into that seat. :laugh1: There was no way I was missing out on driving the bus in TK armor.

    troop2021-2-7.jpg

The bus dropped us off (TB & TKs followed by Vader, Jango, and TX, followed by some Avenger and the event officials). The officials gave their speech and then the press wanted to talk to the 501st members. Randy took off his bucket and answered questions for about 5 min. I'm to his right. It was a proud moment for us.

Your troops are always so fun to look at and read!  Bart
