If you leave a small gap(small, not 1 cm:laugh1:), it is not bad. This will help keep your lenses from fogging up inside your helmet. I don't know if a heat gun is a good idea, can distort the view...

    Regards.

That makes sense. I still cant get the lense to actually stay there in shape. Was I supposed to cut the lenses out of the strip, or does the whole strip go in there? I feel like I've seen both, and putting the strip in there seems to work better to fit them to the curve.

  2. Ended up being able to salvage the ear that i sunk the screw though, patched the hole with some abs paste, then redrilled the screwhole.

Fitting the S-Trim now, noticed that the rim doesnt properly go all the way around, its behind this ear, so there is either gonna be a gap between the trim and the helmet, or that ear is gonna have to be where i start and end the trim. Any thoughts on which i should go with? Im leaning towards the second pic, starting and ending the trim there.

Also still looking for help on the lenses, would really appreciate that so i can be done with the helmet haha

    Thanks!

  3. Any tips on installing the lenses? I cut the lense out from the strip of material I have, and cant seem to get the lense to sit flush with the eye holes. I'm using Sugru to mount them. I looked at the sugru tutorial thread, and it makes it seem way simpler than it is going for me. I can get the lense flush with the eye holes if I apply enough pressure, but the sugru doesnt seem to be enough to hold them in that shape. Do I need to get a heat gun to shape them?

Wish I could give advice on shortening those screws, but I haven’t gotten that far myself yet. Perhaps you could find shorter screws at your local hardware store? Depending on whether or not your screws are actually too long to safely coexist with your head in your helmet, you might be able to simply put some sort of screw guard or glue on the ends to smooth them up. However, if they actually poke you, you’d definitely need a better solution.

Yeah, they stick out towards the head by over an inch haha, it's really scary putting the helmet on and having these screws centimeters from your eyes as you twist the helmet

  5. Alright, so dremeling the screws to cut them down turned out to be a bad idea. The screw got really hot, and ended up melting a bit of the plastic on the ear at the screw hole, sinking the screw into the ear, making the hole too big. Luckily, I have an extra ear for that side since I had to reorder to when I messed up cutting the other ear, so not too much damage done. So, now, I definitely wanna cut the screws down before installing them in the ear, how should I go about cutting them?

  6. Just about done with the exterior of my helmet! Really happy with how it turned out, this is my first time painting anything other than a wall haha

As Im moving on to coating the inside with the cheesecloth and plastidip, i realized i still need  to cut down the screws that are holding the ears on. My tin snips wont cut through them, and dremeling them down is taking forever. Any tips on cutting those down?

No worries! Normally I'd appreciate the plug haha

Not quite as nice and complete as mine imo (sorry!), but Sarah sells sort of a similar kit if that helps!

Awesome, thank you. I'd love to be able to wait for yours, but I'm trying to get this done before this summer. I appreciate the help, I'll definitely look for you again if I ever make another set!

  8. Ive decided to just accept the wonky ear for what it is and move on. i know helmets can be weird, so this is just gonna be how mine looks haha. started paiting this weekend, pretty tedious, but happy with how its coming along.

let me know if theres anything not right with what ive done so far!

  9. Alright, took some new photos, lets try out this direct image link thing haha

    front view

Heres the left one, the one that looks weird IMO. if i were to move it forward at all to match the right, it would expose a gap in the helmet where the back ends

    vG2WBt6.jpg

this is the right ear. like on the left, if i were to move it back to match the left, theres a gap where the front ends

bottom view, shows pretty clearly how they dont line up

  10. Ive been through those threads a million times, I just can't figure out what's going on. The ears are trimmed fine, the problem is that they can't sit right so that they'd be directly lined up across from each other. Moving the left ear forward to match the right would then expose the edge of the back of the helmet

  11. So, the issue I'm having, is the ears. I know these tend to cause people a lot of troubles, so I'm hoping itll be pretty simple to get some help. I finally got both ears to fit on, after 3 replacement right ears haha. But I realized that they aren't even. They're both pretty much lined up as they should be, but the left is way further back than the right. If I move the right one back to match the left, theres a visible seam. And if I move the left forward to match the right, again, visible seam. Neither of them can move in order to match the other. I'm really lost as to what to do at this point.

I know for a fact that I've used the proper ears on the proper sides, that tends to be people's answer to my problem, even tho it isnt the correct answer lol. Imgur album below

  12. Hey! I'm Danny, I'm from Lake County, Illinois, currently working on my first TK build! I've been working on this on and off for the past year or so, finally have enough free time (obviously) to seriously sit down and get this done. The kit is from MTK, I bought it like 5 years ago when I was a teenager dreaming of one day enlisting in the 501st, it cost pretty much everything I had in my bank account at the time, then I realized i had no idea what i was getting myself into, and it sat in the box for 4 years. Like I said, I'm already a bit of the way through this, only finally starting this thread because I need some help with my helmet.
