  1. That's the same kit I just got. I've been working all day yesterday and today, but it doesn't look like I got much done. I started with the biceps. I figured I could line the bottoms up, and wouldn't worry about the top not lining up as it's under the shoulder bell.

The forearms I lined up at the wrist, but it's way off at the top.

For the front/back seam at the shoulder, I cut my old Army BDU belt and riveted it in so it's strong. I'll cover the rivets with the plastic piece and leave it floating in the back.

I like how all the strapping was pre-cut and velcro sewn on already. I got an SC Biker Scout kit almost done, and sewing all the straps wasn't my favorite part of the build. I don't like that the straps are sewn with the fuzzy side of the velcro, though. All the armor inside will have the rough stuff facing in, not the ideal way to do it, IMHO (with all my weeks of armor building experience. wink.gif ). All the cool kids are using snaps, I'll probably do that later, for now I just want to get er done.

In other news, can someone point me to any FX helmet building threads? I've searched but haven't found anything yet. My full kit came with it, and I'm having issues with the front/back fitting. The ear pieces have huge gaps I'm hoping I can fix with ABS cement at the bottom, but getting the front/back pieces trimmed to line up smooth is proving to be a challenge.

i havent seen a build thread but i am building one for a friend. Unfortunetly i have put mine together without taking photos but i had a nightmare lining things up too. drop me a line if i can help i will.

  2. Ok dokey. Ive read all this thread, and i have an FX kit (cost reasons) that i bought nearly two years ago. I am sloowly building but due to budget, child and business, i dont have a lot of time to spare. This overlap against butt joint thing, as i am doing an anh suit, do i hear this correctly that i should be trimming off the overlaps and then butt jointing and cover strips? (im assuming only the fronts are cover strips as i was planning to velcro the backs of the forearms and calves.

Not a major panic as i only have very minor things done so far. Yes i know that the fx isnt super accurate but it was all i could afford at the time, (and i admit i probably could have done more research)

I could 'whack it' together but its a shame when with a little more effort..............

    what would you guys do?

  3. here we go for the pics, comments please for improvement gratefully recieved, especially where the tube stripes are concerned, im doing the anh look, i prefer the dark blue stripes but the only ones i have are too small. Can i use the dark blue?

oh and i just noticed i havent painted the black onto the ears yet.

and have i put the neckseal on properly?

and i cant upload more pics, i have hit the global upload limit????

  4. I replaced the ears for ones from john danter on mine, looks much better i think although i went a little 'craft knife happy' so the stalks are a little thin. still live and learn. the other things i have done to my mrce are

replaced brow and neck seals (seals direct)

    replaced decals (tk4510....the decal shop)

    replaced lenses (smitty)

filled seam at teeth and back (car body dent repairer)

cut out teeth (although probably not enough vertically and slightly too much horizontally)

resprayed lid (local car body spray shop, 20 quid for black inside white gloss outside)

new teeth mesh (smitty if i remember right)

    yet to do:-

replace hovis (have a set from kieth and a coupla spares from smitty, not sure how yet)

fit rom fx kit with speakers from jd to mount behind hovi's

fit padding inside (got kneepads to cut up)

    wear at halloween

  5. no but he is available to rent....... perhaps some guys should go down and 'rescue' lord vader. The guys who work there do have a sense of humour.

(incidentaly you should see the advert for the strippers.....................thats for wallpaper obviously)

  6. my son is two and deciphering his speech now is bad enough, looks like it wont be improving for a while huh, this reminds me of a calvin and hobbs cartoon where calvin walks past his dad saying a bunch of new slang from school, rather than looking confused his dad just says thas cool daddyo peace out. instant shoe on other foot, im storing up my youth slang ready to use again in about 12 years

  7. Here is a thing. My friend and I are talking about having a go at sculpting some armour. Principally we are talking about using photographs and the films as our main resources. having said that I have an fx suit and an mrce helmet and I can just see it being used as a reference for basic shape. Not deliberately but you know how it is.

What is the general opinion, could this be classed as recast? depending on how it turned out, would it be fairer to say that it is fx derived? even though the intention is obvously to create a brand new set of moulds as a new sculpt.

Also having seen some old posts on other forums deriding troopermasters work as a recast in what way could you evidence your own work. Personally I would be gutted to create a suit only for it to be decided that its got to be ripped of as 'the suit is too hard for anyone to create from scratch'.

I cant see a photographic record as ever being quite good enough.

  8. Hi Garreth,

You are a fifer aswell ?,where abouts in fife are you originally from

Dunfermline, lived in cherry bank for about 7 years till my dad got a job down south. my gran lived in rosyth nr the halt so I came up regularly till she died. went to tchouk school, (i realise thats not spelt right.) drove the engine in the glen, and remember the trikes too. Oh and the baths, (they still open or been sold off?) was gutted taziolies in rosyth village closed, I used to love their tablet and ice cream.

  9. Hi everyone, I am in need of a serious load of opinions here. I am modding an mr ce, part of that mod was buying some new ears from john. They need some serious trimming, but I have a nasty feeling I have gone too far. what does everyone think? I am going for elite first time hopefully, and am having the lid resprayed so I need to get these ears right before painting.

Pic 1 is total head shot with new ear, pic 2 is close up of new ear, pic 3 is cut down mrce ear. I think I have cut the stem down too thin on the new ears. what does everyone think.

    thanks

  10. I am in the process of 'prettying' up my mrce too, and ill let you know what I have learnt so far.

caulking, make sure it is caulk and not silicone, silicone will not take paint in the same way (more on that in a mo). I found that gunning a line of caulk in the frown, once smoothed down, the caulk sunk in. after I had built it up layer by layer to even, I painted some humbrol enamel paint over the top. this looked ok i thought.

Then i removed the ears, and found that as you remove the ears, the lid gets manipulated and flexes. this means that the caulk line tends to recrack, especially if you have used it to fill the cracks on the back too.

I have reinforced the edges where the two parts of the frown meet, (look where the bottom ear screw is behind the trim on the inside of the lid) I just used a big blob of araldite across the join, ill let you knwo if it works.

basically i would say if you are going to do the ear mod, do that before filling anything. I am experimenting with the supplied ears cut down, and a set i bought from john danter on this board. I will say i am not happy with either yet, but that is more down to my modeling skills than anything else. i am finding it a problem with getting them to fit properly after cutting them down, i have tried shaving little bits of the stems but i dont think other people have (maybe someone else can chip in here)

having said all this, I have a tame car spray repair shop who are going to spray my lid after i have it ready, therefore I am using milliput as a filler on everything. I know you dont need to do the ears to be accepted, but as for elite, again maybe someone else can chip in. hope this is a help to you
