  1. James, thanks for the information. I just got a few 5V fans in the mail yesterday and have not tried them with the 4 AA battery pack set up yet, so your advice will save me from burning them out! Would 2AA batteries be able to run the 5Vfan for a sufficient amount of time or am I wasting my time and just stick with the 12Vs? Hoping to salvage my wasted purchase!

Yes, two 1.5v AA batteries (a total of 3 volts) will safely run a 5v fan with no issues at all... there again, lithium cells are gonna give you longer lasting performance. A 3 to 5 volt rechargeable lithium battery pack may be an even better way to go in the long run.

Also, when purchasing these small fans to put in your helmet... take a look at the rpm rating and cfm the fan puts out. A higher rating can really help with better airflow and performance in heat-related trooping situations. :)

  2. FYI... you never want to run any electronic device at a higher voltage than it's rated at. It will burn up very fast if not instantly! The voltage rating is not the issue of how quickly it drains the battery, it's the current draw.

Personally, I find the 12v fan with a 9v Lithium power source seems to work the best for trooping. The weight ratio in the helmet is much better too. :)

  3. As it gets hotter (and more humid in some cases) in the Northern Hemisphere you need to be extra careful while trooping. We don't need ill TKs clogging up the medical bay.

Good point Tiffanie, I have an outdoor event to troop at next week and it's already hovering around 100 degrees daily here in North Texas!!! B)

  4. Thanks tkrestonva! I know that AM is often dismissed as an armor kit for "John Citizen" and not for the serious trooper. I just wanted to show that there is more to it than that when it comes to serious decision making and I can safely say having had the armor arrived I made the right call.

Now it's just up to my build skills to get it right!

Lucas, thumbs up on the AM armor choice! My AM armor is trooped in constantly and seems quite allright with my squad members (Star Garrison- North Texas Squad). I would consider myself a "serious trooper" too... serious enough to have been granted EIB status with my AM kit. ;)

  5. It's closer. I sanded this thing for 3 hours with 120 - 1,000 - 2,000 then applied novus scratch remover and spray on turtle wax. Those tiny sandpaper scratches are tough to get out. I think a higher grit sandpaper and wet sanding will most likely fix that issue. More sanding is in order and maybe also a buffer. You also need to decide on Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy or Rustoleum high performance enamel paint. I don't know for sure, but I assume either one would match T/MC armor fairly well.

Tim, FWIW... I used Rustoleum Professional High Performance Enamel (Gloss White) on my helmet. That stuff is rock hard once it cures. Should be a great match!

  6. So on Sunday, TrooperTim and Thomas were kind enough to come to my house and instruct me on trimming my kit pieces. My husband was awesome enough to smoke a brisket with a homemade rub, and even cooked all the side dishes for lunch: steamed broccoli, yeast rolls, baked beans, salad, and shrimp cocktail. I don't think anyone went hungry ;)

The guys also lent me some tools to use, as well...and brought printed instructions, sandpapers....man, they really took care of me! Tim is a total pro and made it all look so easy. He knocked out the biggest piece in 20 minutes! Thomas is an amazing teacher, and his instructions have really stuck with me. I honestly can't thank either of them enough.

I've put some new pics up on my cubeskin site:

First piece I completed with no adult supervision

    Before

    Marked, taped, ready to cut

    After

Pieces trimmed so far....mostly by Tim!

While the guys were here, they noticed my helmet has a weird ridge on it:

Does anyone else have experience with such a thing?

Tim and Thomas are great guys! Definitely listen to them. I wish I had that kind of help when I was building my TK... I had to go it alone. B)

  7. There was a version that had both, the CGI and the original

I have this same package... I bought it around Christmas last year at Target for $10. Seems just fine to me... matches my old original VHS version. ;)

  8. Hey, guys! I've been on this forum for a little while but haven't had much time to be more active on it haha. This will be a little bit of a weird request lol but I have a TK, not the best, and was actually hoping to find other troopers near where I live to see if I could get some help getting my suit up to par. I was planning on using the snap system, and was hoping there is someone that lives near me that could help me get started. First I would need to find the snap set and then try assembling it since I've never done this before. Lmk if your'e interested in helping! Thanks!

Hi Jon, I'm very close to you... Richland Hills. I'd be glad to help you out. Give me a shout and we'll get together. :)

  9. This is my son and I trooping at the 2010 Autism Speaks walk at the Ballpark in Arlington (home of the Texas Rangers MLB team). This was his first troop ever in his Jawa costume we recently threw together. He had a blast with the NTX Star Garrison members and wants to be in 501st/FISD someday like his dad! :D
