SithSeth Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 (edited) Hello everyone, I've browsed this and a few other forums for a long time and I finally joined a few months ago and purchased my first armor kit! I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing from reading tons of other people's armor build threads. I've got 90% of the kit trimmed out, I started assembling some of the helmet and have the shoulder bells and biceps completely done. I am doing "cover strips on the inside first then on the outside for strength. So far everything is going really good but I think I may have made a dumb mistake on the first forearm piece I finished. The problem is that I have 2XL hands and fairly large forearms, I ended up having to trim mine less then it seems most people do which left me with larger areas for the cover strips to have to hide. After glueing the first one together I realized I could have just left the bottom seam on the forearm wider and done the top one smaller so the 15mm cover strips look better I know it's kind of hard to describe so here's a pic, please let me know if I am okay with the forearms like this or if I should do the other one different and order two new forearm pieces. troopermaster Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 If I was building this kit, I would make both the joining strips the same width. I personally do not like to see a thin strip on a wide joining edge like you have done it. When I build kits for people who are larger than the screen used armour, I simply make wider strips to accommodate them - so if you need to use a 20 or 25mm wide joining strip on the arms, so be it. I try to do the same for the legs but the thighs usually require a wedge shaped strip. I much prefer this than going through the horrible mess of shimming and blending with ABS paste, and it gives a much neater finish, too. Another thing is that there really is no need for a reinforcing strip on the inside. I know a lot of people like to do this for some reason, but they really are not necessary. And finally, just an FYI to everyone: cover strips go on the outside, hence 'cover' meaning to go on or over. Inner strips should be referred to as reinforcing strips. That's a little pet hate that I wanted to get off my chest 1 Quote
Pretzel Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 (edited) I would have to agree with Paul, You will need wider cover strips to cover up the 2 joining edges. the 15mm, 20mm and 25mm is more of a guide, and is the preferred width for cover strips, but if you need larger strips to cover the joining edges, so be it. SithSeth Posted January 18, 2017 Author Report Posted January 18, 2017 Thanks guys I appreciate the help! Quote
SithSeth Posted January 18, 2017 Author Report Posted January 18, 2017 I know that the reinforcing strips aren't necessary but it will make the joint a lot stronger and I won't have to worry about the glue failing....maybe it's OCD on my part but it just seems like the best way to do it Quote
