  1. I have the Extreme Racing undersuit. Its well made. Probably thicker than I anticipated and also sizing was an issue. Had to go larger than expected. Haven't had an issue with the 'seat' section yet but time will tell.

I also have a two-piece black compression suit which is lighter and more breathable.

Will be interesting to see what will prove canon when it comes to the CRL but given the only place you see the undergarment is around the cod and butt I can't imagine it will be a deal breaker.

What is the Extreme Racing suit? Do you have a link to where I can find it?

I wear the same 2 piece undersuit that I wear for my OT TK. No problems with approval, but yeah the other suit is what was used in the movie. I'm considering making a pair of shiny shorts to get the same effect, without wearing the hotter suit on Florida weather.

What is the other suit that you referred to that was used in the movie?

  2. I've been reading the various posts here and on my local garrison's forums as well as The RPF about TK undersuits and was wondering specifically about undersuits for FOTK armor. I read that some people have gone with undersuits different from those used for an original TK and in fact the stormtrooperundersuit.com sells a different one for the FOTK. They say:

Our undersuit is manufactured using a high quality specifically woven cotton/lycra and a latex fabric for the correct look.

The blended cotton fabric reacts to all kinds of different conditions, from excessive heat to extreme cold. In warm weather, perspiration is removed from the skin surface keeping the wearer cool, conversely in cold conditions the natural thermal properties of the fabric allow heat to be retained. Should excess heat occur, the fabric disperses it in the usual manner.

The fabric's are light weight & durable keeping the wearer comfortable at all times, a two way zip for easier toilet trips & a low temp wash non iron care instructions.

However, I read some posts from people on FISD who have purchased this FOTK undersuit from them who said that the "latex fabric" (which is really an oxymoron and is more likely just cotton/lycra covered with black PVC) began peeling off after only wearing the undersuit a few times.

    So, here are my questions...

For 501st approval, is a different TK undersuit required for a FOTK than for an original TK?

For a FOTK, does it matter if the undersuit is a matte black cotton / lycra or a shiny black nylon / lycra? I'm just wondering since the FOTK has the elbow and knee rubber gaskets. Does one look better than the other?

I take it that while it may look good with the FOTK on account of the gaskets, a latex rubber undersuit is not recommended since those tend to enhance whatever the surrounding temperature is so unless you are inside in a climate controlled 72 degrees, you are either going to be boiling or freezing. Has anyone tried one of these and if so am I correct?

Two piece vs. one-piece with two-way zip? If one-piece, attached feet or ankle length (and if ankle, what do you do for socks)?

    Thanks!

  3. Welcome to FISD, and welcome to Garrison Tyranus. :)

Welcome Jim!  Always good to see new TK's coming to Garrison Tyranus!  Looking forward to trooping with you.

Thanks to both of you! It looks like Virginia is a hotbed of Imperial activity from what I've learned recently. It turns out that I don't live that far from the XO for the garrison and I was invited to stop by last week's armor party, but Saturdays in the summer are when our kids have their swim meets so by the time the meet finished and we had lunch it was nearly over. I'm hoping to make the next one, though (and my 13-year old daughter even wants to come along since she's into Star Wars and costuming -- we're looking into the Galactic Academy for her.) Two of my friends who are neighbors of ours might also be looking at getting involved in the 501st, so I'll try to pull them in with me.

I look forward to getting to know you and the rest of the garrison.

  4. What an incredible amount of information here. I just joined these forums yesterday upon the recommendation of the local 501st garrison (I ordered a First Order Stormtrooper helmet from ANOVOS at Disney's Hollywood Studios earlier this month and now I'm looking at getting armor to complete the uniform and apply for membership in the 501st.) It took me a few hours to read through all 47 pages, but all the questions I would have had were answered. Thanks to everyone for not only creating the initial page back in 2010, but keeping it up to date as well as responding to all the questions in these forums.

Now off to check out the First Order Stormtroopers Resources thread!

  5. Hi, my name is Jim. I'm not new to Star Wars (saw it in '77 as an 8-year old and now my 6-year old son has all my original Kenner toys), but I'm new to this side of the fandom.

As a kid, I remember being on vacation and seeing a store in Cape May, NJ around 1979-81 that was selling Stormtrooper and Darth Vader helmets as well as a C-3PO full-head mask (and in '80 or '81 they added a Boba Fett one after TESB came out.) These were actually really high quality and looked like ones from the movies. I really wanted that Stormtrooper helmet, but it was $40 and back then that would be about equal to what ANOVOS is charging today when adjusted for inflation. Needless to say, my parents said, "No" and that was the end of it. Well, except for the time as a kid I made a Stormtrooper Halloween costume using paper / cardstock to create the armor, a black magic marker for details, and a cheap plastic Stormtrooper mask over a knock-off Stormtrooper wannabe helmet.

Fast forward to this past May when I was on another trip to Cape May, probably my first since then, and I told my wife about that store I had seen all those years ago and the cool stuff they had. Needless to say, it was no longer around (or at least we couldn't find it and even if we did they wouldn't have had those for $40.)

Then a few weeks ago, I was at Disney World with my family and when we were in the Star Wars Launch Bay at Hollywood Studios I saw they were selling the ANOVOS Stormtrooper helmets (both OT and TFA). My wife knew that I had wanted one since I was a kid from the story I had told her just over a month earlier. She told me to go ahead and get it and that would be her present to me for our 15th wedding anniversary. I thought for sure i was going to go with the OT helmet, but when they let me look at both of them out of the case, I wound up surprising myself and went with the newer TFA one.

So, the downside is the stated delivery time for my First Order Stormtrooper helmet is 6-10 weeks (which is now 4-8 by my calculations and yes, I now know you can order the ANOVOS helmets on Amazon and get them in 2 days). The upside is now I've decided to go beyond just owning the helmet and go for the full armor set so I can join the 501st. Now I just have to figure out my best option for getting the armor...

I've been in touch with some of the people from the local 501st here -- Garrison Tyranus -- and they steered me in the direction of this forum as well as inviting me to drop by an armor party (I couldn't make last weekend's, but I hope to make their next one). I've just begun reading reviews and researching the various sources for armor.

Feel free to drop me a line with any advice or tips.

    -- Jim
