  1. I will vouch for Francois credibility, mine originally got lost vis USPS and I panicked, he offered to send me another pair at no charge, just pay shipping. At the very last minute someone in my complex fessed up to having them and I cancelled. Not many people do that now adays. Im about 25 troops into mine and they are broken in very nicely. I'll vouch for him as well!
  2. Concerning the switch to PVC, Anovos (in the person of GotMaul) had the following to say over at the RPF:

The ultimate piece will be PVC. The reason you saw the variation was because it was still in deliberation what material we were going to use. My guys were in China this past week and put the materials through various professional tested conditions that looked at wear and tear, long term use and aging. The results we found pointed all at PVC for its durability and wear over the long term.

The part that most people don't understand about PVC is that there is a gradient of quality of this product. Arguably, the gradient between poor PVC plastic and amazing PVC plastic is larger than ABS. What we typically have used here in the states (at least from we have observed) is that everyone is usually held to the limitations of poor supply that doesn't necessarily give the best quality. This would explain the mixed responses ranging from people loving PVC to hating it.

With that being said, thanks to you on the RPF and thousands of people, our great experiment to leverage volume to command our own quality has paid off. I am so pleased to you all that behind the scenes, we are now buying plastic by the TONS. This has allowed to not only be free from the restrictions of supply, but actually custom make our very own plastic and what it will consisted of, down to the molecular level. The PVC we have chosen to make from scratch, will be highest quality PVC. It will also be dyed to match the bright white ABS (which is something that American PVC suppliers rarely see ) and an added element, unique to Anovos, will also have custom anti-UV protection mixed into the plastic. Not only will your armor be durable, it will also be protected much longer from yellowing caused by light and time.

All, I am so excited about this. We've knitted our own fabric before, but actually creating plastic is whole new level for us and it was all because of you and thousands other. Because of you guys, we are not only making more product, but actually expanding our hobby and taking costuming to whole new levels.

I for one think it was a smart move to make the initial price very low but with upfront payment. The ****-loads of $ they must have generated is used to dictate their terms to the suppliers of raw materials with best possible results in mind.

  3. Indeed. It helped me pass the wife test by talking about the potential total $1000-$1500 investment and then whipping this one out.

She said, "You MUST get this." ;)

Oh, if you insist. Mind if I spring for a premium E-11?

    Bill

Pretty much how I did it as well. I guess I'll have more trouble telling her that decent boots will be 80$ than it has been to convince her to get the kit. Thank god I have a complete E-11 already!
  4.

From what I see of this blaster it looks pretty good and would easily pass level 2 standards.

Thanks. I know, I *am* quite proud of it, considering my then limited skills. It's mainly the weathering I'd like to improve, and (which you don't see in the picture ) it has no spring nor cocking lever. That's the area that's somewhat warped.

And the worst thing, it currently has no trigger guard. I didn't have a resin one and the metal one I made was just glued on. So, trigger guard and weathering are my main concerns, though, granted, I can fix those without disassembly.

Maybe I'm just itching for a project to work on during the wait for my armor. :)

  5. While waiting for my first armor kit, I'm thinking about proper armament. I *do* have an E-11 which I built (almost 10) years ago. It looks good... but it could be better. It's made the usual way using a plastic tube and resin parts (with some scratch-building)

I'm wondering if I could rebuild it from the ground up (the current tube had some warping from the heat during the drilling/grinding)

It's held together by superglue, bondo and greenstuff iirc.

Now, what would be a good way to disassemble and STRIP the resin parts without dissolving the resin. The colors were acrylic rattlecan paints as far as I remember. Bear in mind that I live in mainland Europe, so I can't just get a hold of Simple Green or Dettol. What should I use? Break Fluid?

(PS : I also have a Rebel Blaster with the same resin parts. I guess I could cannibalize both guns for the resin parts)

  6. Well, I suspect there are 3 kinds of buyers for this kit:

People who've always wanted a TK and to join the 501st. They're the kind of people (like me) who are informed about the do's and don'ts dor the armor, try to get help, etc.

Then there's 501st members who are getting a new/2nd/3rd armor for themselves (Sandtrooper/HWT/Shadowtrooper etc) or for a family-member. No problems there either.

And then there's people who might not even know about the 501st and its requirements, and who will adhere strictly to the kit-supplied parts and instructions. It's them who might be problematic if they later want to join with a badly-built kit.

  7. Well, this *will* be my first costume and I'll be damned if I just use their instructions without consulting the veterans from this board or local troopers in my area.

Of course I'm shooting for the highest possible standard, so I won't dive right in once I get the big box in (hopefully) winter. Anovos or no, a kit always involves lots of work or so I assume, so I might as well do it right.

Once the boxes are shipping I'll monitor what the veterans have to say about assembly of the kit and adapt my effort accordingly.

If it means buying latex handplates (or other), so be it.

I'd be more concerned for customers who build the kit first and ask questions later.

But since I come from a scale-model-building background, I'm used to online research, aftermarket detailing, forum discussions and build reports.

EDIT: And with the contents of the kit being essentially the same as the 1k+ $ costume, it can't just be low quality crap, because Anovos would be doing itself a huge disservice botching *the* most iconic costume ever. It could cost them their license.

  8. Hello. Just wanted to quickly introduce myself (since I haven't done so yet)

My name's Olivier, I'm 35 (almost) and I live in Luxembourg. I'm married and have a little boy of 5 who's already picked up a keen interest in the Galaxy far, far away. As all of you here, I'm a sucker for Star Wars, but I don't yet have a decent (read: 501-compatible) costume.

What I do have, however, is an E-11 I built myself quite a while ago. I got the plans for it way back on a site called "Blaster Builder's Club" and made it using plastic tubes, bought resin parts and lots of dremel-fu. I also have a Vader ANH saber made from an Heiland flash (corrected to MPP specs) as well as a DH-17 and a Merr-Sonn P5.

So now, after years of only having made the weapons of the Empire I finally made the jump and ordered an Anovos TK kit. With the help of some local 501 members (Manutex from this board for example) I'm confident I can build my white armor up to 501 standards coming winter. If not for TFA, I hope it will be ready for the release of "Rogue One" in 2016.

  9. I've been nothing but impressed with anovos and their customer service as I have gotten complete and quick responses confirming all that has been said here in regards to refunds, assembly instructions, fulfillment date etc. will be placing my order shortly. Bring on winter 2015!

    So will I!
  10. Lets get one thing straight here. NO armour is by default 501st approved. Yes the prototype does look a lot better than other suits often used by members. But that doesn't matter. All that matter is how it looks on you. Not how it looks on a mannequin.

I know that no costume gets default approval. I'm perfectly aware of that. My question was, does it look like it could be made into an accurate (and thus approvable) armor, or does it have any blatant flaws that would make it hard to get approved without MAJOR investment of time, money and work (provided the finished armor looks like this orototype does)
  11. That scope looks impractical. I know it's future tech. But assuming the new helmet has a HUD system, there's no need for a scope. And in that helmet, can you imagine seeing a Trooper (although vision seems to be opened up compared to the original) concentrating and looking through the scope just seems stupid.

It doesn't have to be a scope. It could be a sort of aimpoint hooked-up to the in-helmet HUD, for example.

I'm making this up, of course, but in sci-fi you can find all sorts of explanations for seemingly illogical stuff. :)

  12. Over at the RPF, Got Maul (one of the founders of Anovos) posted the following:

Hey all, my apologies. I will answer questions when the waters have calmed over here at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.

But to quickly answer a question : YES, that armor on the site is our real prototype and not just a concept pics !

So I guess we can assume that the finished armor does indeed look very close to this. What, then, is the verdict concerning validability (is that even a word?)

Does it have the potential to be usable in the 501st ?
