That is actually not padding, but is 1 inch flexible black ribbed tubing. (available at Lowe's) and adds a cleaner look while also covering wires and such.  I normally use Plasti-dip in my helmets, but you can also use craft foam like I did on my Hero bucket.  (I added a few extras, though, modeled after a "real" helmet).  I really have to get a life, lol.

Those canon influenced internals are awesome, man. Are those 3D printed parts?

  2. That is a lot of damage. Luckily nothing that takes you completely out of the game.
I do agree, however, it shouldn't be in this condition after one troop. That said, I have seen similar issues with the flexible fiberglass FOTK kits, too. Hopefully, once these spots are repaired and reinforced they will no longer crack. I am curious what the vacuumed formed kit looks like vs fiberglass. I would imagine less detail if it is ABS, but it may be worth it for the sake of durability.
    Good luck man.

I am also thinking on using Plastidip in my helmet.  Same question on using a primer.  Did you use primer prior to your 5 coats?

It's been a while since I posted this thread and I never properly followed up.

From my experience, you don't need a primer. I just lightly scuffed up the interior of my bucket with 400 grit sandpaper and then wiped everything out with alcohol. At that point, I made sure to tape off the eyes, edges of the bottom of the helmet and the mouth grill really well with painters tape. I applied a full can of Plastidip, which may be overkill, but it looks and feels great. I applied the first set of coats, about three or so, with about 2 hours between each and then waited about 2 days to let dry before applying the other coats. Apply the very first coat lightly to get a good surface for the other coats to stick. I think total, I applied about 6 or 7 coats.

It's going to stink for the first week after application, and DEFINITELY do not put it on your head in that time. The fumes are toxic. I think mine fully dried and no longer smelled after about a week.

I troop in my helmet often and it definitely helps to black out your helmet, add a bit of heft and dampen sound to a degree.

  4. Honestly man, it still looks great. In my opinion, someone would really have to get close and be purposefully inspecting for imperfections for this to be noticed. With that said, I know what it feels like to have in the back of mind that it's not up to my own standards, lol.

Keep up the great work and equally great thread!

  5. So, at this point, the only issue holding this costume back from being an official CRL is the boot armor not having visual representation? I would love to tackle a Cardinal armor at some point but that would suck that it can't be worn at LFL events, etc.

Hal, your Cardinal in the last few pics is INCREDIBLE, by the way. Excellent job! Have you followed up on the creation of the CRL lately?

Devolver, thank you. As best as I can figure based on posts here in FISD and on MEPD, there 5 completed RO kits. All were TKs but at least one (Yoshix) is now a TD. Also there are a number of people who have built the RO sandtrooper pack and/ or Jedah crystal patrol pack but do not have RO armor. There appears to be 8 works in process including my build. All the builds are using Jimmiroquai armor except one (Sascha9481G) who is modifying an OT armor set. About ½ of the people working on RO kits are modifying the black series helmet and the others went with a Jimmiroquai helmet.

If any of this information is incorrect, please let me know and I will edit it.

Very cool. Thanks for the info.

You are definitely going to stand out in the crowd!

  7. I don't know how helpful this actually is, but a lot of strapping and comfort fixes aren't going to happen until you're fully built and trooping. Before my first troop, I was nearly positive everything was perfect. Afterward, a lot of things became apparent to me that needed adjustment. Spots in the armor that needed reinforcement, straps that needed adjustment, areas that needed further trimming to reduce pinching and increase mobility, the setup of my helmet electronics and padding for comfort, visibility and reliability. The first time is definitely a learning experience!

I've not been trooping for long now, but I'm sure a lot of other Troopers will tell you it's a constant state of adjustment and repairs.

Keep asking questions and researching! You'll probably be doing that for the rest of the time you are trooping. I know I am constantly learning about my armor and how to troop.

Does anybody know the differences in color between ATA and RS? I am thinking about getting an ATA kit and later getting an RS helmet. Also, does anybody have personal experience with ATA and what body types it can fit?

I'm not sure about your question regarding fit, but I can give some insight into the color matching.

I use MTK armor with an RS helmet and it looks fine, but there is a bit more to it. My helmet is actually primed with a rust colored primer and painted with a bright white which has been slightly weathered. The screen used helmets were not ABS, but a material called HDPE. Normally, HDPE is somewhat of a khaki color, so in turn, the screen helmets had to be primed and painted. If you look at many of the ANH screen captures, you will see that the helmet and armor do not match EXACTLY. What is important is that is a reasonable match. You wouldn't want to have a bright white helmet and an off white set of armor. I don't think it's out of question for you to paint your helmet to match if the ABS is drastically different from each other. It's more work, but it's acceptable and no one will notice if you HAD to.

And, honestly, I second SgtGarand regarding screen accuracy vs practicality. Keep in mind that these screen used suits were put together in a hurry without longevity in mind. They weren't comfortable, and didn't have to be. They just had to make it through the day's shoot and many were held together with tape, no joke. At the end of the day, you may want to do what feels comfortable to wear for hours a day and what will hold up troop after troop. No one will see your inner workings, and alternative strapping methods are acceptable. There's a line to cross between display screen replica and "I'm actually wearing this suit while being grabbed by kids and knocked into by adults while trying to walk comfortably and not burn up in the hot sun" :P.

Congrats trooper!  Just a few quick fixes and you'll get the Centurion badge in no time.

I actually had the same problem with my butt plate wanting to overlap the kidney plate. Having tight elastic made it worse actually. So I went to a local hardware store and bought two brackets that I glued to the inside of the butt plate to keep it from being able to move and overlap.

Thanks man! I've been working on some of the revisions as I get time. One thing I have discovered is that the main factor making my butt plate pop out was that in these pics, I made my belt way too tight. It was squeezing my kidney plate in too much. Just by loosing the belt, I have nearly fixed the overlap situation. I will definitely look into the bracket idea, though.

  10. I only use the forum from a desktop, so I don't know if this works on mobile:

    1. Click your picture at the top right of the screen.

    2. On the left side of the new page (your profile page), you will see your screen name and a box with a small picture icon in the bottom left. Click this.

    3. Upload your avatar. It can only be 0.25MB and square, so you most likely have to use a image resizer and do some cropping.

    Hope this helps!
