Having tracked down the guy responsible for making these, I learned that about 8 were made, so that makes it pretty special, imo. I wanted to ask permission to scan and print a scaled down version of it to go with the SFS and the Vader helmet scans (I also did the Vader scan), but I couldn't agree to the terms, so it's not to be. But the scan is done, so might as well show it off for you guys.
It isn't in the same quality as professional scans, but it's decent enough and would have worked perfectly for scaled replicas.
---------
And this was the dream line-up. May have another option going for a RotJ, and if not... then that's okay too.
---------
This scan, though, won't be used or shared.

Well, if Mark Hamill could fit into one of those armors, then so can your wife. Perhaps AP/ABS-80 armor is the best bet for a nice fit?
-
Here it is next to my old SFS helmet (the one that got lost in the mail! )

I'm sure there are more casts like this out there and it wouldn't be impossible to strip the paint later, but I do plan on painting it.
-
Man, it's tough finding that brand of paint here where I live. Gonna search some more.
Haven't heard anything new about the new decals...
-
Hey, when all is said and done, I'd love to see some pictures of your armor.
-
No, I'm done. No need to move it. It's pretty clear no one checks that section, so is pretty much just sweeping things under the carpet. But good to hear about the anti-recasting stance.
But, as a final - it's not recasting if permission is given - but a recaster cannot give permission, even though he doesn't care - it's still the original maker that was recast you have to ask permission from and not after the fact - and so far I haven't heard any proof that things were settle with CAP, so that whole line is tainted. That's the main difference between copying and recasting: permission.

Ok Carsten so in your opinion what is recast and what isn't?Gino,Te,Te2,Ap,SDS,GF,Cameron O. MOT,PT,DA.
GINO, TE, TE2, GF, AP, Cameron O. are the original legit makers.
If you wanna believe SDS's sales talk, go right ahead... well... I wouldn't ever want to buy from a liar and credit stealer.
Even the good guys get recast, so the cheering when GINO and TE gets recast is just... well... absurd. Doesn't matter if they are nutjobs or angels. It's the principle, not the person that is important here. Because, you can't applaud one and condemn another, but I guess some people think that molding and casting a screen used and then someone recasting that offering is just the same - that they are both recasting. Guess what, you owe the guys who molded and cast that screen used armor, as they provided what you wear, and they risked a hell of a lot more molding and casting that than the guy who just buys one of their offerings and then recasts that.
But I get the general consensus amongst many people here is that as long as you get what you want, you don't care where from or how they came by it, regardless of the effects it has on other niche areas of Star Wars costuming as well as the community as a whole. That's what's so sad about the whole thing and you can thank yourselves for no one making cast from screen used Biker Scouts or Royal Guards or many other cast from original pieces - several projects to make such available were stopped mainly because of the rampant recasting in particularly the stormtrooper collecting/costuming niche of the hobby. But I guess that doesn't matter because you seem to think: It's all recast anyway. Those who have the access and the original pieces definitely know now not to risk molding and casting their stuff for a community who apparently doesn't care about anything but themselves. I sure know I don't.
I guess I'm speaking at deaf ears and rolling eyes people and those satisfied with the same ol' idealized recast crap with no interest in the new anyone might have considered offering. I don't even know why I bother at all, with a forum littered with praise towards the plight of the whole hobby: recasters. JoeR and Sskunky are coming out with a new RotJ amor... guess it's only a matter of time before they get recast too. What a shame. Enjoy your copies of copies of copies.

I would take a crappy armor from original makers over perfect recast armor any day.
-
That's true for about all of the lids out there Carsten. Even Gino's... but hey, it's not like this has been discussed a million times now, so let's just start again
-
Nothing but a copy of someone else's stuff.
-
Actually, it's the shippers country's post office that has to have the insurance claim filed with them, not recipients. But cool you got a replacement.
-
I hope so... the guy wants his package and I want my money... and Danish Post can then just shove that insulting reimbursement up their rear ends and get a taste of how foul it feels to be screwed like that.
-
Well, it's been a few months now... I guess it's safe to say that some postal worker is walking around with a nice fiberglass stormtrooper helmet laughing his an impolite person off.
Looking forward to the day when gps tracking devices are cheap enough to be put into packages, so they can be tracked to where ever the stealing scum takes it. My fight with the postal system isn't over. They still owe me money for losing my package.

Some accurate armor comes assembled, but also costs more. Sadly, yes, the official armors are simply POS. Not worth your money. They have the resources, the access and the ability to make super accurate stuff, but they don't bother - apparently their policy is spend little and profit much. Problem is... the amount they spend could easily get them the accurate offering... so... they are not saving anything, actually spending lots of manufacturing... and they are driving away costumer.
Check out AP/ABS-80 or TM armor.
The cheaper kits are the inaccurate FX or recast armor.
-
Surprising how many recommend recast vendors. Big fail.
-
I would choose AP. It's ABS and the quality is good and you won't need to paint the armor, only the detail pieces.
-
That seems like a fair price for an assembled knock-off.
-
That is an AP recast - the detailing in the filled eye socket gives it away. What you paid for it then is what it is worth now. It's a recast and only scammers sell them for more than they are worth.
The Meatsock was a recast TE made in styrene, he never made ABS helmets.
-
I was recommended another Rustoleum paint as well, so I think I'll check out both.
I think I'll use decals, so I'm waiting to see the final product.
-
Been wondering how to paint this. I take it the RotJ helmets were ABS vac-formed and not painted, right!? So... which brand of paint emulates the accurate ABS plastic look?
Was also wondering whether I should paint the decals, seeing as there are imprints from them on the cast, or I should just use decals from Mike, TK-4510. If I should paint them, which brand and color match the grey in the decals? Seems it's just grey duct tape... but are there different shades of grey on those? I want to try to match the original it was molded from as much as possibly, only discounting the damage and differences that seems to have occurred at a later time, after the molding for my cast.
The detailing should be easy enough... it's the white base-coat that's gonna be the most tricky, imo.
Also... I guess this could be moved to the TE Derived Armor section...
-
Well, it would make sense for him to make his as close to the originals, seeing as he owned an original and therefore had the perfect reference.
Taking the helmet apart later definitely explains the different placement of the ears and partially explained some of the scuffs and tears around the ears, but not so much the tear around the left trap - is that the right word for the decal right above the eyes?
-----------
Well, with all this evidence and plausible scenarios, the likelihood that it is in fact from that TE owned original helmet is definitely high. I just had my suspicions due to the decals and placement of ears and some scuffs that weren't on my cast... but again... all that could have happened later.
-
Okay, apparently picture 2 and 8 was paired with a different original helmet. I apologize for that mix-up. Here are revised versions of those pictures with the right original helmet:
-----------
-
Sorry for the long wait, but here are some pictures. About the best angles I could match. Not perfect, but at least it shows what I'm talking about. It is very clear that if my cast comes from that helmet, then it doesn't look the same now as it did when the mold for my cast was made. The ears are positioned differently and some of the decals are different.

Who can identify this helmet?

Well, it WAS TE who was responsible for these, so my quest stopped there.
