Shadowtroopers, where are they from ?

Whilst I have seen a lot of Shadowtrooper armour about, and have managed to be shot at by a few in Battlefront (there invisibility trick is sneaky).

 

I was just wondering where they were from ?, Did they appear in a book or in a game somewhere ?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they first appeared in the Jedi Knight game series.

You're not wrong, but the JK2 "shadowtroopers" are weird-but-cool dark Jedi / TK hybrids. "Shadow Troopers" are the ones from TFU with dark grey armor and blue accent LEDs.
