Idealized Stormtrooper Helmet Build

Recommended Posts

Salutations!

New guy here...I was a huge Star Wars collector as a kid...then adulthood got in the way. Recently dug out all my old swag and got to thinking I'd like to really get a few really nice props. Then I got to thinking, why not build some really nice props? I thought I'd make as accurate a replica of an idealized helmet as I could...bonus points for functionality. Finally, I got to thinking, who knows more about Stormtroopers than the 501st?

So a few questions if I might. Please approach these with an in-universe thought process.

First...the "vents". We know in almost all the movies, these were just painted on for looks. However, in Rogue One, it appears they actually cut out the vents. I'm assuming this was for the actors' comfort versus any authenticity, however canonically I think it's safe to say the vents actually existed and weren't just for looks. Can anyone tell me the source of this photo? And are there any accurate helmets being sold with pre-cut vents? I figure it would be a lot easier, and less risky, than cutting them out myself from an RS Props stunt kit

Next question...can somebody ID the source of the blueprint overlapped posted below? I'd post it separately, but it seems I can't post more than 512k in photos TOTAL (new guy limitations, maybe?). Notice that the earpieces vary from the setup commonly accepted above. And honestly, it kind of makes more sense that the ear pieces would run to the side modules instead of the voice and ventilation pieces. Just trying to determine which would be more canonically correct

Hello and welcome to the forum

Many of us use an online fee image host for photos, upload then copy the "direct link" straight into your post, here is a tutorial.

The images you have are from the visual dictionaries, various issues, well before Rogue One was ever envisioned, it's an artists impression of the inside of the helmet not true to screen accuracy, we have a member who created 3d files for those pieces. The blueprint is another artists impression so both could be very different.

Here are a few other versions of that particular image.

The versions of vents cut out would only be for Rogue One, Mandalorian, Solo Stormtroopers, all others (RS included) use decals/stickers. You can add what ever you want (space permitted) inside the helmets, some use hearing assist, wifi/bluetooth mic, fans and so on as long as it doesn't change the outside appearance.

If you head over to the RPF you will find a lot of "reveal" helmet versions there

Here is another

Thanks. A lot of great info there

I'm familiar with photohosting, but a lot of forums I frequent don't allow it, because it's terrible for archiving when the member deletes their hosting account. If it's allowed here I'll have to use it again.

Some very different interpretations there...I already downloaded the 3D print files, as I have a resin printer, and have been prepping them to print to play around with until I get around to finding a helmet

What is a "reveal"? Just showing off the inside of the helmets?

Sounds like you want a Rogue One/New Era style helmet (current options: print Nico Henderson's files, convert a Hasbro Black Series, get a fiberglass one from Jimmiroquai, or a slush cast resin one from 850 Armor Works or Head Shot Props, though the last has been having delivery issues) as they are more symmetrical and idealized, and a White Shadow helmet liner or similar. An OT style helmet wouldn't look right for what you're trying to do, I don't think.

Some names and words up there I haven't stumbled upon before...I have have to look into them. For my build, yes, I think you might be right. And I might just get an OT helmet for display and not mess with it

Thanks for the info...I have some more research to do!

Added additional links to make it a little easier on you, but yup - RESEARCH is key to finding what will make you happiest with your purchase!

OT also look cool with White Shadow liners, but I don't think I'd try to cut the tube vent stripes out of an ABS OT helmet is mostly what I meant. Hope that helped though!

I just shot a PM to Jimmiroquai, but I see he hasn't been on the forum in awhile.

I have been printing the internals just to see how they come together, and notice there are a few rather bold and distinct differences from the ones in the book. I have been slowly teaching myself Blender, so I might try tweaking the files myself

Thanks for all your help!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I am designing and printing a helmet interior kit based off your first photo with the black background. Not the blueprint version.

You can see my progress in the 3D printer forums:
