  1. Wow, ok so its been a little bit since I looked at my post on how to make one of these. I'll see what I can do to post the pics to give a tutorial on how to tool the leather like I did for my pauldron. Basically you first need to create a stencil of what you want on the leather once you have the shape of leather cut out how you want it. You then wet the leather, and taking a stylus, you copy the image over to your leather. From there, you take a swivel knife to lightly cut the major lines of the design into you leather. From there you take a beveling tool and a mallet around the outer edges of your design, compressing the leather to make the main image stand up and out off the "background" From there you take what ever other tools to create different effects, such as a pear to give the background (like on my pauldron) the hammered look within the cog. From there, leather stain or paint the parts you want painted. Then I use a spray on Leather Shene by Fiebling's to protect the color and give it that shiny look. From there, the black parts of my pauldron were created by cutting 2 pieces of black died pigskin into the appropriate shapes. Holes were punched through the cowhide leather as well as the pig to give lines of holes to created the necessary pattern. As I stitched I filled each pocket with a poly-fill used for pillows. The piping around the outside was creating by cutting long strips of pigskin with 3 roles of holes punched through it (in addition to a matching row of holes through the cow). I used 2 needles in a simple hand saddle stitch to get through the stitching since i don't have a $1500 leather sewing machine. 3 hole rows go through the pigskin due to how you wrap it around the cowhide. Its flipped into an "e" shape around the cow. So the top is fold in to give you a straight edges so that your needle will go through (from top to bottom) Row 2 Pig-> Row 1 Pig -> Cowhide -> Row 3 of Pig. I'll do what i can to create a picture tutorial. If you have any questions feel free to write back in the meantime :)

  2. Im posting this here to see what the forum thinks. I wanted to make a trooper who could wear a pauldron that wasn't a sandy so here is the place. I wanted to put my leatherwork skills to the test as its been my hobby for the past 6 years. I got the idea to make a custom pauldron from seeing several standard pauldrons with event patches glued to them. I thought it would be neat to make a pauldron with my TKID and my Garrison crest. Im currently working on a second for my unit CO. This took an extreme amount of time due to all the saddle stitching being done by hand and not machine so I don't know believe I could consider going into mass production of these by any means. However I will keep the forum posted on my progress of different leatherwork possibilities.

    What do you think?

  3. Ok So here are a few images of what Ive been working on. The first is my Doopy doo's blaster. Then Armor shots, then some of the leatherworks. Since i'm a Leatherworker, I had to tool my first holster and i wanted to try making a custom pauldron for the heck of it . It's turing out well too! (Dont worry, I'll have a non-custom regular holster for standard troops. This is obviously unfinished. But the images are first hand tooled and carved onto the leather, then hand painted. Im creating the piping and the sections around your neck out of black pigskin stuffed with a poly fill. I'll post pics as i finish it

  4. Did you build your TK in a month? That's speed! Hope your leather accessories turn out well.

I use photoshop to resize images, then "save for web" which compresses the file. Are you using a PC? Microsoft Paint should be able to resize images as well; at least the Windows 7 version does. Haven't used paint in years. It's best to upload the images to an image storage site like flikr or photobucket, then link to them in your thread post. Most image storage sites have resize functions as well so you don't have to worry about software.

That sounds really fun, easy and simple but, im a Mac user....somethings we just dont get standard like PC'ers :( Any suggestions for me using this kind of machine?

  5. Wow, its been quite a crazy few weeks. My apologies for not being able to post again right away. But good news! My TK build is complete all but simple things like a better voice amp and some fans, ect. I'll post a few pics and also some pics of some things im working on. Seeing that my hobby is leatherwork, Im getting into crafting some different fully leather (not vinyl) accessories for TK's and TD's. Once I get into the swing of things and are at a good place to make some custom orders happen if someone's interested I will let yall all know.

Hrm...ok, the files are too large. Anyone know how i could shrink them?

  6. Hello, I am seeking help for finding the right size armor for me. I am 6'2" and 195lbs. I have been in contact from members of my garrison (which by the way have been totally awesome and so helpful) I think the AM armor isfor bigger guys but reading some topics here FT seems to make a larger mold also. I really like the FT helmet, do you think FT will fit ok without major mod. btw I like ANH stunt the best.

    Thanks,

    Corey

Hey, So I just recently ordered my TK armor from Rt-mod. Im 6'1" and weigh just under 230 now. I was concerned for my build as well but here are the critical measurements rob gave me for his armor to fit you.

Here are the critical measurements for reference:

    thighs - 26"

    claves - 17.5"

    forearms - 13.5"

    biceps - 16.5"

    waist - 40"

Beyond those we may need to shim for fit.

I fit into those measurements just fine. He makes great armor, get great reviews and his customer service is excellent, always ready to answer and questions and help in any way :)

    Hope this helps!

  7. What I did for my blaster (which I just finished) was that I went with the Hasbro E-11 then I modified it with a mod kit from www.doopydoos.com. With some simple 5 min hardening apoxy from hobby lobby I attached all the mods in one evening then gave it a couple good coats of rustoleum flat black paint for plastics (since the current in store E-11's are white). It looks great! I'll post the pics of it this evening when I get home :)

  8. Hi Everyone! Glad to get out here on the forums as I begin my first TK armor set!

My name is Alex Brown and I have actually just moved to Victoria, Texas where there appears to be no other 501st'ers around unless I drive a bit to Corpus, Houston or San Antonio. Im out here serving a year of internship as I build so I'll be a member of the Star Garrison for a while, then move back to Pennsylvania for a year (my last year of grad school in Gettysburg) then I don't know where i'll be going next. We shall see :) Not to mention Im from S.C. (Greenwood to be exact) So really, I'm all over the place; which means more options for future trooping!

All that being said, Im stoked Im finally putting my nose to the grind stone. I just finished the paint job on my E-11 and Im breaking in my CAboots as I write this post :)

Looking forward to the conversation and camaraderie!

    -Alex

  9. Just wanted to introduce myself to the forums!

My name is Alex Brown and Im getting together my first TK Build (ANH-Stunt).

Armor is getting made by Rob at rt-mod and he's been a phenomenal guy to work with thus far.

Since my initial general questions email, ive gotten responses by 3 different members offering help. The support and welcome into the community has been much appreciated so thanks guys!

A little about myself, Im currently in Victoria, Tx serving First English Lutheran Church as their Intern/Vicar as part of my theological education for my MDiv (Master of Divinity).

I'll graduate from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, PA in 2012 and then I'll be preparing for ordination as a Lutheran Pastor.

Ive always loved SW and got stoked about the opportunity to be a part of a group that reaches out through their hobby and passion to charity and children.

Looking forward to the forums the posting and the camaraderie that is the 501st and especially that within the TK ranks!

    Pax,

    Alex
