Hello from Tennessee

Hello all!! I’m currently in progress of assembling my ESB Vader over on the SLD, but I figured I had better have a back up costume for the 8-9 months of Tennessee heat. Two layers of wool and leather could get pretty warm...

All that to say, I’m here to read up on some WIP threads and get a feel for how to build a TK. I’d really like to do a Rogue One TK when the time comes and from what I’ve seen from lurking, I think I’d like to go with an 850 Armor Works kit, or maybe ANH Kit from RSpropmasters. Thanks for having me!!

Welcome to the FISD!  Here are some links to get started:

https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/38-getting-started-read-this-first/

For the Rogue One TK

https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/196-rogue-one-build-threads/

For the ANH TK

https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/80-anh-build-threads/

If you are set on a RO TK, there are not too many choices out there.  There are some 850 builds posted in the rogue one section - so you can see what you think of it.

If you are interested in doing a original trilogy TK, then RS is an excellent choice.  There are also other vendors out there that offer very good kits as well.

Good luck!

Hi Jacob and welcome aboard future Trooper!

Have a read in the “Getting Started-Read this First” section, as there is some really good info in there for new members.

Then, have a read in “Costuming and Builds” section to discover other troopers who are building (or have built) the same armor as you! Really good tips, examples, pictures, previously answered questions, and successes here.

In addition to looking at all the various build threads, I highly recommend checking out the “Advanced Tactics” section where you can see examples of those who have taken their armor to the next levels of screen accuracy (EIB and Centurion).  I’d recommend that you aim to build to one of the certification levels, as TK’s look their best at these levels. It's really not hard to acquire EIB or Centurion, and it’s best to do during your build rather that after.

If, and when, you’re looking for other bits –and-pieces, accessories, boots, blasters, electronics, etc., be sure to check out the “Imperial Commissary/PX” section for items for sale, project runs, and for other stuff that most of the troopers use.

Also, keep in contact with your local Garrison. They’ll help guide you through the process of becoming a member of the 501st, and may have local Armor Parties in the works where you can get hands-on build advice and guidance, not to mention meet members of your future Garrison.

So, start a build thread here on FISD; post lots of pictures and questions. We are all here to help you out and to make sure you look your best, and represent the 501st as best as possible.

All the best on your TK journey! :dancing-trooper:

Thank you all for the kind and helpful words...I haven’t started a WIP thread yet because well...I’ve not started any work yet!! But in my research I’ve definitely narrowed down my project to an 850 Armor Works R1 TK. I’ve been in contact with them and they claim the kit is made for bigger dudes such as myself (around 6’3”, 250 lbs) and it seems like a great deal. My problem here is that I can’t find a bucket suitable for a R1 TK.

Two questions to pose here.

1. Is modifying the Black Series trooper helmet still a viable option?
2. I’ve found an Etsy shop called headshotprops, link below, and I feel like this is the easier route but, how would one go about filing out the lines on the traps and tears? Since they’re not already part of the mold, I feel it’s gonna be a complicated process, or maybe I’m making this harder than it needs to be.

Any help is appreciated!!

So it does seem the Black Series helmet is still acceptable if modded correctly. Reason I ask about that specifically is because on the CRL it states:

“Many commercially available helmets or those considered disproportionate in size or shape are ineligible.”

I assumed this meant the Black Series but I could’ve been mistaken. I feel like that may be the easier way to go since most of the recessed edges are already started, you basically just have to cut them out, maneuver some pieces around and fill in some holes. Thanks, this’ll come in handy when I begin!!

Ultimately the decision will be up to your GML (garrison membership liaison) who makes judgement on costume approvals.

There have been some really nice detailed build threads on converting the Black Series helmet but unfortunately many are now missing their photos, but the text is still there with info of what has been modified:

https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/47820-black-series-mod/

https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/46370-black-series-helmet-mod/

Have a look through the R1 reference gallery for comparisons between the Black Series helmet and those used on set here

This will be super helpful. I’ve found a couple of those threads already but the ones with the pictures in tact had escaped me. Thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

Greetings Jacob! I know you've already been here for about a month, but I thought I'd reach out to say hi and also ask you where in Tennessee you are located. I am technically right across the state line from Chattanooga, in Georgia, but once my TK build is finished I suspect I will do a lot of trooping with the Midsouth (TN) garrison, and more specifically the Mos Nooga Squad. Depending on where you are, perhaps we'll meet someday!

Hello!! Chattanooga is a few hours out from me. I live up in the eastern most corner of TN near Bristol, but if you’re ever up my way perhaps we will meet one day. It’s looking like I’ll actually join up with Garrison Tyrannus in VA, the group of guys I’ve met up here are two members short of starting a new squad. If I can finish up my Vader fast enough I may get to be a founding member!!
