  1. Anyone know where to find some very good power cells for the e11.   I have everything else. I cant get in touch with playful wolf.........

Hi Chris,  Sorry, I've been AWOL for quite a while.

My FISD Inbox is full so but you can email me at PlayfulWolfCub@gmail.com

If you've already messaged me in the last few months you can expect a reply this week.

    Cheers, Andy

  2. I was super happy with my resin set from you.

I think everyone loved the resin Power Cylinders I actually sent out.  The problem was that I throw lots away because they weren't good enough.

Plus I had to do more work on the ones I assembled for people than the price justified.

I need the "budget kit" to be consistent quality and not require me to do much work on it - otherwise it stops being "budget".

I use magnets to secure my power cylinders but had to add a thin metal sheet underneath the resin. Having the base already metal would be super!

I hadn't thought of people using resin Cylinders on metal builds but that would be a cool benefit  :)

  3. They are worthy. We are NOT worthy...

Any chance of the resin ones making a comeback Andy, for us less cashed up folk?

    lol   :smiley-sw013:

I just posted this update in the resin sales thread:

I'm actually not sure I'll offer fully resin Power Cylinders again - I found it very hard to keep the quality of detail as high as I want & they were very fragile.

However, I'm now considering a hybrid kit: using a metal base-plate (like I use for my full metal Cylinders) with resin/plastic/metal add-ons

The advantages of a hybrid would be that it'd be:

      1) Stronger

      2) More authentic

      3) The quality would be more reliable

      4) I'd be able able to offer all 5 shapes

I'm quite excited about the idea!  :)

    Cheers, Andy

  4. Anyone know where to buy the power cells? i have 20 old sterling smg and need to locate a worthy source. ill fabricate them if i can find plans......

It's impossible to buy original power cells but I make extremely accurate replicas.  I believe most FISD members would say they're "worthy"   :)

I haven't made many since last Summer but I'm starting up again now.  There are lots of photos of finished replicas & links to my research project in this thread

  5. A million apologies guys – it’s been so long since I was on FISD that Paul Troopermaster drove to my house last night to make sure I was ok!

Thanks very much for making that effort Paul, and thanks to all the guys who’ve emailed/PMed well-wishing messages.  I feel I should explain a bit about why I’ve been so hard to get hold of.

I have a long-term health condition which has been worse this year and has been really bad the last few months.  It isn’t life-threatening but it impacts heavily on my life and what I’m able to do.  I usually manage it quite well but this year’s been much tougher and eventually I became totally exhausted.  I had to just stop everything, not just FISD :(

I feel really bad how long some people are waiting for things they asked me to make (and in some cases I’ve not even managed to reply to messages  ).  All I can do is apologise and assure you that it’s not intentional & I’ll remedy it as soon as I can.

I promise I haven’t forgotten about any of you.  I do still hope to make all the blaster parts that are on the waiting lists and start making the E11 stands (although that’s clearly going to be a 2016 project now…)  In fact, I’ve got 2 sets of Power Cylinders that got nearly finished and I’m going to try to finish them before Christmas…

If you’ve contacted me about anything and I didn’t reply, please accept my apologies and try again.  (I have 6 email accounts with a billion unanswered emails – I’ll try to work through them but a fresh email is more likely to get noticed & replied to.)

    Cheers, Andy

  6. I'm going to stick my neck out & suggest that someone's trying to make a LOT of money with a replica.

It's a good effort but there's something about it that doesn't feel right to me.

However, I haven't seen every Tunisian/Bapty ever made so I'm happy to change my mind if the the owner is genuine & would like to come on FISD to tell us the history & provenance of the blaster

      :smiley-sw013:    :smiley-sw013:

  7. Really enjoying watching you put the Cylinders together Christian  :)

I think your Sterling looks great as it is - some really interesting textures.

Maybe leave it unpainted until you have everything assembled, take some good photos of it & then decide if you want to paint it?

  8. I haven't tested this but T-Cut or similar polishing compound might shine the grip up.

There's no screenshot of a screw holding the rail in & we don't know exactly how they did it.  There's a good shot of a rivet on a Tunisian version.

I use a 6BA cheesehead screw in a way that doesn't harm the rear sight.  It looks very period & matches the 10BAs I use on the Power Cylinders & the 2BAs I use on the scope.

  9. I'm looking forward to watching your build, Christian  :)

You mention the scope range finder being the wrong way round.  You've got it a good way round now for your E11 but I thought you'd like to know that it wasn't incorrect before.

The scope was mounted inside the Sherman tank periscope so it would be seen through a mirror.  That would reverse the image, making an inverted range finder appear the right way round...

    The full M4A1 periscope:

    1_zpsbatvhx1z.jpg

With one end mirror section removed to show the scope mounted on the side:

    2_zpsuk2c46rv.jpg

The scope in this particular periscope is a M77D.  It's the same shape as an M38A2 with the same illuminated optics:

  10. Hi. I'm an electrical engineer of a certain age. I was sent a request by someone in this field of interest to offer ideas on how to identify this equipment.

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge with us, David.  I've been looking at these things for a long time but you gave new info, particularly why the 3 capacitors are needed!  :)

Thanks, Pat, for inviting David.  You're definitely adding to the quest!

    Cheers, Andy

  11. Hey Pat,

I'm loving those links you've given us - some really great photos!

I don't think the Whirlwind is what we're looking for but don't stop looking... someone's got to find the thing eventually!

It was suggested by one fo the original propmakers that the rack parts were bought in a nearby surplus electronics/junk store in the UK.  I think it's unlikely that American surplus would have been in there so my focus has always been on British (or at least European) equipment.  That's not to say my focus is correct though so you follow your own instincts...

    Cheers, Andy

  12. In case I missed it does anyone have any ideas what Part A does? battery? gm tube? old capacitor? I feel like it might be easier if we knew that. Also what part d is? Light mount of some kind?

To help anyone following Pat's quest, I think this is the labelled photo he's looking at when asking that question:

    LetteredCylinderparts.jpg

These are the suggestions people have so far put forward for the different parts.  (They might not be correct.)

A - large "bolt on" capacitor in a zinc-plated casing

B - TCC "METALMITE" capacitor, "Paper in Oil" type, K-rated

C - socket for 7 pin radio vacuum tube (aka radio tube) / valve / audio tube

D - small capacitor shielded in tube (probbaly to protect them from emissions from part C)

E - Male coaxial cable socket / shielded audio plug

    F - Resistors in series.

I'm excited that someone is having another go at this, thanks Pat!!  I don't think that computer is the rack donor but I haven't been able to open the pdf link yet.

    Cheers, Andy

  13. Hi Pat,

    Welcome to the ongoing quest!

My feeling (based on research done by Marv, Andy19422 & myself) is that the parts came from British military RADAR equipment from the 1950s.  However, no-one has yet found an original rack and until we do I'd say the floor is wide open to new ideas & searchers.

Lonepigeon considered NIXIEs in this RPF thread but I guess it didn't lead him anywhere since (to my knowledge) we never heard about it again.

Did you find my downloadable Research summary pdf   It has very little info about their origin but lots of analysis & photos of the Cylinders themselves.

Good luck & keep us posted with any developments...  :)

    Cheers, Andy

  14. I believe they have two.  A maker bot (I forget the model) and some sort of "build your own" that came in a kit.  The best part is the only time I have to spend there was the orientation.  I can send him the STL file and he prints it out and tells me when it's ready.  It of course will have that "pixilated" look to it but I bought some stuff called "XTC 3D" made by smooth on that is a brush on, self leveling epoxy that is designed to smooth out all of the ridges.  I'm told that resin printers exist that can give you a smooth print.

I have the receiver plate for my T-21 ordered so I will get to play with the stuff soon enough.  I've also finished the file for a pineapple gaffi head I'm going to print out for my Tusken.  I haven't even gotten my first print yet and I'm addicted. :D

Here is the receiver plate and gaffi:

    lewisplatefinal.jpg

    comparison-2.jpg

The only problem is that they print in some sort of organic plastic which has no heat tolerance (like no more than 140 F). He said that printing in ABS was too smelly for inside the library.  Hopefully the XTC 3D stuff will protect it.  For the receiver plate and gaffi though I'm going to attempt to cast them in resin.

I'm going to go ahead and send off the order for the cylinders and will post pics when I get them in.

Thanks for the good words Aaron!

    Hi Brian,

How much fun have you been having?!?  :smiley-sw013:

That all looks very cool & I've subscribed to your FISD & MEPD threads to follow your progress.  I'm really looking forward to seeing photos of everything you've modelled here.

I considered 3D printing Power Cylinders but the rough surface texture has put me off so far.  I'll be really interested to see how your surfaces look when treated with the smoothing chemical.

    Cheers, Andy

  15. Been months since you've asked this, but.....and it's been done before but is not around now.....

A MKV1 flare gun ( Boba's)replica ( in metal) that opens like the real gun. Some resin models are available, but a bronze version would be sweet.

Thanks for suggesting an idea, Sean.

That would be very cool but I don't think I'm the man for that project - For accuracy I'd have to buy a genuine MKV1 to mould & I'd need a forge for casting in bronze.  It'd cost me a fortune!  lol

I bet someone on the RPF could be talked into doing a run of them though....

    Cheers, Andy

  16. Short of sneaking into the Archives and prying the real thing off...

Now that I've sold nearly 50 metal sets I can reveal that I actually found an original rack a year and a half ago.  I'll be putting it up for auction on Ebay at the weekend!!!

    Just kidding...

...I'll never ever sell it!!! :smiley-sw013:

Thanks Lucas (& Aaron for seconding).  I'm glad you enjoyed the read & yes, I'm quite pleased with it as a project  :)

Next on my project list are commissions for a Logan's Run "Deep Sleep" blaster, Back To The Future Plutonium canisters & aluminium E11 stands.

Any other requests?  Is there a prop (preferably Star Wars but open to other ideas) that hasn't been done very accurately yet & would be in demand?

    Cheers, Andy
