Not completely new to armor but.....

Recommended Posts

Hey there all,

I've not been over here as much as I should. I'd like to finish up a set of AM armor for a big event this summer. I know that's a long ways away but I'm really not very good at this stuff so I need the head start.

I had help completing an AP suit a while back but it never really fit me quite right. It looked great from the front but the back had some issues. I found that the FX suit fits me better and through a series of events ended up with an AM kit.

My question is for anybody that has jumped from AP to AM (or vice-versa). My current issue is that I have really skinny calves. (I'm sure I'll run into other issues but that's the one I'm dealing with at the moment). The AP armor fit great for me on the calves / shins but since the AM is a much larger mold it's difficult to trim it down. I have an idea about how to approach it and I've already started trimming it but I was wondering if there's a method someone is aware of that's been 'tried and true' as-it-were.

Should I post some pictures up here of what has happened in this thread or should I start a new build thread? The armor was partially trimmed when I got it so some of the stuff is beyond my control.

I have small calves too. My recommendation is to drill a small hole in the corners or the top part of the shin pieces and cu the lip to the holes. this will allow the shine piece to close more without cracking the piece from excessive bending. additionally I put a small amout of foam in the top part which added comfort for long wearing events. If you have questions PM me and I'll email you some pics on my shine peices.

I had to size down my AM armor - a LOT.

-----------

The shins in particular were cut down quite a bit. I made the front screen accurate and used a 20mm cover strip. My legs are skinny enough that i could cut the back ridge off completely, and use another cover strip. The backs do not line up all once assembled, and required a heat gun to shape them (low heat running the gun over each side of the front cover strip while bending the shins shut in the back).

Keep mind the proportions of your armor though. if you have bigger thighs but skinny calves, don't make the shins skin tight - it's going to look weird. :)

I also think you should start a build thread and post pictures. It's much easier for us to help you this way.
