AP armor build Jan. 10 2008[*AP]
trooper1 replied to trooper1's topic in Build Threads Requireing Maintenance
Hey, please someone help. I am in a standstill here. I have bounced my head off the wall trying to figure out the best way to put this armor together, I mean on the last end of the build, the straps, and things used to hold it all together. I have tried snaps and they work, except for the elastic in which when it stretches pulls the snaps thru. Any ideas to combat this?? I am having trouble with the back and chest, and the ab plate and back. Having problems finding ideas on putting together. -
Fitting boots under the armor
trooper1 replied to kiyotei's topic in Hard Armor (General Discussion)
Hey I have been reading and the soft cloth deal could be used to keep from scuffing your boots. I had some left over industrial velcro, used the soft material part, and stuck it to the inside of the lower leg. made a difference. Just a small piece on both sides. -

Uhhh, I am not sure what you mean entirely. I did clamp them up and put them on over top boots, and checked the thigh pieces for height. Everything seemed to fit that way. As for the width. I am going to have to use some foam inserts in places to keep from being to loose, unless there is something else I could do. I am a little guy. 5'9" 140. Let me know. -

Ok, I have finished the legs, and arms. One problem encountered... The forearms were both for the left arm, and the upper arm for the right side. I have emailed AP, and been told that this was normal, that the molds only had one side in the originals to go from. Has anyone else had this problem?? with the arms...of any set of armor.. I will have to trim to make look right. Will have to work I suppose. Also anyone let me know if both legs look ok. If there is something I should change let me know. -
Mic tips and speakers
trooper1 replied to trooper1's topic in Boots, Soft Parts, and other Accessories
Pablo, Hey dude, I have ordered a RomFX to, and a set of stompers hovies with speakers. Reading others write ups on this subject everyone seems to say they work well together. I am guessing this is a good combination. -

Thanks Mike, I will first see if I can find this rubber anywhere. Your right it will be to short if I take anymore out. The most part that hits is the front. Makes it hard to look down. Feels like a stiff neck. I supposed that is the way it is?? I am doing the other armor the old way... I cut the strips for the legs, and arms. I am putting this one together the original way. Will take some time... Jay -

Ok, Helmet complete as shown in the previous photos. Please let me know what everyone thinks. I tried to complete the hardest part first, I think. I painted most of the helmet, and used the automotive pinstripe method to outline some of the gray. The lenses are from a Johnson face shield #3 green, fusion flat black inside, Stompers unfinished Hovies just as a sizer till the speaker version is ready to install along with a RomFX kit. I do have a question though. The helmet fits tight, I know, but can the front of the helmet be trimmed out anymore to allow for better head movement forward?? I have attached pic for reference. -

Hey Scott, The helmet I got was a Wilson batting helmet. I am still modifying the liner to complete the fit, but it was completely removable with minus one rivet and a little glue. I havent any further details on it yet, as I am still configuring it. The one you want to get is a youth model. This model will not require as many modifications. I will post some pics when I get completed. Should be tomorrow or Fri. Jay -

I purchased a batting helmet yesterday and I am trying to modify it to fit. It is a challenge though. Cut a little move a little. I will let put up pics as soon as I am complete. -

Ok, here is the helmet almost finished, still have some painting to do and add the hovis I painted the inside with the fusion flat black. used a #3 faceshield and cut out the lenses my self, used 5 min. epoxy to hold them in. Mixed it, set for 3 min. quickly added glue, pushed and held lens for another 3 min. till solid. A trick to clean up epoxy, paint, and anything else on APS or polycarb. I used Birchwood Casey gun scrubber Synthetic safe cleaner, purchased at any Walmart. Will not harm plastic but quickly removes the glue I used, paint, ink, pencil. Let me know what you all think. -

Ahhh, where do I find Humbrol midnight blue??? I did find the gray at Crafts 2000, last bottle they had. -
Mike, I have definately figured that out the hard way. I wish the armor build that TK4261 Curtis did was available as just a tutorial. I have found it very informative but very hard to go through all the stuff just to use it. If curtis is out there, let me know if you have this done where you can lend me your knowledge, in this form in a little shorter version.

Ok, thanks Smitty. I wasnt totally sure and didnt want to make the final drill holes until someone else looked at it. Sideways does work getting in the helmet just hits my ears a little. I got the ears looking pretty good. I will probably finish up on Monday. Waiting on #3 green welding hood to come in so I can cut it up and make eyes. I got paint today, and will paint on Monday to. Thanks -

Mike, Hey I got the first holes drilled and rivets installed. That did help with the ear problem a little. Hey I did notice something that I am not sure about. The helmet fits really tight getting it on my big mellon, little guy big mellon, who thunk it. Well is there something I can do to make it a little bit easier to get on. I dont know if I can trim it, redrill it, or what. Also is there a distance that the forhead should come down to be correctly positioned for a stunt. 1/4" / 3/16 or just guess. I mean I can eyeball it from your pics but was just wondering. Jay -
Hey as for his next run I dont know. He still has complete kits available though. As for spare parts, your right, I never got a complete answer from him so I dont know. As for MEPD, I have been there to, no luck yet, but everyone is great here and there so I think someone will come along. I am praying at least.

Hey Mike, I took your advise and cut the right eye some more. It looks much better. As for the other part, I watched your tutorial. and it helps. I am still having problems. holding the helmet together to line up and drill hole also the helmet still acts like the back part is warped a lot which doesnt let the whole thing come together. I will advise what I come up with. I am headed to Walley World to get paints, and such for the rest of the helmet. Jay -
Spare parts, spare parts, does anyone have any??? haha I did mess up my ab buttons and AP doesnt have anymore until his next run on material. Does anyone have a spare AP set of ab buttons the big set on the plate in the center??? I was hoping maybe someone who was doing a Sandtrooper and didnt need any. I am hoping I can ask this... Sort of like "Luke your my only hope"
-
Well,!!!!! I did the same thing. I should have read this first. I so neatly cut the panel out to insert it, and bang. Read your thread and crap. Ruined my buttons.... Well emailed AP to get another set I hope. Well chalk one up..

Smitty, Hey I know I seen it somewhere on these forums but I cannot seem to find it again. What colors do I need to get to be accurate. Color of gray and blue?? Thanks for the info -
OK, here goes. I have spent weeks reviewing and soaking up info from you guys. I recieved my AP armor yesterday and took right after it. I have rough cut the plastic completely and am starting on sanding and prepp. The helmet was tedious but I think I have it cut. Please guys let me know what you think of the eyes and teeth. I went off of many of your recommendations and checked out the Starwars helmets site and trimmed, sanded, trimmed some more, and sanded. I have ordered a #3 green shade face shield from a local weld shop which I am going to cut and use for eyes. I also looked at a pic on the starwars site, that the green film is on an original showing thru the teeth as TE said in another thread. I am not sure what to do there yet. I did cut them square as many of you said to do. I am a gunsmith so I have many small files, and a dremel is a life save. OK Let me have it. Let me know if the eyes are enough or if I need more. I will update pics as I have them. I did have questions that Mark from AP graciously answered. Excellent dealing with him, he returns questions promptly. I am still cutting and getting ready to go after paint. Should I use the decals on the helmet or paint many of the items??
