sonfield Posted May 17, 2018 Report Share Posted May 17, 2018 Ok, Well we are done, but wanted to post to help anyone else and be able to answer questions. We did a Jimi kit, and painted with spaz stix. We had to size down tremendously as my wife is 5'6" 120lbs. We cut the biceps and thighs in the rear, fit to body, then used a Dremel to cut again for a matched seam. We then used ABS strips inside secured with CA glue, and bondo'd the seams. Forearms we cut and sized with the same method, 2 strips of ABS per. We also trimmed the chest piece from the top and bottom to look more feminine. Pictures will show how the fitting came together over the course of 3 attempts and adjustments. We had Geeky Pink Gaskets, Belts from Belts of the first order, undersuits from stormtrooper undersuits. The cape is from the lovely Jessica. Holsters from Justin Lee. We did a simultaneous build.. FOTK for me and Phasma for the wife. Please ask any and all questions. We could not have finished without the help of this group and the facebook group. I have some questions, hope you don't mind, as I'm terribly close to pulling the trigger on acquiring a Captain Phasma kit from Jimi... Well, the helmet at least, lol. As I've never done this before, I'm doing baby steps. If I can handle the helmet and it comes out great, then I'll acquire the armor next. What is the quality of the kit like? I understand it's a type of flexible fiberglass. Concerning the overall process, I assume that once the parts are accounted for (nothing missing, etc.) you try a test fit to gauge what needs to be modified (I'm even shorter than your wife at 5'3" so I'm already assuming I'll have to do some heavy modifying of the armor itself) and then get to work trimming and the like? In regards to the chrome, how durable is the Spaz-tix compared to something like Alclad or even a chrome wrap? Regarding the hand/finger armor, does it -- especially the C3PO style fingers (which were changed in TLJ to be more like medieval style fingers) -- hamper the ability to hold/grip things? Is it heavier, yes, is it more prone to slight cracks, maybe, maybe not. But, the ease of working with it once you get used to it is second to none. I found that it was easier to cut and sand as you are not fighting it melting.. I also think it is more comfortable which trades off for the weight and more easy to repair. There are no pinches anywhere and I love how flexible it is. SOmeone said that it becomes more wearable with time as your body heat helps to mold it a little. I think that is true. Plus the details are crazy good. Yes we knew we would have to trim... and remove seams..... and paint.. All things we have never done before. We started cutting right away and it was so much easier than we thought. Cut about 3/4 inch abs strips to close the seams from behind then bondo'd over. Really easy. Cutting the height of thigh and leg armor was equally as easy. Depending on your build (measurements) you should not have an issue finding 3 more inches. My wife has super skinny arms, we may have pushed the limit on how small the biceps could go. Assuming your arms are more proportional, should be ok... We fit arms and legs first. THen we did the ab armor. Used hot water to get it super bendy then taped off and cut up the middle in the back. Naomi has a fairly large chest and the ab plate flexed around there well. What I was super nervous about was cutting the chest. Cut some from the top and bottom and it was actually very easy with the dremel cutting wheel.. Just draw good lines and it cuts very easily. Look at the shots of fitting 1 and 2 for the before and after. I wanted her phasma to have a more feminine line to it. I think it helped. Spaz and Allclad, relatively the same beast. Spaz half as expensive and easy to get on amazon prime, so I tried it first. Loved the result, stuck with it. I prefer the "dirty" phasma look over the pure mirror, so I love the results. If you want mirror, and have the budget, go with VM or spectrachrome. I hate the fingers! We are looking to get smaller fingers from someone.. Naomi has small hands. How did you fasten the chest plate to the yoke? And didyou use velcro to fasten the bottom of the chest plate to the bottom of the back? Chest plate is velcro on both sides under arm and a snap on a piece of webbing fabric that is snapped between both sides of the yoke. I will take a pic tonight. Did not re size shoulders, but want to later remember, one lies under the cape. Compound you have to get off (buffed to shine) before chroming. But yes, chrome is last.
