When it comes to electronics, I would say save your money and get the good stuff, or don't buy it at all.

I had my share of cheap amps and microphones and they either were too soft, too bulky, or just had too much feedback.

After 4 years of trooping, my favorite combo is a good throat mic, with either a rom f/x or hyperdyne static board, and new amp known as "Aker" that a fellow 501st has imported from China.

A good throat mic goes for around $100, and more. You can find cheaper ones, but again, you get what you pay for. The reasons why I chose a throat mic is that it is easily hidden under my neckseal, gives little-to-no feedback in comparison with traditional mics, and there are no wires going into my helmet (my helmet is too small for electronics anyways)

For the static board, you can not go wrong with a Rom F/X or hyperdyne unit. Another possible contender might be the "Voice core" though I have no personal experience with that. Some people also like the "TCI". These go for roughly $150 dollars I believe.

Lastly the amp.

AKER MR1506

This amp is soo good, I actually have to turn the volume down. It has less feedback than other amps I've used (though it will give you some if you crank it all the way, which you don't need to). It is smaller than other amps. It has an internal rechargeable battery that lasts 8-12 HOURS. No more paying for costly batteries!

To top it off, it has an additional input jack. This means you can have an mp3 or any audio player play the imperial march or audio clips of troopers, etc... while your still talking with your microphone!

This beauty, is around $50

(You can also get these direct from a 501st member for a bit cheaper, contact Jim: FamilyJim72(at)yahoo.com)

Manny,

Great review! I couldn't have put it better myself. Only I do also have the voice core and it ain't bad, but Rom F/X and Hyperdyne are the best. For me the Rom F/X is the easiest to install and set up and run.....

Click all the underlined links above and you'll find everything discussed there.

Cheap, effective, and can be made to be completely contained within your helmet. I buy them by the handful.

Hey Ben,

Checkout my gear:-----------

I produce constant runs of specialised active amps and other trooping electronics gear. I'm across the big pond in the UK but I've supplied loads of kits to troopers around the world.

Cheers,

Rees.
