I'll second that - goo gone has worked wonders for me on my helmet. Smells nicer than lighter fluid, too.

Well that is one sure fire way to identify your armor from the rest of the pile in the changeroom! Rob - I know you said that you are not going to troop with this helmet, but I have screens (made out of flyswatters, of all things) behind my Vader lenses and they really help to disguise my eyes if someone takes a flash photo of me.
