Started a rebuild last week. It's going well and I'm about to update with the tales of the maiden voyage and pics of the finished rebuild:
http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/23732-rt-mod-rebuild/#entry298841
Also I just sent in my application to the 501st tonight!
WooHOO!

Thanks Walt. I'll give it a shot. Any type of blade in particular you'd recommend?
-
I got the sniper plate in shape with a heat gun.
To cool it off I ran it under cold water for a minute. Then I sanded the contact points a little with some 60 grit, washed the dust off, and got the clamps ready. Clamped the hell out of it and walked away.
I noticed that the overlap of the shins pointed outward whereas I've read they should point inward. Luckily the RT Mod shins are identical so I swapped left for right and put the sniper plate on the proper shin piece.
A side note: some of the clamps I use have metal ends so I use a little rubber strip on the outside to protect the ABS. These Pony clamps are hardcore. Typically used for lighting and rigging, these things out clamp any magnet or plastic clamp I've seen. Then I finished the cut on the crotch plate.
I rounded off with the exact-o and some sanding.
On to reapplying the snaps. I cleaned up the salvaged snaps by removing all the old E6000...
...trimming the sides down, and sanding the corners for a nice clean look...
E6000 and clamped. 4AM and time to sleep...
More snap salvaging, repositioning, gluing, and clamping:
Next: new fans in the lid and initial try-on with new adjustments! -
Let cure as long as possible with as many clamps as possible. Put it down and walk away for a few days.

Right on!
Gonna hit it with the heat gun a little to bend to fit and then hit it with the E 6000. Does the ABS cool pretty fast? How long should I wait between heat gun and gluing?
Thanks Eric-not-the-cat!

You guys rock! I will do just that.
-
Glad I said something. I was planning to rivet it tonight. Recommend a hot glue gun or E6000?
-
HA-ha love it. You are making some great progress. Good work mate
Thanks Jeremy. More to come!
I'm worried about riveting the sniper plate in place. I've already trimmed off the return edge as it was digging into my knee. Is there a way to make the rivet backs super low-profile? Do they make rivets with a shallow backing?

the cat is crazy
Eric is usually involved in everything I do whether I want him to be or not.

A few modifications to the RT MOD:
I took a couple of inches off of the crotch plate. I'll be trimming off a whopping inch and a half!Replacing old snaps:
I realigned the sniper plate at an angle away from my knee to lessen the armor bites.
Also I'm trimming out the return edge at the tops of the knees cuz they're diggin' in to my flesh.
Here's a bonus cat pic:

Oh heck yes!! My best friend's girlfriend is the sister of the producer. Been getting lots of behind the scenes info and I am so stoked about this film. It's about time we get something like this and I hope it will encourage more giant robot and Kaiju movies! People predict bad acting and corny dialogue but who cares!? That is not why I go to see these types of movies...

I concur with BOB-O and Kurtzmann. I just bought 2 pair from them last week. Just emailed them and they got right back to me with what they had in back stock!
-
Try TKBoots.com Even though the site says they are out of production for the time being, they still may have some in back stock. I sent them an email recently to find out if they have any backstock / cancelled orders and he said they have a bunch, including a size 14. These boots run a size large (long) so if you're a 15 their 14 may fit you well. Give it a shot! They are a bit narrow. I'm a size 11 and bought both a pair of 10 and 11. The 10 fit me perfect and the 11s fit well with gel inserts and thick socks.

I was really putting on the weight a moth ago right at the time I decided to get some armor. I immediately cut out beer and bread. I've dropped about 8 pounds in the last month from that alone. I'm doing sit-ups and push-ups now. Trooping makes me want to be a better man.

Totally slick, Keith! And Happy Birthday!

Copy that. Thanks!

Hey everyone. I'm new here and wondering how the Gallery feature works.
I'm waiting for a TM kit from Paul. Very excited to get it and can't wait to post pics and get feedback throughout the build. In anticipating posting images I was looking into the Gallery feature, assuming this would be the best place to store pics to post in the build section. I went to the Help section and found the Gallery info page. It says there's a Gallery tab always available at the top among the other tabs but I never see it anywhere. Is this a feature only available to privileged members? Do I even need the Gallery to post pics in the forum?

I just sent tkboots.com an email and they got their last shipment in. Usually a few people back out at the last minute for various reasons.I would send them an email and ask if they have any extras in your size.
Worked for me, I was able to score a pair of size 10s
Thanks Rob!
I did just that and was able to pick up a pair of size 11s this evening. From the sound of it they have a few more pairs in diff sizes available. They responded immediately.
Amazing!!

Hi, i'm new on this forum. Had to ask is this recast armor or worth to buy? http://www.ebay.co
And this is same kit
That first pic is classic in that the hand plates are upside down, and in the other pics they are reversed right-left. That should be some indication right there. I'm new to the armor building but even I can tell that this is something to avoid!

Thanks Ingrid. I actually have learned a lot in just the last few days. Your build doc is great. I read up heavily on your polishing techniques. This has already been an invaluable resource in just the few days I've been on here.

Welcome and best of luck to you on your journey to becoming a stormtrooper! You'll be alright working with ABS. I had no prior costuming experience (other than renaissance) and managed to put a TK together so I'm sure you'll do great. The hardest part is the first cut. Ask lots of questions and post lots of pictures!
Thanks HockeyTrooper. I thought "the waiting was the hardest part". Which is just what I'll be doing. I placed an order with TM. I'm extremely excited about it and hear it's worth the wait!
And speaking of Hockey, delving into all this reminded me of the uniforms from the hockey scene in Strange Brew. I'd love to mock up one of those someday. I've got Cooper Helmet parts laying around from an old Tron build.. heheheh...
Anyway thanks again for all the warm welcomes from you guys. I'll be posting lots of pics!
-
Thank you Glen and Aaron. I'm looking forward to it. Just going thru the forums I can tell you guys are very supportive. I'm gonna need it. I've got my own set of limited costuming skills, archaic they may be. Working with ABS and such is going to be a new undertaking for me. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome
Thank you, Echo!

Welcome aboard Aaron. You have some great resources on this site that will get you into that Shiny White TK! Have an in depth review of the topics here: http://www.whitearmo...ead-this-first/
Also, be sure to reach out to the Golden Gate Garrison folks to attend meet ups, troops and armour parties. They'll be your new family!
Good luck with your research and build!
Thanks so much, Chookaboom! I have delved in deep to the research these last few days. It is a bit overwhelming but I'm super excited and certainly no stranger to a nice learning curve. Thanks for the advice. I will hit the GGG up for sure!

Hey everyone. My name is Aaron. I'm from San Francisco. I've wanted a set of TK armor since May of 1977. I've costumed quite a bit. Made Cylon armor and Transformer costumes, Tron suits, etc. I've waited far too long for this and I am here to troop! Once I get it together I hope to join the 501st Golden Gate Garrison. I'll be using this site to gain an intimate understanding of building my own armor.
Thanks for being here.

Hey there James. E6000 is a plastic bonding glue popular among armor builders. I've just started using it and it's pretty great. There's tons of info about using it right here on the FISD if you do a forum search for "E6000". You can get it at any well stocked hardware store or hobby shop and they also sell it on Trooperbay.
Good luck on your upcoming build!
