FX ABS Belt assembly question

Here's an old school question for you guys. (I did a search but only found canvas belt convos.)

 

I'm waiting for my canvas belt yet I want to join the 501st and start trooping.

 

The 2 ABS pieces that go around the back to make the belt are too long, did you guys just cut those so they overlap? How far should I overlap them? Maybe just far enough so they don't pass the TD?

 

Again, this is just a temporary belt but I don't want to cut too much.
