  1. So where do you suppose the parts came from? That's probably the main reason I asked in the first place (probably should have metioned that). Since I'm still fairly new to all of this I'm trying to figure out where stuff comes from just on how it looks like the rest of you seem to be able to do. Like, how do you differentiate on appearance FX from ATA, or painted ATA from TM or AP?

  2. Honestly I would avoid that. .60 gauge styrene is quite thin and its lack of rubber content will probably make it more likely to break. That coupled with the time of year means you'll be paying an awful lot for it. The seller also has low feedback so that would be 3 alarm bells ringing for me. If I were you I would be looking here for better quality armour.

Thanks for the advice, didn't understand the quality of thickness if styrene.

  3. Hey I just don't want to see you get something you will regret. :duim:

As for Nathan, Old Runnriottt is stationed over there. He maybe working on military time  Just wait a few days, if you have not heard back from him, just shoot him another PM.

As for the Japanese Garrison, don't know  Are you posting on their forum, and not getting a response???

I'm still waiting to be approved for membership. It's been quite some time now.

  4. It looks to be FX or AFX, or a recast of an FX or AFX... <_<

From the pic, it doesn't look like it has the drop boxes and the scope on the blaster looks totally wrong.

At this point it still has roughly six hours until the end of the auction and it is over $500+ S&H at this point. For that kind of money, you could get an ATA kit (which is more accurate)and you won't be putting money into something you will regret, by having to put money into replacing or modifying pre-existing stuff.

You said in your greetings from Japan: "I'm just working on a budget of about $700 including shipping costs right now". ATA is going to be well in your budget and have some coins left over. You can put those coins towards the right blaster, an unused undersuit, holster, boots, belt, etc. If you don't have all the money for everything, do like everyone else, buy a little as you go along.

You said when you introduced yourself that you wanted to learn the basic skills. I would suggest getting a new kit and not buying someones hand me downs, especially at a premium price.

Nathan (Runnriottt) said if you need help, just contact him. Since you are over on the Japanese Garrison's forum, there should be a lot of people there that will help you with your build. But if you are just wanting something to wear for Halloween, then go for it.

But if you are serious about having a nice TK suit and want ot be a part of the 501st, then I would say, stay away from Ebay when it comes to your armor needs, because you will only regret it.

    :):salute:

Thanks for the advice. I'll hold for something better. All a learning experience I suppose.

I really appreciate the feedback, saves me from making poor decisions.

PS- Messaged Nathan, still hearing nothing from the Japanese Garrison. Does anybody know what's going on with them?

  5. That looks very, very bad IMHO. Poorly strapped and worn, and you get a $hitty blaster with it. And why does he offer it as being "original", where our armor in general is clearly always a reproduction? He's trying to imply a prop, which is hilarious for an FX type armor...

Stay away from that, man. There is way better armor to be had than this.

Could it be that it looks bad just because it's quite a bit too small for him? I weigh about 60lbs less and am an inch shorter, so I was wondering if with a little work if might look respectable on me.

  6. Hey hey man! Shoot me a PM if you need anything. Ill look into why you have not been approved on the boards. I am the GMl over here and think its cool that you are looking to join man!

What was the screen name you chose on the boards?

We are going through some changes in the JG so bear with us...

It's the same screen name as here, jfries. I'm really glad to see there's such a good presence here in Japan.

  7. Sorry, FX is no longer made...Pretty much the only way FX kits are found new now, is in inferior recast on ebay, and you don't want to do that. AM (Armor Master) also known as Tupperware, has replaced FX.

AM is going to be for larger size people, and may not be right for you.

Depending on your size (height/weight) you might want to look into the more accurate armor kits, like TM, ATA, TE2, Cap-W, AP, that are made for average size people.

If you look at the link I posted above, "Getting Started" you will find very valuable info there. ;)

If you are registered with the Japanese Garrisons' forum, then you are good for now. Just see when their next troop is and ask if you can help them out. With events, they are always looking for handlers. You can get to know some of the Garrison members, and see their costumes and ask for help with your costume, as well. :duim: Once you get your costume together, then you put in for your 501st status. :salute:

So pull up a chair, and read, read, read... 'cause this is where the fun begins.....

I've been pretty much looking for second-hand FX armor to get a feel for the craft. I had noticed quite few people getting rid of their old FX armor at decent prices and just figured that'd be a good way to go for starters. I was really digging the ATA sets I've been seeing, and goodness knows that I'd love to be able to drop $1200 on some nice armor, I'm just working on a budget of about $700 including shipping costs right now. So I'm a little hamstringed, I think. As for fit, I'm 6'1" and 180lbs, so I'm really not sure if that ranks as average. Advice?

I'm still waiting for forum approval from the Japanese Garrison. They seem to be taking their time.

  8.

Don't forget to join you local 501st. Here is the link to the Japanese Garrison:http://www.501st.jp/

Your local Garrison will be able to give you advice, hands on help and you will also get to see the armor up close, as well.

Don't I have to already have my armor in order to join the 501st? I did already apply to join the forums for the Japanese Garrison, and was pleasantly surprised that it has both Japanese and English options.

I really appreciate the advice. I very nearly fell for the eBay thing, but my instincts led me to do some heavy research and the led me here. Now if I can just find some FX armor to start with, maybe I can learn the hands-on basics.

  9. Hi everyone, my name's Josh and I'm an English teahcer in Japan. I've been a pretty big SW fan since I was young and so is my little brother. So I figured getting into the armor game would be a good bit of fun. Like many of the other new guys I'm trying aquire/build my first set of armor, so please be gentle with me with what may at times seem like utterly silly or nonsensical questions. Cheers.
