  1. TK-13006 requesting Detachment access!!! So good to be approved finally!!! http://www.501st.com/members/displaymemberdetails.php?userID=19058
  2. Hey everyone! I was just reading through the CRL and I think I found a small issue with the descriptions of the Thermal Detonator. For Version A, the CRL indicates in the first bullet that the tube is white, and then later says the tube should be gray. I think the first bullet needs to be edited to say: "...and include gray tube with white end caps...". It also says "The thermal detonator has two thin strips approximately 1/8" away form the end caps", which I believe only applies to Version B and not Version A. Thermal Detonator, Version A For 501st approval: Shall be attached to the kidney armor (not belt) 1 inch above the top of the belt and include white tube with white end caps and flat panel along the center. The thermal detonator has two thin strips approximately 1/8” away from the end caps. The thermal detonator tube is gray. The thermal detonator end caps and control panel are white. * The thermal detonator is attached without visible attachments.
  3. Thanks for this tutorial. I was able to successfully create a return edge on some scrap plastic. Indeed the sock does leave imprints in the plastic as I'm molding it, so I figure a few different types of sand paper and procuring some Novus is in my future to bring the shine back.
  4. After talking to a few of the garrison folks, I'm leaving the forearms for later. Now my plan is to focus on trimming the rest of the kit so I can bring it to a future armor party and do some test fitting with some folks that have done this before. So tonight I just focused on trimming and sanding the thigh pieces. Below is my "trimmed armor" table, which will hopefully quickly gain additional pieces (It was quite nice to feel like I had accomplished something, as it has been a while....)
  5. Ugh, I don't know how to follow directions. Is there anyone that can move this post into the Build Threads area? Please?
  6. Alright, its finally time. I figured I've waited long enough to start a build that its time to motivate myself through starting a build log/diary, getting help and assistance where I can, and generally forcing myself to feel guilty about not working on it because I know my loyal watchers will be waiting desperately for each new post...and so it begins. About 2 years ago I bought an AP armor kit with the intention of becoming a Stormtrooper. However, I was in school and working full time so I knew I wouldn't be able to put any time into it as my weekends were almost wall to wall homework. Last August I graduated with my Bachelors. I managed to procrastinate until January when a friend invited me to a local garrison build party. I took the virgin box, loaded it in the car, and went to the build party. Got a few pointers on where to start and after getting home, with much fear in my heart, I started making my first cuts. Fast forward to 10 months later and I really haven't achieved much. I started with the arms and was having a hell of a time getting things to line up, couldn't even get the first arm to close with outside cover strips. This side looks pretty good to me, although there is definitely some overlap at the end, but from what I've seen thats not abnormal. The other side that isn't fully closed yet. This was where the issues came in, way too much extra, and it doesn't line up right. There was no way to hold it into position and glue it at the same time. No matter what method of clamps, tape, glue, hands, or feet. So I posted here and got some advice, which aside from the suggestions of boiling water baths and feared heat guns, was to try starting with inside cover strips. So a few weeks/months ago, however long ago it was, I started down that path and things seemed to be more possible, but I haven't gotten too far. I'm far more hopeful with this approach though, since even if things don't line up right, its much easier to "force" and glue it into place this way with inner strips than outer strips. So while I was getting frustrated and impatient with the forearms, I decided to switch to the biceps. Again, haven't gotten very far on the trimming. First pictures is the untrimmed, second is the other one that I have started cutting and trimming already. BTW, in case I didn't mention this before, I just finally got the Lexan Scissors with curved blade. After a few test cuts on excess ABS, they seem WAY easier to make precision cuts with than any other methods I was using. Untrimmed The two trimmed pieces being put "together". Still needs work...uhh, lots of work... Inner bicep piece from the end, leaving lots of extra in there right now, but need to trim it back. Doing so with Lexan scissors will likely help do this easier. So anyway. That's as far as I've gotten thus far in 2 years. I hope to speed it up a bit as I have 3 more...yes 3 more...kits on the way arriving anywhere between next week and 3-4 months from now. So I need to get some confidence, progress, and patience going or I'm just gonna bury myself in disappointment heheh I will be attending the San Diego Makers Faire the next 2 days, so I'm thinking of bringing the legs, pencil, ruler, and Lexan scissors and doing a little trimming while I'm sitting there. Any feedback, encouragement, chastising, or other motivational methods welcome and appreciated!
  7. Please approve for 501st Member Access for IC-13006 (TK in process ) http://www.501st.com/members/displaymemberdetails.php?userID=19058 Thanks!!!
  8. Thank you everyone for your posts!! The pictures really help a lot too. Knowing that it's regularly a b*%#^ to get these to lay together helps. C-clamps and inside strips will be my new best friends!!! (Along with all of you of course). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. LOL I have three different size/shaped ones already . I have some thick round ones also and it takes great effort to pull those apart and they weren't working either. Time to get my fourth order in hehehhe Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. I've seen that mentioned a few times. Do the inside cover strips first make construction easier? If so, I'm assuming they would be smaller than the 15mm outside strips? Maybe 12-13mm? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Coastertk - Not understanding your first point. Sounds like something I'd want to do, but not visualizing the suggestion. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Try a picture here of the gap with clamps and magnets and tape. Maybe I need stronger clamps and longer ones. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. Hmm, can probably give the water a try. Darth Aloha - I can't even get the gap to close initially for the two pieces ( cover strip and other piece) for glue to work. Have to push with hands to get enough pressure for cover strip and piece to go flush. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. I can get the alignment by: 1. Applying glue 2. Having wife apply edge clamps and tape while I hold it 3. Apply magnets, additional clamps etc But the glue area still separates leaving a large enough gap that it's ugly and glue won't hold. Also, problem with taking first is then I can't get the glue in. 15. So I've finally started my build. YAY!!! I've trimmed all the pieces for forearms and started trimming one side of the biceps. Since I'm using E6000, I've only been glueing one portion of one of the forearms per night to make sure I don't make any mistakes and to just get my first piece under my belt. Well, thats where problems have begun. I'm at the point where I've put the cover strip on both sides and connected the two pieces on one side for one forearm, but now I can't get the other side to come together. There is too much tension trying to pull the pieces apart. I've tried LOTS of clamps, rare earth magnets, tape, etc to try and keep it together, but there is just too much tension in the plastic pulling the pieces apart. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, this is VERY frustrating. (I've done everything I can not to take a saw to my plastic). --Impatience
  16. Honestly, I think this is the part that scares me the most about trying to build the armor. These little touches that in my mind have the greatest possibility of disaster. I think I'm okay with the ideas of trimming my armor, and even sizing it, but the finishing touches scare the hell out of me.
  17. Please forgive my ignorance, but what is a "Hengstler"
  18. I have not yet purchased my armor, so I don't have any experience in building it, but one thing I saw in the threads is that this is a common problem. The solution that people seem to suggest is the use of rare earth magnets in the areas where the clamps won't reach. Typically placing a row of them on the top and bottom of the area being glued to help hold the two pieces together. There is some discussion about these in this forum article: http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=20066&hl=magnets&fromsearch=1
  19. So THATS how you get to meet George R. R. Martin!
  20. I look forward to that similar scene in my living room. My GF may not agree, but I think it will be awesome. Looking forward to seeing your progress...please make mistakes that I can learn from before I start mine! Good luck and keep us updated.
