  1. I am glad the Legion does it's best to spread care, love, and kindness to those who are struggling, but I'm curious as to why it's taking part in sexual rallies?

Don't get me wrong, I just want to remind everyone what the Legion is really for. It was started as a means to entertain kids, those who are hurting in hospitals, who are dealing with physical hurts and suffering. I don't speak in objection to one kind of sexual rally, but any. I don't want to see the name of the organisation used in a way it wasn't intended for originally, which as stated, was for kids. I hope Teresa that you understand my point. The Legion is a gift, a gift for all. Why do we have to use it for sexuality topics? I'm not meaning just one person's sexuality, but everyone's. So I'm not picking at any group here, just wondering why we are using this family orientated organisation in our rallies?

Pride at its very core is about support. It is about representation and a physical vocalization of said support. There are children in this world who are gay or trans and when they see their favorite characters marching alongside them and for them, that must be unspeakably uplifting for them.

You talk about this organization being started as a support for sick kids and as entertainment. I think it might be our duty to take it beyond that and use these costumes as a way to stand up against hate and prejudice. You don't have to march in the parade if you feel that's what you have to do. But to say none of us can and that we are wrong to want to do good with something we love and that we've been given permission as a Legion to do? That's sort of defeating the purpose of the group as a whole.

    Sorry. I don't buy it.

  2. Okay so I just got done trooping for the first times this week and am on the hunt for a voice changer that will make me sound more like Phasma.

I've found a few threads for the Kylo helmets but haven't seen anything about voice changers for Phasma.

Does anyone have any advice on what I could do?

I cannot do the accent because of my own actual accent. Even if it was something that made me sound a bit more tinny or deepened my actual voice, that'd be great.

  3. Beautiful kit!!  I admire anyone up to tackling a Phasma build.  I hear it's one heck of a chore and just the paint job alone is grueling.  Great job!  :jc_doublethumbup:

    Thank you!

She's definitely been an endeavor. There's been so many times where I've cursed myself out for not starting with something simpler. Oh well. She's fun to wear and I got so many hugs from little kids this weekend so that makes me feel good about this whole monster of a project.

  4. I lost track of how much time it took to paint the whole thing, but a whole lot more than 40. Though for the white, it was a lot of priming, then color coating, with a clear coat follow up and paint sealant. Not airbrushed but sprayed in the garage setup as a cleanroom. Start to finish that was about a two month ordeal for me, and I don't think I'd repeat that. I ended up stripping off the clear coat enamel as it was problematic under stress so just have a final color top coat.... thankfully that means I can recoat the whole set in one day now for touch ups or refurbishment. Like you, as you wear and tear the armor you'll notice some nicks on the paint layers where two pieces meet and rub under movement.

Anyway, great job and good luck getting it wrapped up for Rogue One!

Oh man-with all of the other painting? It took a lot more than 40 hours. I actually used some of my vacation time in September just so I could get the bulk of the priming done.

I've been clocking the hours and I have them written somewhere in my notebook...Last time I made a point of counting, I think I was up to 200 hours on this costume entirely. Hahah

It's got to be worth it, right?! Maybe...

  5. Looking very nice!! If I could convince my wife to wear a suit of armor I'd build her one of these sets in a heartbeat, instead she's opted to go the sith route wearing robes and a mask. Anyway, as far as the painting, is this spray based? Either way, serious kudos to painting a whole set of armor, I know how painful and tedious that is (I painted my whole TK to give it a showroom look). Good luck getting it all wrapped up!

If you'd told me a year ago I would be doing an entire armor like this I would have choked from laughing so hard. I love Phasma so much though, I knew the first time I saw her I was going to do this costume one way or another.

And yeah, this is entirely airbrushed. It took me about 40 hours to get it chromed. It was unbelievably tedious. But I just put in my headphones and turned on the Ahsoka audio book and plugged away hahaha.

My hope is to get this approved in time for Rogue One.

  6. So I debuted my Captain Phasma this weekend.

She's not quite finished-I have to add all of the detail work, finish the fingers and boot plates and tweak the rigging. I also had to do some major work on the thighs and cod piece-the bite was pretty bad and the paint got destroyed on the latter piece. I took about 2 inches out of the thighs and a quarter inch out of the cod yesterday and it fits a lot better. Will start the touch up paint this week.

She was really successful with our local kids at the Halloween street festival I went to on Friday. I was also invited to a comic con by the local 501st Garrison-Northern Darkness. It was a lot of fun and a huge honor.

I'm really proud of this costume-I've been working on it since April and it's been a great learning process.

This is a Jimmi kit, painted with Alclad Chrome. Cape by Jessica Bowyer.

  7. Awesome! She was working on mine last week so hopefully soon thatll be here. Got the rubberized version too.

And its not necesarrily wary of the tool itself, ive sanded down car parts and stuff. But its the fiberglass. Dont have any experience with it and ibheard from someone you want to be super carefull with the front sanding and exposing the fibers. But seems like everyone on this thread says do it lol. So ill end up getting out the palm sander.

What did you do with the little dimples that were around the armor and helmet? Sand it down to smooth or put in a bondo/filler?

Yeah sand it as smooth as you can get it, filler primer, sand some more, fill any dings and pits that you can't smooth out with wet sand with bondo glazing putty, sand, plain primer, sand, filler primer, etc. etc. Hahaha it was a whole thing. The armor I filled with a mix of Apoxie Sculpt, Bondo Filler, Flex Filler, Worbla. It just kind of depended on what piece it was and how bad the damage was.

  8. Glad to "meet" you to lol. And ya, ive talked to jessica a little. Shes actually doing my cape. Cause theres no way in heck thay i can sew lol. Im only a little cautious with palm sanding cause I'm afraid of doing too much. But seems like yours has been going great!

I'm getting my cape from Jessica this week! So stoked!

I'm a decent seamstress but there's no way I'd be able to knock that cape out on my own. It's a beast. And hers look amazing so I didn't have any problem getting one.

If you're nervous about the power tools, maybe give it a whirl on the inside of say, the back or chest piece? That's what I did, so I could get used to how it felt and how it moved.

  9. Ya Molly I'm part of that group. Calvin Mondragon. And I thought about the hand sander, I have a few. But for me at the moment I really like being able to just hand sand. I get a better feel with armor and with what I'm doing. But phase will probably pass lol. Jim's kit is absolutely amazing and so easy to work with. Very happy with it so far

    Awesome! Glad to meet ya!

And yeah, Vince is right. Hand sanding gets old fast. Especially on the big pieces. Good lord. Hahaha

If you can, look up Jessica Bowyer-she's got Jim's Phasma and it's been metalized. It's amazing and she's still trimming and fixing it every time she wears it hahaha.

  10. I've got Jim's Phasma. I'm painting it so not sure about the metalizing. BUT word of caution. The kit is going to need a lot of prep-I've been working on it since July and just got done painting the black undercoat and there's a couple pieces where I can see where I didn't do a good enough job on them. I'd invest in a good electric palm sander. It'll save your hands and save you on time. I've seen a few vacuum metalized kits-not many. Most people don't have the budget for that so paint it is! Which has its own troubles. Are you on Facebook? If so, check out the Captain Phasma Costumers build page and Jim's build page. Great groups of people who can help and there's a few of the metalized kits in the Phasma page.

  11. I've got Jim's Phasma and I've done a mix of Bondo, Apoxie Sculpt and Poly-Flex (a flexible filler, similar to bondo). Apoxie is good for filling in the mirrored bits of the armor (forearm clip locations etc.). Bondo is good for the usual filling stuff. I haven't heard of sludge before tonight so that's cool! Good luck! If you're on facebook, look up his build page. It helps and it's a great group of people who know the kit's quirks and how to work with them.

  12. I am currently working on Jimmi's Phasma kit. Officially at the point where I need to figure out the soft parts-a.k.a. belts/rigging/gloves/boots/gaskets.

Most of that I have figured out so I'm not too worried (yet).

Thing that I kind of want to get figured out soon are her gloves.

Jim's kit comes with the awesomely obnoxious C-3PO style finger armor and hand plate. Which is great. It's super flexible and soft and fits my really long yet sausage like fingers perfectly.

I just need to figure out what kind of gloves I need. And how to attach the armor to the gloves. I need something semi permanent so I don't lose the armor at cons/troops. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  13. Welcome! I'm secretly hoping that your user name is a reference to Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, but that's just me.

There's a lot of reading to do on First Order Stormtrooper building, where most of the info will be relevant to a Phasma build. I recommend reading all of ukswrath's build thread! Super informative. It's quite complex and having read it before doing an ANH Stormtrooper and after, I understood way more (except for his suspension/harness system - that still confuses me)!

It is a reference to Captain Marvel! Carol is my queen haha. I don't know how to link pictures to my cosplay in here! Poo.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Whitearmor stopped alerting me to messages for some reason...
