  1. Re: trooper Finn (FN-2187) ...

If you want to be a Legion member *and* costume specifically as FN-2187, I suggest you first get approved as a standard FO grunt, then do the detailing that is specific to that character. I would also recommend having a separate helmet and ensuring your dirt is non-permanent.

Yeah, the idea was to do a much lighter version of stormtrooper-style weathering using fuller's earth/water/hairspray, etc. I'm only going to use water solulable elements, so I can return the armor to pristine quickly if necessary.

Is there a particular reason why getting approval as a standard FOTK would be the preferable route~? Just out of curiosity.

  2. Certain clones had particular paint schemes to reflect their individual nature. (Well, that's a whole existential topic right there.) So it appears possible to have an indentified character if there are specific, unique visual identifiers.

Anyways, to bring this back to the CRL, which seems to be on the basic level so far, it seems that individual TKs (ie; Finn TK) would need to have a separate set of "hallmarks" to be able to define and differentiate from other costumes. We haven't seen the movie yet, so who knows how many bloody handprint outfits there could be to differentiate the "Finn TK" from a just-got-blown-up-real-good TK. I suppose a better anology than clones would be imperial officers that have slight variations to designate who they are. There's the basic imperial officer CRL, and there's particular identifiers for some speciifc officers. I understand that some garrisons/members like to be able to specifically identify who they are portraying, so this ability might be useful for those who like to portray a specific TK. I suppose then it's possible, once the movie comes out, to weather your outfit to be the TFA TK that was second to the left in the scene when ___ blew up, or the TK on the extreme right of the____ lens-flare at 20.49min of the movie. However, I would caution against codifying these unique characteristics to the point where our GML's are bogged down trying to verify millimeter paint schemes just to be the second TK to the right and so on. Hopefully there's a happy medium for folks that want to be a specific TK (like a black/grey/red paldron wearing TK) without creating a landslide of minutia. I agree with the general thought that characters in armour will remain 501st/"darkside," even if the character in the armour is "light side" in nature per the movie plot.

Happily, our basic CRL allows for entry level, and folks can choose to get more specific as time wears on. I know I've put further enhancements and accuracy upgrades on hold till the movie comes out. I'd like to see how some specific items mentioned during various accuracy discussions appear on film/ the big screen. The previews seem to show there'll be plenty o'weathering potential for folks that like the battle damaged look. I'm looking forward to seeing all the environments that the the TKs are placed... heck I'm looking forward to just seeing an army of troopers on the big screen again!

Thanks again for all the work on the basic CRL! Go team FISD! -Krista :atat:

Sorry for the necro, but I'm still curious about Trooper Finn approval. Would it be possible to get his "Jakku raid" appearance approved, with the bloody helmet, etc? Is that distinctive enough marking? How would one go about inquiring about such a thing? I don't want to bother dirtying up my Armor for no reason :)

FWIW, the Rebel Legion has already decided NOT to allow any of the Trooper variants of heroes, including Finn, as they consider them disguises and not representative of the actual characters. So the 501st is the last place I think Trooper Finn could fit, otherwise it just becomes a costume stuck in limbo, which I feel would be unfortunate given how iconic that bloody handprint has become.

  3. Does anyone know the name for the style of suspender rig being worn by Mark in the Omaze Force For Change video? I could swear I have seen other troopers use a similar set-up and really want to try this to keep my armored pants up!

    Video is here:

    Thanks guys :)

  4. The plastic ANOVOS FO trooper helmet is supposed to be identical to the fiberglass one save for the different material, so I don't see why it wouldn't be approvable.

As for the second question, nearly everyone with the ANOVOS FO armor is already 501st, as we were the only ones who were allowed to purchase what ANOVOS is calling the "Marketing Kit". Having said that, I know for a fact that there are a few non-501st members who - usually via a secondhand deal - have acquired the costumes. Don't know of any who have been approved for 501st with them, though.

There are some differences-- the color is different, the mic-tip is oriented in a different direction, and a couple of shaping differences likely as a result of the injection-molding process. But yeah, I don't see anything so drastic you wouldn't be able to at least get Level 1 approval.

  5. I'll open the tiny bag and list it off everything to make sure I'm not missing anything (only jj would know! lol). I'm considering making it a snowtrooper's if the only difference is the paint job. I found a cheap AR-15 stock on Amazon but I'm not sure if it'll be close enough. Maybe with a resin cheek rest piece (or even cannibalized off a Rubies?)

The ATI Strikeforce stock WILL fit on our blaster as it's what we used as a prototype for DragonCon. However, I can tell you right now, the Rubies one will almost assuredly be undersized as it is designed for small children and is much smaller than our full-sized blaster. Just a heads up before you go dropping cash and coming away disappointed!

  6. I spoke to a manager at Cinemark and was told "inside" the theatre you can not wear "masks, face paint, or fake weapons". However, one can be outside the theatre taking pictures or whatever. I would imagine this would be a policy one will find in most theatres.

Sounds even worse... if it's risky to wield a blaster and a helmet inside a private space like a movie theater for fear of being mistaken as an active shooter, seems like it'd be damn-near suicide to carry a WW2-analogue submachine gun with your face covered (which is illegal in public anyway) outside on the street... Surprised that a manager would even suggest doing that as an alternative.

  7. Would have been very sweet to see it called the F15D, but alas...

I kinda like F-11D. The E-11 was used by the Empire. This is used by the First Order, so it's the F-11. Not to mention that F comes after E in the English alphabet, so it's kind of appropriate for the direct descendant of the E-11. :)

I will call them the crocodile boots if you pardon me :D.

LOL, they certainly look the part!

Looking closely at Finn's boots while he is in his trooper gear ... I think you're right. Well done. Looking forward to trooping with you in Richmond at the premiere this coming December. :)

Hey buddy, I'd love to, but I'm not an actual 501st member yet :( ... I am hoping to have my TFA finished by then, but there's no guarantee I'll pass approval in time for the premiere. Either way, I will definitely be attending as many of the premieres as I can in costume... hopefully as a proud member of the 501st!

plasma blade for Kylo Ren's lightsaber apparently ooo

All lightsabers emit a plasma blade. That's nothing new for the Visual Dictionaries to point out.

  8. Also, note that Finn is NOT wearing the standard issue First Order boots but rather the boots that he wears in his "rebel" uniform...

    ------------

I had previously assumed that Finn ditched his entire armor set, including his white First Order boots, and "borrows" Poe's jacket and shoes after a certain pivotal point in the movie.

But this image leads me to believe that he is wearing the boots pictured on the cover of the Visual Directory the entire time; that they start off white but over the course of the film (due to sand, mud, dirt, sunbleaching, etc) they become the weathered tan seen at Celebration (and on Boyega's Instagram):

    http://i.imgur.com/ijQ8xzP.pnghttp://i.imgur.com/A1Jaf4F.jpg

Under the reddish/orange lighting of Celebration they looked quite brown, but the photo above that Boyega shared (likely taken under flourescent studio/office lighting) does a better job of implying they may have started out "trooper white" and become dulled/worn to that shade over time (or deliberately weathered by the prop department, most likely).

This detail doesn't seem to apply to any other FO troopers, and thus likely isn't of any concern to others here on FISD... but as someone who wants to attend the Premieres as an (accurate) Trooper Finn this is a game changer. On one hand, I do not need to worry about having a pair of FO trooper boots and then a pair of Rebel Finn boots. On the other hand, it means I can't just buy a pair of boots from one of the runs here and I'll need to get a custom-pair of Trooper Finn boots done up just for me (and then buy two pairs, so one can be clean and one can be dirty).

    UGH. RIP my wallet :(
