  1. Hey guys Recently took a can of rustoleum to my RS helmet kit, it went pretty well but it was my first time using enamel spray and my set up was quite limited space wise. This meant I couldn't lay down the paint as nicely as I'd have liked, and I have a small portion of orange peel on one part and another part with not enough paint on. If I wait around a week or so, maybe 2, is it safe to respray over the patch I missed with more rustoleum? Will it blend flawlessly? For the orange peel - Can I sand and polish this away? or sand and respray over when I touch up the patch? I want it to match the finish of the rest of the helmet. Cheers guys, can add a few pics later if requested (away from camera now)
  2. Hey guys - sorry if this is in the wrong place, just in a build and thought this was the place to put it! Just working on my ABS RS stormtrooper helmet, and am at the stage where I'm gonna do an undercoat of HDPE colour for some nicks and scratches to show through. Trouble is, I'm in Japan and can't get hold of any decent reference such as RAL7034 (everything here is Japanese automotive standards). I've got pretty close I think, by mixing - but I can't know for sure and the PC screen is no help. Does anybody have any offcuts of HDPE from the HDPE RS runs? I'm after a tiny tiny piece, maybe the half the size of a fingernail, just so I can mix some paint up to match! Cheers guys EDIT: I've edited the post! I reckon an easier solution would be to try and track down some RAL7034 swatches. Is anybody with a can left over able to spray a sample for me? Cheers.
  3. I'm looking to screenprint ESB decals for my own helmet in the near future. I have a degree in fine art, so I damn well hope I can manage Got the vinyl on the way, need to find a fine mesh screen and know the definitive colour shades. I saw on another thread that the decal shade of grey was matched with the AA decal sheet, as pictured on starwarshelmets. Does anybody know the exact paint colour this would be? Going to contact starwarshelmets to see if they can remember. Also curious if the decals were blank grey, cut out and placed ontop of black, I'll be able to tell as soon as I start
  4. I think the time of the year and hype from a new movie pushing orders is responsible for any delay in communication. I got a helmet kit from them a week ago and all was fine.
  5. Thanks guys. I'm gonna do a few trials with what I have available. Good call with the tamiya stuff, I used that years ago with my airbrush and liked it. I will test it out with a clear coat (I think it will need it) and compare with off-brand primer with rustoleum etc.
  6. I've had a look for Krylon online, doesn't seem to have a presence here. Quite frustratingly, all sorts of niche rustoleum products are available... apart from damn primer!. Does rustoleum enamel gloss play nice with other primers or do you think it will just screw it up? I'm gonna have to buy some tuppaware and have a practice paint session Good point about humidity, it is pretty hard to find a non humid day here. Are there any other paint alternatives that produce the right shade and gloss? It is a RAL 9010 shade of white we're after for the helmet isn't it?
  7. Hey guys, About to paint my RS helmet - been looking for the right white paint, found some previous members using the rustoleum stuff to good effect. I can only get the standard (not professional, non silver-canned) rustoleum stuff ----------- Has anybody used this before? Is it suitable to use on ABS without primer? (the primer doesn't seem to be available in Japan) I'm trying to avoid Japanese brand paints, as it will involve a lot of trial and error trying various brands. I also can't read in this country, so have no idea what the cans say. I figured some of you guys would have used this rustoleum stuff. Cheers
  8. What kind of white paint gives the most prop accurate results? Is there any insight to the type of paint used on the originals? (enamel etc? spray?)
  9. Hey, thanks for answering. I want a few scuffs on the helmet, nothing major. If the paint is to be scraped I'd rather an "authentic" colour peeks through! I am not going to be wearing this helmet, it is for display only. I want it to be like one of the props at time of screen use. By the time I've completed it, I may just leave it unscathed. Need to decide later The thread you linked seems to be more geared toward membership criteria, I was wondering if anybody had discussed the colours from the pics we have from various auctions etc. My biggest concern is getting the wrong type of white paint! Not too warm, not too cold.
  10. Hello chaps, Eagerly awaiting my first bit of the empire - an RS helmet kit. I'm opting for the ESB look, but am curious about specific paints that match the prop I've searched the forum and got a ton of information for doing this project. As well as some spectacular reference pictures (I feel like I have that patch helmet in front of me in real life! Thanks DarthKaro, whoever you are) But what paint is best for: The HDPE khaki shade? The actual white of the helmet? The grey parts? (just the ears on ESB I believe?) - Testors 1138? The frown and vocoder? - #85 Humbrol satin black? Any other colour based details you can share would be appreciated! I don't just want to go at it with any old paint, if you know what I mean! Cheers guys
