  1. Hey everyone!  I was just reading through the CRL and I think I found a small issue with the descriptions of the Thermal Detonator.  For Version A, the CRL indicates in the first bullet that the tube is white, and then later says the tube should be gray.  I think the first bullet needs to be edited to say: "...and include gray tube with white end caps...".

It also says "The thermal detonator has two thin strips approximately 1/8" away form the end caps", which I believe only applies to Version B and not Version A.

    Thermal Detonator, Version A

    For 501st approval:

    • Shall be attached to the kidney armor (not belt) 1 inch above the top of the belt and include white tube with white end caps and flat panel along the center.
    • The thermal detonator has two thin strips approximately 1/8” away from the end caps.
    • The thermal detonator tube is gray.
    • The thermal detonator end caps and control panel are white. * The thermal detonator is attached without visible attachments.

  2. After talking to a few of the garrison folks, I'm leaving the forearms for later.  Now my plan is to focus on trimming the rest of the kit so I can bring it to a future armor party and do some test fitting with some folks that have done this before.  So tonight I just focused on trimming and sanding the thigh pieces.  Below is my "trimmed armor" table, which will hopefully quickly gain additional pieces :)  (It was quite nice to feel like I had accomplished something, as it has been a while....)

  3. Alright, its finally time.  I figured I've waited long enough to start a build that its time to motivate myself through starting a build log/diary, getting help and assistance where I can, and generally forcing myself to feel guilty about not working on it because I know my loyal watchers will be waiting desperately for each new post...and so it begins.

About 2 years ago I bought an AP armor kit with the intention of becoming a Stormtrooper.  However, I was in school and working full time so I knew I wouldn't be able to put any time into it as my weekends were almost wall to wall homework.  Last August I graduated with my Bachelors.  I managed to procrastinate until January when a friend invited me to a local garrison build party.  I took the virgin box, loaded it in the car, and went to the build party.  Got a few pointers on where to start and after getting home, with much fear in my heart, I started making my first cuts.

Fast forward to 10 months later and I really haven't achieved much.  I started with the arms and was having a hell of a time getting things to line up, couldn't even get the first arm to close with outside cover strips.

This side looks pretty good to me, although there is definitely some overlap at the end, but from what I've seen thats not abnormal.

The other side that isn't fully closed yet.

    IMG_20151002_182609.jpg

This was where the issues came in, way too much extra, and it doesn't line up right.  There was no way to hold it into position and glue it at the same time.  No matter what method of clamps, tape, glue, hands, or feet.

So I posted here and got some advice, which aside from the suggestions of boiling water baths and feared heat guns, was to try starting with inside cover strips.  So a few weeks/months ago, however long ago it was, I started down that path and things seemed to be more possible, but I haven't gotten too far.  I'm far more hopeful with this approach though, since even if things don't line up right, its much easier to "force" and glue it into place this way with inner strips than outer strips.

So while I was getting frustrated and impatient with the forearms, I decided to switch to the biceps.  Again, haven't gotten very far on the trimming.  First pictures is the untrimmed, second is the other one that I have started cutting and trimming already.  BTW, in case I didn't mention this before, I just finally got the Lexan Scissors with curved blade.  After a few test cuts on excess ABS, they seem WAY easier to make precision cuts with than any other methods I was using.

    Untrimmed

The two trimmed pieces being put "together".  Still needs work...uhh, lots of work...

    IMG_20151002_182743.jpg

Inner bicep piece from the end, leaving lots of extra in there right now, but need to trim it back.  Doing so with Lexan scissors will likely help do this easier.

So anyway.  That's as far as I've gotten thus far in 2 years.  I hope to speed it up a bit as I have 3 more...yes 3 more...kits on the way arriving anywhere between next week and 3-4 months from now.  So I need to get some confidence, progress, and patience going or I'm just gonna bury myself in disappointment heheh :)  I will be attending the San Diego Makers Faire the next 2 days, so I'm thinking of bringing the legs, pencil, ruler, and Lexan scissors and doing a little trimming while I'm sitting there.

Any feedback, encouragement, chastising, or other motivational methods welcome and appreciated!

  4. So I've finally started my build.  YAY!!!  I've trimmed all the pieces for forearms and started trimming one side of the biceps.  Since I'm using E6000, I've only been glueing one portion of one of the forearms per night to make sure I don't make any mistakes and to just get my first piece under my belt.

Well, thats where problems have begun.  I'm at the point where I've put the cover strip on both sides and connected the two pieces on one side for one forearm, but now I can't get the other side to come together.  There is too much tension trying to pull the pieces apart.  I've tried LOTS of clamps, rare earth magnets, tape, etc to try and keep it together, but there is just too much tension in the plastic pulling the pieces apart.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, this is VERY frustrating.  (I've done everything I can not to take a saw to my plastic).

  5. I have not yet purchased my armor, so I don't have any experience in building it, but one thing I saw in the threads is that this is a common problem. The solution that people seem to suggest is the use of rare earth magnets in the areas where the clamps won't reach. Typically placing a row of them on the top and bottom of the area being glued to help hold the two pieces together.

There is some discussion about these in this forum article: http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=20066&hl=magnets&fromsearch=1

  6. Thank you for the link. I have registered there and am waiting for basic access to post an introduction. I think the hardest decisions in front of me now are:

    1) Which "vendor" and type of kit to get. I"m seriously indecisive. Been reading a lot and I"m getting it narrowed down. Keep going back and forth between HIPS and ABS based on the listed pro's and cons and things I've read in the forums.

    2) Do I want to buy a helmet that someone has already constructed just to get started. This would serve not only to give me a head start on getting my armor put together, but would also give me a great physical reference for building my own in the future. Or do I just bite the bullet and try and put one together myself, fully knowing it is well within my ability to destroy it at some point through inexperienced mistakes :)

This is a great site, and a great community. I love the positive vibe and helpful nature of everyone in the forums. This is definitely helping to ease my anxiety over attempting this.

  7. Thanks guys! Appreciate the welcome and the extra information. I'm inundated with information and video's. Can't wait to get started! As my handle implies, I'm very Impatient, so its taking all my will power to continue reading and not just jump in head first :)

LadyInWhite - No, I actually did not come by the booth so didn't get to meet you. I didn't even know there were booths for these things until very late on Sunday, and buy then I was running around making my last minute purchases. I know Felix who presented in the Costuming 101 Panel, so I came to see him and jest about me knowing someone famous. Walked out with more than I intended.

  8. Hi All!

My name is Scott, I live in San Diego, CA. I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a StormTrooper outfit for a few years now. Well today I found out that all those troopers I see most likely built their own as I listened to the 501st Costuming 101 at Comic-Con. Of course like anyone else I've been in love with Star Wars and Troopers in particular since I was a kid. Buying a Trooper costume would be a dream come true, building one would be OMG amazing!!!!

So, I think over the next year I'm gonna give it a shot to try and build one. My main downfall is I have zero, yes zero, artistic ability. I've never really built anything. Just not the kind of skills I have, so I come in sub-novice. Not sure n00b even really describes the level I would be starting at, heheh. But, the panel today gave me some hope that I could pull this off, just going to have to put a bit more effort in. Hence, I come here looking for pointers, direction, people who will understand my daily/weekly desire to make additional holes in my walls with flying power tools as frustration takes over.

So far it looks like an awesome community, and I look forward to getting to know you all better. I dont know what kind of Trooper I want yet. I dont know exactly where to begin, but since its only been a few hours since I found out you all existed, I think I've got a lot of reading ahead of me on the forums here.

Nice to meet you all, wish me luck!
