Tom's LPA NN-14 Blaster Build (Rey's Blaster)

Recommended Posts

Greetings all! I know this isn't exactly a stormtrooper blaster, but it's still a nice looking blaster, so I thought it would be ok to share the build?

Started off by drawing it up on Autodesk... took a while as I had to learn how to use the program first lol

Gave everything a coat of filler primer, then started sanding out those horrible 3d print lines you get. Used an a mix of different grits, mostly 160 (I think) then 2000 to smooth it up.

Just done another coat of the filler primer today, and am sanding everything again. So much sanding!! fa1997009ca7618d043946e0ee98eaaa.jpg

Bit more done today: after a coat of regular primer, I've set sanded everything to get it silky smooth

As my sister is gonna cosplay Rey, I'm gonna make 2 blasters so we have one each :) So, I'm gonna make some molds and cast a couple in resin. Never done this before so should be fun!162aa3526756154ea9cfc9863d2de6da.jpg182a186b8b449348d7ec8a32af756d4f.jpg0dc83d2cc03dab55aa7e437f8ec9bb51.jpg72f44b2791b8a6becb2cc39a87890ce6.jpg

Made the all the containers for the one part molds today. The main body, hammer, and part that sits down from the barrel I'm gonna do in 2 part molds tomorrow, as they're an awkward shape.

PunishedProps have some great videos and resources for Reys blaster, there s a free vector diagram which I used to help on the 3d drawing (though I've edited the grips a little on mine so they're closer to reference pics), so credit owed to punished props there! They also have vids on one and two part molds, they really inspired me to try this route, so worth of watch if anyone's interested..

Finished off the 2 part molds today, filled in around the edges with non drying clay. Modelling tools came in handy!

Poured out some of the silicon molds too, though I've calculated that I need more silicon haha. Will have to wait to do the rest!eecfc43a664f0a36a088803f34743a62.jpg67c9da575f2c64f6f3d285cdae49a90c.jpg39b9043c904fd9c57d8bf4ad576cbab1.jpgccee7ea06086759e27619107096178aa.jpg6db106010496f7dd1111fc92d825a332.jpg

First molds are done, pretty happy with the results! Looks a little rough around the edges as some of the silicon seeped under the master (even though it was glued down). I'm surprised it made into such small spaces actually. Shouldn't be any problem though if the right amount of resin is used.

Now just to wait for more silicone..26e8d34260175b1018f69375e5b6ee43.jpg

Alright. Been a while since the last post, life and all that, but making some more progress here.

Most of the resin parts are all cast and ready to go. Had to fill in the odd gap with some putty, but overall they came out pretty nicely.

Have drilled out a few holes, some for the real screws to go in, other to attach the barrel and s-part (think that's what it's called).

Once the putty is dry, there's a little more sanding to do then onto the painting, woop!0b024a572b91a647ee09c2e3c05f8e2f.jpg5150b8ea970744fac3d3adf5ea1386f8.jpg5cb2ee7c6670ec15f435c29f8e315051.jpg

Paint work coming along nicely! In places anyway haha.

Gloss black on the grips, real screws fitted. Gloss aluminium on the rest. For some reason I got a few little bubbles on the main blaster body when I painted it. Not quite sure why this happened, was nice and smooth beforehand. Perhaps I held the can too close. Anyway, another blast of sanding and repaint and it's looking better. Any thing left over will hopefully add to the weathered effect.

Assembly soon!c01ce59da444520cdecdcf72849b826a.jpg1a6485da39dcd949f3633c138d1dd5b8.jpgb06bd4592725955f140a0f5316001f45.jpg39d1d702e7d1e2d288b5481d6ce549a5.jpg

It's been a while since the last update, but the the first one is finally done!

Biggest setback was the metallic paint. I used gloss aluminium, which has a lovely shine to it like in the previous photos, but has 2 issues: first, it rubs off easily and dulls. Second, protecting it with clear coat dulls it too (gloss clear or even aryclic gloss clear). I've sampled the aluminium gloss enamel spray, however, while it doesn't rub off, it seems to be quite dull anyway, and I'm yet to test that with the clear coat. Interestingly, metallic brushed nickel doesn't rub off, and doesn't dull under a clear coat (only issue being the slight gold hue to it). Currently waiting for a metallic silver to test. All these are Plasti-Kote paints by the way

In the end I stuck with the gloss alu and the clear coat as it was going to be weathered anyway.

For weathering I've used a Tamiya weathering set for the scorched muzzle, and a mix of brown and black oil paint for the grubby oil effect :)

Onto the next one!5aea12158410660b7be707a95679bb5b.jpgeca9ae78105cb4fe0fface3f14f4198f.jpg27ed597e90bf710c274dc7a69f2c2b91.jpg9247b999c9740ee760b8fd689dde8633.jpg850d31162d9ebae05eda5f99ca71f25a.jpg5ae74db061b1b8f896c8d24d2c656777.jpg1ee74ae10aebef8fb8571a1454b75475.jpgef181cb480e4d4c8ddc3d068927d0e33.jpg73c2c095f604952ba380c7a2dd793375.jpg
