Thank you so much. Initially I was just going to build it "as is" but the more I've progressed, the more I wanted to test how accurate I could get it. I've had to put my armour build on hold whilst I focus on this.

So the last couple of days have been working on the folding stock. I'm pretty confident that I can make it functional ( but time will tell!)

First off was the folding stock pivot. I sanded down the resin cast rivets. I could not fin anything with the correct sized head. So I decided to factor them myself. The rivets had the same size head as some drawing pins, so these would be my template. I got to work with some epoxy putty, ca glue, sompe plastic tubing, and the said pins.

83da9fffb66100a4a18d1ccfbcc790e9.jpg

Ok, so now we have the pivot that now moves. Im happy so far, as the rear of the stock clips nicely into the correct place on the end cap.

07651501df826e2d5e539c38305a0e91.jpg

Next up was the extension rod, which would also house the mechanism for the catch.

I ripped apart a fair few pens and constructed a working catch. Which means that as soon as you fold the handle down the internal mechanism will release the catch and unlock the stock form the main body.

427e8a4429791926cecc7f73ac9ebb68.jpg

Some shots of where I'm upto. Next job will be to carve out the front end of the handle and build the lever mechanism.

A little more progress today.

The handle has been hollowed out and filler applied, which I will clean up tomorrow.

I also drilled out the muzzle ready for the hex bolts, but got carried away so had to apply some filler

Mag being prepped for fitting

And there is now a functional (and working ) catch on the stock

Tommorrow will be spent sanding and then I attempt the final part of the working folding stock

Can't wait to see that folding stock in action... :D

My biggest challenge is going to be factoring the handle hinge with integrated stock release. I'm thinking of using epoxy putty. Either that or sculpt it from some spare chunks of resin that I have. I see more sanding ahead!

It's been quite a busy few days, first off was final weathering to the scope. I wanted to get the effect of seeing some primer on the wear ahead of the brass coming through. I painted the brass before applying another layer of primer in specific places and then hit it with another coat of black.

d9fe1df21e45a245f4b850f3c65b7b4f.jpg

A little more weathering

fc1622b3c344beaeed011acb1d10d23d.jpg

And then it was onto replacing the screws

59150711ecf894ee7a16ef17e71dd0c0.jpg

I then moved onto the counter. I foun this online for a couple of quid.

Removed the casing

a72eb90d41984c49b771fdf22a949b1d.jpg

Hollowed out the counter and fitted the reels

I will finish this just before its installed

887ff25d4ce83c2275e1c9cdce863427.jpg

I also replaced the fron crosshead screw along with the black detail (sorry, I don't know what it's called!) on the front after filing the original one down, as it was in a bit of a bad shape.

97435aa156358e4812822d17ddf60b15.jpg

Whilst waiting for things to dry I decided to work on the nut on the grip. I didn't fancy filling around the nut once installed. So I cut the lower part off and mounted it on a washer

74d003684b62930dec5c2bcb1425e230.jpg

Then onto the working end clip

cebd9503d4d50848bf8b3e018d336d1e.jpg

Next it was back to the stock.

I had to custom build the rear hinge of the extension tube

80aa28d052e7d680497aaaa14ed2db44.jpg

And then onto the front

The rough mock of the extension tube with hinges attached

171b81db3ba916db7898f6dc0f42f231.jpg

Next up was to figure out how to get the catch to move when opening the handle. I found that this method for the lever worked.

b2e4a6e0ff55c548d423b02196ad64cd.jpg

All components cleaned up and ready for assembly

211ab3c8b4a88a725e66d5387a3c7e56.jpg

I decided that the detail at the front of the handle had to go, so I sanded them off. I cut down some rivet nutserts, and fitted them to the handle.

f75fcbeda9c4142003b59e65ee572da7.jpg

The same decision was made to the blind rivets on the pivot detail too.

Anyway, we now have one working, self locking stock

Holy cow! Amazing mod on the stock. Always wanted to try making my stock functional but was afraid to try. <br>

Bravo! Extra weathering on the scope looks great too. Nice work on this!

Thanks for the kind words sir!

The two main issues with making the stock is that I needed to have 2 stocks as ones 5he donor for the handle, and the other is the donor for the stock. The second was not so much the mechanism inside the extension tube, but getting the lever to make enough contact to trigger it. If I can work out how to make a mold I may offer up a kit or two.

A couple of bits done..

I decided to strip down the black paint on the main body as I wasn't happy with the first coat.

Flat black applied to all holes in order to compliment the final coat

58dc15f6169e6ccf2b5065dfab00b190.jpg

First off was to drill out and make room for the extractor and plunger

c374aece6101f6c9890b7f54b40f2b94.jpg

One extractor made from 2mm abs and a 3 or 4mm (can't remember! ) tube.

e95f67c5688898f2c3791e778f3ffabe.jpg

Next was the completion of the counter. Flat black on the front, satin to the rear.

137d63b987c70b8a217ca52e2ce66cf1.jpg

f73ae075a8904c279d5b7925ee623d51.jpg

Next was to create the illusion of a thinner casing on the reciever. This was achieved by applying some matt black on the inside around 1.5-2mm from the top of the resin.

bad6044ee64c3b61ad9457169c560bda.jpg

End cap completed

dfa79f6d8a6bdae6c689b60c811972bb.jpg

Then onto the nut that houses the handle bolt. It's had the washer painted gloss black, but its masked off at the moment so no pic yet.

Thoughts?

Hey Marc, your folding stock looks awesome! :duim:  Very well done.

You have also put a lot of effort into the latest progress and it looks good to me. Your idea to create the illusion of a thinner casing on the receiver is great. I love such details :D

When you had posted the photo below in entry #26, (to be honest) I was unsure what to say about it. Later you posted a very nice weathering-update and the scope now had a much more believable look.

Although Brian's hollow-scopes are the most accurate resin versions I have ever seen, I am wondering why you want to replace yours. Maybe you can cover this question when posting about the new scope... :)

A quick update tonight.

I managed to get the paint on today.

Once dry, and a little touching up of the metal by dry brushing.I wanted to give the blaster an aged look, so I went over the complete blaster with some water based burnt umber acrylic paint. This was then "sponged" and any excess removed with a damp cloth. It's browner than in the photos, and I think it works quite well. Tomorrow will be onto the t-tracks and another coat of humbrol 53 on the bolt, which will hopefully buff up quite well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, so now I'm onto the power cells on the mag. I'm almost done building them. But, does anyone know what diameter the small resistors at the back are? 5mm? Not the three in between the cells the ones that have the waxed wire.

Regards

And here ( fingers crossed ) is the completed blaster. I still have the original scope on as I have not had the time to build the one I have of Brian's which is a number 5 scope, and a very well produced kit.

On the 10th of September you wrote: "...this is a slow burn thread".

Well, it only took you 1 month from there to end up with this fully finished blaster, including weathering, self-made power-cylinders and operational folding stock!

Not to forget your modifications on the counter, magazine cap and the scope with lenses.

Congratulations on this awesome blaster, Marc. I think you can be proud of your work and the details that were reached with this kit. :jc_doublethumbup:

Thank you so much for your kind words Tino. It really means a lot to get that kind of feedback from someone with your experience!

I started the build with the intention of just getting it done to an acceptable standard. But, the more I went along, the more I wanted to push myself. Your thread has been priceless in my build, and I would not have been able to complete it without that precious pdf. Little things like where to level the counter, and the detailed information within it is nothing more than awesome.

Thanks again T!

Yea I agree with Tino, it tool me 'for ever' and mine was a doopy kit! Good stuff!

Thanks. Believe me, I have had a fair bit of time to do this, and I spent a lot of it building. It did feel like I wasn't making much progress, I think that was because I was bouncing from one thing to another, but it all came together during the last couple of days.
