Dark_Trooper Posted June 7, 2014 Report Posted June 7, 2014 So I need some help with these ears, I did them wrong. I'm not sure what make the helmet is, but it is HDPE. I have full pictures and more details on my original post concerning this on another site, The Dented Helmet. This is the web address for it: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f45/need-help-stormtrooper-helmet-ears-50139/#post633027 I'm pretty sure I've done the helmet alright up to the ears. As you can see from the attached picture, I have over-trimmed. Being that this is my first bucket it's been kinda crazy trying to figure everything out, and fitting it all together has been a pain. A user on the other site gave me a good link to this site that pretty well explained how the ears should be done, however I've already kind of screwed them up, as you can see. At this point I haven't decided if I'm going to try using air-drying clay to fill in my current set of HDPE ears, or try to buy another set of HDPE ears. I'd like to buy some but so far my luck hasn't been too good with finding anywhere to get them. The air-drying clay is my next option, and while I've heard of bondo, I'm not sure if I've ever heard of someone using like model putty or clay or something like that for a stormtrooper helmet. I think it might work, but I'd much rather just buy another set of ears. I'm also curious as to what helmet make this might be. I got this kit off ebay (I know- usually a bad thing), but it seems pretty solid. Any ideas? Quote
SCTrooper[TK] Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 Looks like a Dan Laws helmet. If it is, I would ask him for ABS ears. Quote
Dark_Trooper Posted June 8, 2014 Author Report Posted June 8, 2014 Wow you're right on! Yea I just looked at my past purchases on ebay and it was from Danlaws29. I'll have to ask him for replacements, thanks Quote
Dark CMF[Staff] Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 One other thing that I might be noticing - hard to tell for sure in some of the pictures - in the last one at least, it looks as if you only have three teeth cut out on the right side of the helmet. As that helmet is not molded to be a Hero, it should have four teeth cut out on each side of the frown. Good luck with the ears... They are quite a pain in the butt to get that curve cut out properly - but you know that already. Quote
bpoodoo Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 I recently built this helmet and yes the ears are tricky. You might want to request a couple of pairs (one for practice and one for the helmet). These ears are molded from the DavidM or Set for Stun helmet. But the tubes on this helmet are not as wide as the Set for Stun helmet. For this reason the ears may need to be wider than what you'd expect. If you cut along the mold line of the ear you may overtrim. The contour of the helmet where you will attach the ears essentially defines how the ear needs to be trimmed. Based on my experience with ear trimming I wrote this How To you might want to check out: http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?/topic/27375-HOWTO%3A-Draw-an-approximate-ear-trim-line-with-no-gaps Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Dark_Trooper Posted June 8, 2014 Author Report Posted June 8, 2014 I didn't know that Dark CMF! I'll cut two more then. And thanks bpoodoo the pencil-toothpick technique is something I'll have to try when I get replacement ears. I appreciate the tips everybody! Quote
