It keeps your helmet from wobbling around. If you decide to put fans in your helmet you can get better airflow throughout. Ā It's not the only way to go, but i've been trooping with mine and enjoy it. Ā I wouldn't want to glue a bunch of pads in and have them get all stinky and sweaty just to tear them all out and do it all over again. You will get sweaty and more then likely you will want fans.

The "Army helmet pads" are available as Kris said, on Amazon, etc.

You'll want to look for MCH padding system.Ā  They are easy to install (velcro tabs stick in the helmet, the pads stick to the tabs), and easy to remove so you can wash them as needed, and replace them afterwards.

They are what I have in my helmet as well.
