CTID's Doopy's E-11 Build

Hi all.

I am posting this thread as I have begun my Doopy's build. I have seen so many amazing builds which have astounded me in terms of people's creativity, attention to detail and skills.

Now I'm fully aware of my lack of experience, along with my limited ability. I'm not shooting for the stars with this one, but I do want to improve on the resin kit as is. All I'm looking for is to get it to a clearable standard as my Garrison won't clear you without a blaster.

Here's the kit

So here goes. First things first. That unsightly erm, front sight!

Then it's onto the ejector port.

b71ae28fabeb46e06d8cab42a8f6e097.jpg

Whilst tinkering about, I thought I would give the internal bolt and spring a go.

With the help of an empty alluminium can, some putty (which was the last little bit I had left) an ally pipe and a permanent marker I made this.

911954d2eb983253a1eae2e1dac9af53.jpg

The spring was made by wrapping the wire around the permanent marker before it was sacrificed.

It looks a bit crude now but when painted and with the abs raised diagonal bit added I'm sure it will look fine.

Next to get the rotary treatment was the sight.

I sourced a cheap 8x20mm monocular from eBay for £3.50

b46706e0d0c8ce45ec5f5fc4f1e02bdd.jpg

I ripped it apart an retained the lenses.

Next was to cut through the resin. At this point I knew there was no going back! Once the front and rear of the sight were off, I began carving out the internal resin in order to allow the lenses to be housed.

After test fitting the lenses it was time to paint the inside black. Once dry the lenses were fitted and then all glued back together. Once my putty arrives I can then fill any small gaps, mask off lenses and prep for paint.

a713a8087fafdcf12962ecd8e698fac2.jpg

Next on the list is the d ring. With a lot of time spent bending metal and swearing because it just would not go right, I ended up with this. It's the best I could do, but I think its better than the Doopy's.

68eb38c8f0e92ab96a12b9813394716e.jpg

I've also ordered some of these.

They are shelf support pins, which I will use when I install the grip and mag housing etc.

The stock has also had the treatment too.

So that's where I'm upto at the minute.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Marc, you're on a good way so far. Keep the pictures coming...

Hi T-jay and thanks! I've made my first booboo and was wondering if you could advise me on the following.

1. I didn't measure the width of strip when I sanded down the ejection port. Do you know how wide it should be?

2. I've been looking all over and can't find the dimensions of the block which houses the front sight ( it's the piece I removed when filing it out)

Hi Marc, chapter #31 (measurements) contains some of the information you are looking for.

Regarding the little knob on the magazine: I used a 5mm LED to build that. Just make sure, it does not stick out all the way - only a little bit.

Today so far has been spent drilling out the folding stock. I had a spare, so decided to go all out and hollow out the front end clip that becomes the shoulder rest. I wanted more detail than just filing into the two holes on either side, than just filing into them along with it looking more realistic as there are two pieces and not just one lump of resin. I removed the resin from the same part of the hollowed out stock, and filed down.
There's still some further sanding to go, but I'll wait until I've applied primer as it will highlight the lumps and holes better.

3309e2bbee86fdc5ad67d3c3d81985a9.jpg9b1b75c430790479680b0d1dd0638b42.jpg75aaf7c5c34299afa7c475424a852ee7.jpg979638a57becfc29eb8240caa3f3e1f6.jpga82ff9167821531281896d080af7fd4a.jpg726710f74185aafdde7c6b6ce6d020de.jpg0662e5bfcabce065a40c8f543552656d.jpg9a56a333ebb169717e4f49cdad3b5659.jpg
Marc

That can't be right?!?!?

Marc

It is! 0.136 (or 136 thou*) is about 3.4mm. Thou are quite a nice unit of measure for small stuff and the front sight isn't very big. 0.375 for example, which is the height, is about 9.5mm.

* 1 thou = 0.001". A "tenth" is a "tenth of a thou" or 0.0001". Imperial is weird, but good for small measures as you can use whole numbers.

0.1 is a tenth. No?

I'm thinking that considering I've hollowed out the stock, i could potentially make it a functional one. Not necessarily for the purpose of extending the stock, but if it functional then it will look better. We will see. .....

Made a little progress over the last couple of days.

First off was to continue to hollow out the stock. It still needs some filler sanding down, but I will move on until I see more reference shots of the front end.

The scope has now been primed and is ready for the brass undercoat to go on. I'm really happy that the seems after chopping it up can't be seen.

Spring fitted to allow for a moving trigger.

Next part of the build is the counter. I don't like the rear of the doopy counter so I intend on making improvements. I ordered a 50mm x50mm x4mm square of perspex.

4b77c656a8c844c595e5e212ae565156.jpg

Sanded it down to create a curve using coarse paper, then move onto 600, 1500 and then 2500 grit.

Polished it up with a nain buffer.

9cc64c5718f78cbad947e98aee762351.jpg

I will then fit this to the hollowed out counter once my 6 digit totalizing counter arrives.

I'm also considering replacing these parts from a doner counter that I have

88fffe1607babd2b46521ed042eb24a4.jpg

Next was to look at the mag. I dont like the doopy mag, and think it lacks detail. So it was time to bin it and get creative.

I had two other mags, however, the cleaner cast mag was missing the upside down off, along with the clip detail. The poorer cast luckily had both these details and looked ok, but the rest of it was a mess. Time to cannibalise them!

The cleaner mag was cast along with the mag housing, so I made a cut through the housing about 5mm in from the mag. I then sanded the remaining housing that was still on the end of the mag. I gave it a taper, and the fit into the doopy housing is good. I then sanded the front recess to give the sides a little more depth. I then completely removed the part with the missing "off".

It was then onto removing the plate with the upside down "off" from the other mag. Again, I cut through the mag a couple of mm away from the end plate. Yes, it was time to sand some more.

Once I was happy with the end plate, I moved on to the clip. More cuttting and sanding into the doner mag.

Heres how the mag that doopy provide looks

b4b18de48ad6354f6e6532b75bd56d94.jpg

Heres the new cannibalised mag compared the doopy mag. Its only a dry fit at the moment as I have yet to do some fine sanding before assembly.

I think the work involved was worth it. Thoughs?

Good progress, Marc. I like how you take care of the details :duim:

Thanks Tino. If someone with your skills is saying I'm on the right track, then I must be!

I'm considering making the stock functional,. Not for any reason, other than to see if I can. The only problem I'm having is purely aesthetic. By this I mean, I can't find any detailed shots of how the front of the folding stock should look

Today my LED's arrived so I can now continue with the mag, which I'll come back to.

First up though, was the moving trigger assembly usimg a pen spring and a small pin

8783ef3e2d85f8fd5682976416d9e1e7.jpg

Next up was the first stage of weathering the scope.

I wanted differing effects of weathering, such as chips, scrapes, and an effect of the black wearing off.

The first stage would be for the wear to the black paint. After the first coat of black, I dry brushed some brass onto areas that Iwanted the black to be worn, then put down a really thin layer of black. I'm happy with this first stage although I don't think the photos do it justice. Next up will be more dry brushing and detailing. Then it will be a brown acrylic wash over the top.

Next up was 4he mag and housing.

First was to place in the magnets as I wanted to be able to remove the mag for reasons such as transportation.

Both the mag and the housing were then filled

And then sanded down

Next up was filling the blemishes and tidying up.

5f19c27906f812f3c98fc9a29534627e.jpg

Then it was onto the button, I wanted to be able to press this in. So I made a post and fitted it into the mag.

The LED was attached to a pen spring which would then be trimmed down when installing.
