  1. So while I'm still waiting for my armor I figured it would be smart to get some of my other parts together. I was able to buy a belt kit from JAFO/Darren (not pictured because I don't want to open the package and lose anything).

I was able to order a pair of Cardinal gloves from Imperial Boots.

    img%5D

Now I already have a pair of TK7 Boots from back when I was going to make a regular trooper. I also have leather dye to make them black. However I might try to keep them just in case I do a regular trooper down the line.

    img%5D

I know that Imperial Boots is making a prototype Phasma boot for now however I have no idea what the production speed looks like for that. Instead I'm planning on trying to purchase a black shoe/boot from them.

Option 1: Is still dying the TK7

Option 2: Is buying the BlackOps shoe

    img%5D

Option 3: The Pilot7 boots seem to be the closest to the Phamsa boot CRL

    img%5D

If anybody has a different source for boots or can help me pick from the ones from Imperial Boots I would greatly appreciate it. I'm going crazy waiting. It's been over a month so I'm trying to focus on other things I can work on.

I'm also working on finishing the SE-44c with silver paint to remove the lines and fill imperfections. I'll then be able to paint the pieces the correct red and black that they need.

I meant an FISD Facebook group. I don't even know if there is one.

As for the boot armor, when I asked, Delilah said the artists did their illustrations based on her descriptions -- which said illustrations down go all the way down, to my annoyance. But she said she figured he'd have more armor parts like Phasma did than what a regular Stormtrooper has. So I'm sticking with sabatons.

In other news, Vincent sent me these pics of the prototype gloves. He said if there are at least ten people interested, they can start a run soon, so people who want gloves in time for TLJ can have them in time...

Oh PM me and let me know how I can get in on the prototype run! These are awesome. Also it looks like Phamsa still has armor parts covering her boots. The major decision would have to be when does the Phasma book take place. If it takes place closer to TFA then I can see the older shin/boot armor but if it's closer to TLJ then that should be closer to the other shin set-up. I'm leaning closer to the events of TFA but that's my thoughts so far.

I have found industrial silver paint to be a lot thicker but I have also used auto acrylic paint.

I tried brushing on acetone before but you can loose detail in areas you don't want to. I've not tried the vapor myself but again I would think some detail may be lost.

Spray putty / high build primer will work but you just need to go over a few times to get a nice build up.

Thanks Q I'll have to go pick up some silver paint!

I've been moving right along with this build while I wait for my armor. I think my paint job went great! So last night I added back the black in where it needed to go and glued in the cheek pieces as well. All I'm missing are my lenses and to paint the inside with black Plasti-dip. I also plan on including electronics.

Of course an obligatory me trying on the helmet.

    img%5D

I also need to add padding on the inside too.

I was able to print out the other side of my SE-44c however it didn't come out as good as I wanted it too. Hopefully I can fix my other printer and reprint it. Until then It'll have to do.

From the different sides it looks fine.

Now I took the photos of the SE-44c before work so I didn't really have a chance to work on having them fit better. I'll try when I get home tonight to clean it up even more. I also have all the dyes to change my boots to black and my gloves to red. I can't wait for BBB day, however since it's local i'll just have to pick it up when it's ready so no extra time for shipping! Time to order a belt from JAFO and figure out where I can get the canvas pouches.

    So pretty!!

And I had utterly forgotten you're in Vegas. Oof. Did you at least not lose anyone, personally, I hope? :(

Thank you for asking. My fiance had a friend who was at the concert. She was shot in the leg, luckily she was able to escape and is expected to make a full recovery. Almost everyone here it seems has had a connection to it. It's been a tough week, however we are Vegas Strong and the community has been rallied together. I'm proud of my city. At any rate it makes me want to finish this build and get out there and bring joy to those around me.

  5. So after an extremely rough week and the tragedy that occurred on the First of this month here in Las Vegas I was finally able to get some work done this past weekend.

I'm envious of you being started already. :P I've got everything mapped out (deposit here, order this thing that needs a lot of lead time there, accumulate these  materials while I wait, etc.), but the biggest factor is the armor and helmet, and I'm going the Anovos route. Everyone I know there has faith that the first shipment they get from their factories in China will be in their warehouse by the end of this month. We'll see.

    --Jonah

I hope Anovos ships out for everyone soon! Plus I've still got some parts I need to order/figure out.

Is he wearing a regular FOTK or the Captain armor? From the book descriptions, it sounds like it's the same armor as Phasma's, just red instead of chrome. It's MOSTLY the same. IIRC, the cod is different (Flametrooper instead, but KB makes those, too) and individual finger armor.

Yeah according to the only images we have Cardinal has FOTK armor with a red paint scheme along with the Captain boot Armor that Phasma has. Phasma follows the beat of her own drum so she has a lot of extra armor parts.

So I started out my Saturday with taping of the inside of my helmet.

    img%5D

I had already wet sanded it and prepped it earlier.

    img%5D

I set up my small box in the corner of the garage and got to work. I was able to put down two coats on the helmet. I haven't touched it since trying to make sure it sets correctly.

Here is the back of the freshly painted helmet with 1 coat of paint.

It seems to have lost a bit of it's glossy finish but I was planning on doing a clear coat of gloss to protect it anyways.

I also made major progress on 3D printing my SE-44c.

A majority of the black pieces came out good, however there were a few that printed out too small so I have to fix them

     and try again.

    img%5D

I started using my red filament for the original white parts. I'm going to be painting this blaster when it's all printed for a better finish.

I was able to print of the major left part last night and I'll print of the final shell part later on today.

    img%5D

I still haven't been able to dye my gloves and boots but progress is still progress! I hope to have even more done this week.

  6. So my one of my 3D printers is having some major problems right now so my red F11-D and SE-44C will have to wait until I can get it all sorted out. I ordered the dye for my gloves and boots. I purchased my armor kit last night so once it's ready and I go pick it up I'll post it as well. As per the suggestion/references that Pereginus/Jonah put up in my CRL discussion I added the Phasma boot/armor parts to the my kit order.

I also received the Rusteoleum I was going to use.

    img%5D

    img%5D

How fitting that it's called Cardinal Red! I'll be using this for the armor and to add more of a gloss to the 3D printed pieces. Thanks for checking out my build thread!

Black, by the precedent of the only other troopers with boot armor, even though their armor is different colors. The Flametroopers have white armor, white boot armor, and black boots. Phasma has chrome armor, chrome boot armor, and black boots. So it wouldn't matter that Cardinal's armor is red. That's not relevant in either of the other cases.

    For reference, standard Stomrtrooper boots:

    Flametrooper boots:

    And Phasma's boots:

    2F2ooNG.jpg

Oh thank you for the reference pictures. I totally understand what I need to do concerning the boots now. I might as well use my FOTK boots and dye them black.

  8. So if that's the case would that the boots be black or would they be red underneath the armor pieces?

    37 minutes ago, Peregrinus said:

From what I've seen in the Visual Dictionary and from pictures at the various exhibitions, all the First Order Stormtroopers (except the Snowtroopers) have the same boots. The regular troopers, including heavy weapon and riot control, have them in white with black soles. The Flametroopers and Phasma have them in black with black soles. Not being able to see under the armor pieces, I'm not 110% certain, but the overall lines are the same, the soles are the same, and the visible portions at the sides are the same. It would be easier from a production standpoint. Plus, since they re-used the Stormtrooper boots for the 'Troopers in Rogue One, I think they re-used the black ones for the Death Troopers. I'd have to check.

But I'm just getting them in black from Gio.

I told Vincent they should just focus on finding the same leather they use for their existing First Order Stormtrooper gloves in red and it should all be good. I don't think it'll take them too long, but in a pinch, from what I remember from living in Vegas, there are at least a few non-Tandy leather shops around. You should be able to find a good red dye and someone on hand who can give you tips on how to achieve the best result (or there's also the internet, I suppose).

Some new data. :) Delilah told me the illustrators worked from her descriptions, so I was right in considering the prose the primary source, with everything else to be judged by how closely it follows that.

She was, in fact, thinking of Phasma's boots and cape and paralleling Cardinal with her. So black boots with three-part armor coverage, with the armor the color of the rest of the armor. I also asked for clarification on the cape matter, since the description in the book doesn't mention a trim stripe on his at all, let alone color. If she told the illustrators gray, fine. If they made that up out of lack of data, I don't know how we should treat that. If she intended it to be apparent his and Phasma's capes were identical symbols of rank, she might have presumed they'd know that to include the red trim. I'll keep y'all posted.

As far as ImperialBoots, I let Vincent know all of this as it's been developing and he just sent me this:

I'll leave the call of adding him to the FB group to someone more admin-y.

This is awesome data! Well I was able to add the Phasma style boot armor parts to my armor purchase so I'll be good to go. i now need to figure out what type of boots Phasma has in case ImperialBoots takes forever to finish making them. I also need to figure out how to dye the gloves for the same reason. I guess with the cape trim we'll have to go off the illustrations (Grey Stripe) until more information becomes available.

  10. 7 minutes ago, Peregrinus said:

Good food for thought. I've just re-skimmed Phasma for pertinent details and to make sure of the wording. Regarding the cape trim, I am specifically going with Setacolor's #89 "Taupe" fabric paint. There are various sources, but I'm getting mine from Dharma Trading -- link for those not wanting to run it down themselves. Frankly, I'm a little puzzled by the choice to depict is as gray -- both his and Phasma's are repeatedly referred to as "Captain's cape"s, and different colored trim soooooorta indicates a difference between them of some kind. Maybe gray is standard, and Phasma went with red because she does what she wants.

    ***

Blasters, now... In order, and trying not to give anything story-related away... First, he snaps binders on the spy's wrists. A minute or so later, he jams his blaster into her belly. So he had it holstered while his hands were occupied with the binders. Another minute or so after that, he spins her to walk in front of him and jabs her in the back with his blaster. Also implying one-handed use. Ditto the trip to the interrogation room, where he keeps holding the blaster on her while punching things into the lift and door panels. After he gets her manacled into the interrogation chair and makes sure the room is secure, it's back on his hip, "red and gleaming". And, toward the end of the book, he "pulls out his red blaster". The F-11 is majority black -- especially from the top, which is what would be facing out when holstered. The most white visible would be the power cell housing and the butt cap. I feel like the mostly-covering case of the SE-44C is a better fit for "red and gleaming". He also spends time over the rest of the book habitually tapping it and resting his hand on it, which are more things one does with a holstered sidearm than something the size of a blaster rifle. But, moving on...

He has been in combat and has killed enemies of the First Order and he has trained all the new kids on all the weapons, so I have zero doubt he knows how to handle an F-11 along with everything else. There's also a passage from right after his promotion when he was accompanying Hux the Elder, "blaster at the ready". He doesn't seem to have been carrying it for the events of the book, though. At a point I won't mention, he's going through and getting dressed and ready, and there's mention that he checks "each of his weapons" -- indicating plural, to me -- but then "ensuring his blaster is primed" -- singular. An observation of the costume variants is that the troopers that are carrying the bigger guns -- F-11 or megablaster -- have SE-44's on their hips, while the ones with the riot batons and shields have F-11s on their hips. Between those main points, I feel that blaster referred to is the same sidearm implied throughout. So. My ultimate conclusion is that Cardinal carries an F-11 when he's on guard duty for Brendol Hux or going into combat, and not at other times. I don't know whether he keeps one in his quarters, but I figure not or he would have prepped it, too. I don't know if he has one reserved for him in the armory -- possibly one with red trim and a fixed stock extension -- or if he just checks one out when needed.

(And I misremembered in my original post, above -- it was a riot baton he picked up, and another one that Phasma took off the rack. Not a blaster rifle.)

    ***

And as for the boots... They've been referred to as leather in the past. The only commentary I've found on First Order boots one way or the other so far is them being pointed out as "positive-grip boots" in the Visual Dictionary. Not much help. I've been reacquainting myself with everything since this all came up over the last week or two. Phasma and the Flametroopers both have black boots and three-piece boot armor setups. The armor pieces around the ankle and heel are slightly different shapes between the two (and another different style is on the Snowtroopers), but the main sabaton piece conformal to the toe and arch are the same between the two (just chrome on Phasma). And the spy is specifically noting it as "flawless plastoid" that her blood landed on. I've only ever seen the word applied to armor pieces, not anything that has to flex. I'm gonna stand by the red being boot armor.

Oh I completely agree about the SE-44C being red and black in its construction and as you've noted he would have his own F-11D for guard duty so it would be safe to assume if they made everything else red for him, that would be included as well. I'm going to be printing both out in red and black just for fun and if one doesn't get added to the CRL no big deal.

Now to the boots. There's the problem with having such limited images of him. I completely forgot about Flametroopers having the 3 piece armor set up So I was thinking it was Phasma being Phasma again (Like with the red cape stripe or her custom prototype helmet) and doing her own thing. If that's the case then somebody needs to email Imperial Boots and tell them not to do the boot run! I also need to find out if I can get the extra pieces when I get my armor kit!

  11. 14 hours ago, Peregrinus said:

I'm getting everything staged to start this build, myself. Wanted to offer what I've gleaned from reading the novel, and bounce what I see off you folks.

    • Phasma's armor differences are hers and hers alone. The altered greaves are because she's taller than standard, and like that. Her helmet is also a one-off, being a prototype design General Hux the elder rejected, but that she preferred. Cardinal is (for his life prior to and through most of the book) a party-line-toeing, perfect-paragon First Order Stormtrooper. He wears the standard approved armor and helmet. Just in red.

    • Regarding which, I'm going with RustOleum's gloss paint-and-primer "Cardinal Red". The captured Resistance spy spits blood on his boot and notices in passing her blood and the boot are different shades of red.

    • Even more relevant to the boots... The promo poster cuts off just below the knees. But the agent's spat blood hits "plastoid". Hence, to my mind, armor. So I'm doing my build with Phasma-style three-piece boot armor (in red) over black boots.

    • He jabs his blaster in the agent's back several times, one-handed. This seems more in keeping with an SE-44C than an F-11. Between that, his training role aboard-ship, events late in the story where he takes a blaster rifle off a rack, and the poster art, I'm going with he has his sidearm, but normally doesn't go around carrying a rifle. And yes, per book description and others' mentions above, the casing is gloss red instead of white. I would have an F-11 as optional, and in standard black-and-white.

    • Just specifically pointing out that the palms of his gloves are red instead of the standard white, also.

    • Lastly, the cape. Both book cover and poster show it off the opposite shoulder as Phasma's. I am a little curious at how people are seeing the cape trim. From the instant I picked the book up in the book store the weekend it came out to right now, I see that stripe as a warm medium gray -- not maroon.

Oh -- and an additional thing. There are two more images floating around out there so far. One of Phasma and Cardinal in a firefight, and one (posted upthread) a close-up of him holding his helmet under his arm. Both of these are unofficial fan-art. Good, but not to be viewed as reference sources.

I had been accumulating to build a heavy-weapons trooper. Then this book came out. I'm glad now that I ran into delays. :)

Oh good Info! Thank you! I agree along the lines of the cape trim/stripe as a gray. I'm still going to print an F-11D in red so it matches, however I could also . Talking about the boots though. Could't they still be the normal FOTK boots but red in color? The "plastoid" could refer to the material. I know they aren't going to be using the words leather to describe the boots or gloves. Once again thank you especially for the Rustoeleum tip! I was looking for a good paint /color to use.

  12. 47 minutes ago, gmrhodes13 said:

It really depends on the paint and masking tape you use, I find enamel paints tend to stick as they are quite thick, another reason I prefer using automotive acrylic paint, dries fast and coats are much thinner. I also take the tape off before it is fully dry, easier to separate the tape from paint while slightly wet.

What type of automotive acrylic paint do you use? I don't want to spend the extra money on having somebody else paint it if I can do it myself. I know that a paint job can make or break this armor. Plus Q your armor looks amazing and if I can achieve that level of quality then I'm set.

  13. Thanks everyone for the support! I was able to install the aerator I got from Vaderpaintsutdios and I started working on painting.

    img%5D

I then taped up the helmet to try and put the black mesh paint on.

    img%5D

    img%5D

    img%5D

However the paint stuck to the tape and when I removed it part came off. I've been debating on getting it airbrushed red at a custom shop and given my history with paint jobs I think that's the safest route to go.

I also started reprinting my F-11D with a red filament instead of white. It's not the right shade of red right now but it's a lot less challenging to paint those pieces than armor pieces. I'll post pictures of that as well when I have more than 3 small pieces printed out.

  14. So for those of you who haven't seen my New CRL post I've got my heart set on one of the newest characters to come out of Force Friday II. Captain Cardinal!

    img%5D

    img%5D

Sadly these are the only two images we have of him. The first is an exclusive poster from Barnes and Noble and the other is the back cover of the book. There are plenty on descriptions of him in the book although he is a regular FOTK with a red paint scheme lol. :laugh1:

At any rate I was planning on doing a regular TFA FOTK before the book was released so I was already in motion to do it. Time to just add a cape and change the color scheme from white to red!

I already have a set of TK7 gloves and boots from Imperialboots but they are still white. I'm unsure about dyeing them so if anybody has any tips or a trustworthy process for doing it then I'm going to wait until IB does their run of red.

I also have my undersuit from stormtrooperundersuit.com.

I also picked up my helmet from KB Props on Monday. Gotta go with the local armor maker right? I'm so stoked to be working with him and hopefully the rest of my garrison on this.

I hope so! Captain Cardinal really struck a chord with me and I would love for him to be an approved armor.

  16. Thanks everyone. I'm going to get my helmet tonight so I can get started on this. If I end up having to move it over to Spec Ops I will but I know this forum is full of some of the most helpful troopers around so I'd like to stay if possible. I can't wait to get to work on this!

  17. Oh thank you for the links! I was looking for them. So it's a matter of getting the armor built and submitting multiple angled shots for approval? If so that seems extremely doable. If not then I guess I'll have to wait and see if he shows up again somewhere else.

  18. Awesome! Time to get to work. I wasn't sure if should even attempt it but now I know I should! Since the only difference between his armor and a regular FOTK is the color I might as well start a build thread for the majority of it on here so I can get help if I need it.

  19. So during Force Friday II the new Phasma novel came out. I don't want to give out any spoilers but there is a new character named Captain Cardinal. He is a captain in the First Order much like Phasma, however he is in charge of training and conditioning the younger recruits while Phasma is in charge of teenagers through regular troopers.

Here he is on the special Barnes and Noble edition poster that came with the book.

    img%5D

And here he is with a helmet on appearing on the back cover of the book.

    img%5D

There are also some descriptions of him in the book. From everything I gathered the only difference between him and a regular FOTK is the Captain's cape and The red hue of everything he wears/uses.

Would this even be an armor that could be approved? I was just about to start a FOTK and I absolutely fell in love with this character and his motivations. Plus him armor is pretty sweet lol. So before I get started trying to paint/dye everything red I wanted to check on here about it first. If not then I'll get to work on my normal FOTK so no harm no foul.

  20. As soon as I can turns out to be a few months later lol.  :laugh1:  Even through it's been some time I was still hard at work. Saving up my photos until I could make another major push and here it is!

Fist up was rebuilding the thigh. I started on the left first. After ripping off the old cover strips I had to rebuild the inner sections so I could attach a "Cover Strip".

After creating the extension pieces I figured it would be a good time to give them a test fit.

Here is the front of the left thigh. Tape was definitely my friend.

The back of the left thigh.

The test fit. I didn't like the way it gave my leg extra space so I decided to taper the extension.

Here is the tapered product from the from.

    IMG_4812_zpsqbfqypoo.jpg

I repeated the same process for the right leg. Here is is before the tapering.

    After the tapering.

Now I did use the cover strip construction method however I didn't want such massive cover strips because it would look too weird. So instead I went hunting here on the forums and found a thread by HansDC and how he used apoxy to fill in the gaps to try and make it look like one piece connected by a false cover strip.

    The false cover strips.

Then is was time for painting/Repainting a few sections. The repaint was for the sides of the ab section, kidney plate, and the new right forearm cover strips. The new cover strips for the right forearm was due to how loose it appeared/felt. So I remade it to fit better.

The painting for the first time was the new biceps, thighs, and ammo pack for the right thigh.

Here is everything after being primed.

Here is everything with the final coat.

At this point I've pretty much finished the armor. :jc_doublethumbup:

So I figured it was time for a full armor test fit!  :smiley-sw013:

    IMG_5069_zpsddxiy3lt.jpg

I know my thighs are hanging low. I'm getting a better set of compression pants to they fit up higher.

Here are some other photos I took just messing around.

Pulling out the big gun (DLT-19)!

And finally one with my bucket off.

    IMG_5077_zpsrmptlt9p.jpg

My TD fell off but I couldn't stoop down to pick it up  :laugh1: . Hopefully I'll "break" the armor in and be able to move easier as time goes on.

There are still some minor things I need to fix. My right shoulder strap broke off or came off rather, so I'll be re-gluing that along with touching up some spots with paint. I'm disappointed in myself over the thighs. I feel that they didn't come out the way I wanted them too. I doubt I'll be able to make anything but basic approval because of them which sucks because I've done everything else, but I understand . Probably at a later date I'll either buy a new pair or completely start over on a new set. However I'm proud that I stuck with it and continued to work even though I experienced setbacks. It's been a long time coming and I'm so close to finally joining the 501st!!! :salute:

Although now I'm already starting to plan the next set of armor!  :laugh1:

  21. It wasn't shown beforehand because the pictures were lost but I had filled in the ab shims with apoxy and painted over them in a rush to finish. However the apoxy was still extremely visible and it created a very noticeable seam. At this point I'm still doing everything for Centurion but I'm not sure if I'll make it there. I've been working on the same set of armor for over a year and a half now. I'm ready to just finish so I can work on other projects. With that being said I did try to sand down the apoxy off of the shims and I plan on repainting them when the weather allows.

    IMG_4142_zpsnaphfxtn.jpg

I also wanted to try on my biceps and mess around while wearing them considering I have the full upper body at least put together. (Yes I know my biceps are on wrong). I've also attached the black straps for the shoulder bells/biceps.

    The action shot.

    IMG_4125_zpsxegi5bfk.jpg

I've also realized my right forearm the wrist is pretty large and it causes the piece to slid around. I'm planning on fixing that as well.

For Christmas I received a Stormtrooper snuggie as a joke. However, it comes in handy when I want to stay warm while playing Star Wars Battlefront.

It feels good to kickback and relax after a long day of blasting rebel scum!

    IMG_4096_zps1cwphuz4.jpg

There is quite a lot of small tweaks that I need to make to fully finish off some pieces so I can start to see myself as a real TK soon. I hope to get more done as soon as I can.

  22. Well after a productive November and December I figured it was time for a major update! So be prepared with a major photo filled update!

Going back to some pieces that needed a respray. The turned out alright. I would rather have not messed up in the first place but I think it will be alright for the most part.

    IMG_3819_zpsoo5jryb0.jpg

The belt in the middle is pretty much the worst part. The middle section is a little rough when looking directly at it but from far away it doesn't look that bad.

    IMG_3820_zpsdte0psbd.jpg

The shoulder strap came out alright too. I plan on sticking the messed up section towards the inner part of my neck and to the back so it isn't seen.

    IMG_3821_zpslkjzznlr.jpg

As did the end cap for the TD.

    IMG_3822_zpspvaspugn.jpg

I did trim/square up the teeth. Hopefully it's enough of a trim. I added in the frown mesh with velcro so if I need to trim more I can.

    IMG_3823_zps6kahsdci.jpg

I added the snaps to the bottom of the posterior armor.

    IMG_3824_zpsm10kociu.jpg

Attachment of the shoulder bells to the chest section.

    IMG_3971_zpsj3gtnk7j.jpg

For some reason all of my other photos did not transfer so I'll have to retake them/ post them later. The only one I have is a combination photo I posted on Facebook/Instagram of a partial test fit/helmet picture/original armor kit.

    IMG_4157_zpsnsoperiz.jpg

Now the ab sections has been painted (sadly not shown here) and the kidney /posterior parts are attached with snaps. I'm still working on the biceps and thighs as well as the electronics for the helmet.

It's all a work in process still.
