Death Trooper WIP (Lots of pictures)

Recommended Posts

I've wanted one of these since I joined the Legion since the person that got me started has one themselves. When Anovos had their armor deal I decided the time was right. Thus far I've mostly completed the helmet (short of electronics) and am ready to start on the rest. Hoping to be ready for reveal by DragonCon this year! And also eventually a second Centurion.

This is what I have so far:

Well, the cutting was almost exclusively dremel, other than the lens which was xacto knife. I weathered it with a leftover mix from my clone of windex and black, then did the same sort of mix with windex and nutmeg to make it more dirty and less 'charry. I added extra char around the face, then hit it with charcoal powder to char it up in that area even more. Sealed it with matte sealer. There's also specks of 'blood' around the mouth where I used some old Warhammer paints and basically flung it on a small brush to get the spatter look. I also plastidipped the inside of the helmet, which makes it darker and makes the flimsy Anovos helmet more solid.

To start the whole project I printed out 3 identical lineart stormtroopers and marked out where the damage on them was for my two friends that have Death Troopers. I then decided to make sure my damage would be in different places so we'd look good together.

I'm going to break down the making of the right forearm in excruciating detail for the folks that wanted to know the techniques used. After this part I'll just post progress generally.

First up, this is my unaltered Anovos right forearm, next to my ATA Centurion right forearm. The Anovos is large and weird looking.

IMAG5452.jpg

So the first thing I do is cut some rough end cracks into the armor. Like the delta of a river.

IMAG5455.jpg

Then I cut in a nice blaster hole, keeping in mind the direction of the shot. This one just winged me while I was reaching for them.

IMAG5456.jpg

Then to cut in all the little cracks

IMAG5457.jpg

I then did a first wash with a mix of black paint and windex:

IMAG5458.jpgIMAG5459.jpg

I then did a wash of nutmeg/windex:

IMAG5461.jpgIMAG5460.jpg

And then went in with black paint and picked out all the cracks:

Broke this into a second part because the reply window was having issues:

After the cracks are painted it needed another wash with black/windex:

IMAG5464.jpgIMAG5465.jpg

And another round of nutmeg/windex:

IMAG5466.jpgIMAG5467.jpg

Finally, I went in with charcoal powder and a matte sealer to add some scorching around the blaster hole:

IMAG5468.jpg

I need to get some scrap black underarmor/lycra cloth to trim the edges of the blaster hole before I add more zombie flesh, but other than that the arm is basically done.

Right arm is about done. Here's the bicep:

IMAG5479.jpgIMAG5480.jpg

And the shoulder (I actually put it on and bumped into the walls a few times to make sure the scuffs would be right, and hit it with some sandpaper, which made for dark weathering spots):

And finally, the finished pieces so far:

Most of the color is a wash of black or brown mixed with Windex sprayed on with a little spray bottle and wiped off with a paper towel. The blood spatter is flicked on with a brush. Charcoal powder is brushed on with a makeup sponge and rubbed with my fingers. Cracks are just hand painted with a tiny brush.

Today I finally started working on the gloves. The hand pieces I had weren't the same color as the mask, so the first step was choosing my pieces and repainting them:

IMAG5519.jpg

At that point I needed to put the hole in the glove where the flesh would show through. I used a variety of tools for an uneven look:

IMAG5520.jpg

This gave me the final result of the following:

IMAG5522.jpgIMAG5526.jpg

After that I learned that cutting latex handguards with a dremel can actually destroy the dremel if you're not careful. Fortunately I got it all done and painted up and attached:

IMAG5528.jpg

After a bit of work I have completed both hands. I may go back and do more later, but I'm calling it done for now anyway:

Not made a lot of progress beyond getting both arms done now. Got the body cut out, but going to have to get shim material before I can do the body or legs, so at a minor stand still. Got most everything cut out anyway.

After a bit off while I waited for a very slow shipper to send a part I wanted, I'm back at it. Got the chest done today. Glue's drying, so ignore the magnets.

You can also see the underarm strap is there, but 'blasted' apart. Had to put some extra straps inside to hold it together correctly since that strap won't be functional on the final armor.

For the fun of it, I threw on the upper parts to see how it looked together and check weathering consistency:

Then I started working on the boots.

My ANH Stunt TK bots are over a year old and have been to the Ren Fest and other troops, so they aren't super clean anymore. I bought a new set of "less than perfect" boots from TK Boots for this, and they were so nice, I gave them to my shiny TK, and I took the older set for this.

I dirtied them up a tiny bit more, since some of the dirt was real, and then summoned up the courage to damage them:

I burned the edges of the leather as best I could, but it was so fire retardant I ended up using charcoal powder and dirtying it that way. Also added some 'blood' coming from the cracks. Then I put in my zombie foot (which had to be repainted like ALL the other body parts to match the white skin on the mask).

Put the ab plate together today. Started out cutting out the buttons and painting and attaching them like I was building a normal TK. Left the little ridge showing around the edge that they asked for on my Centurion ANH Stunt as well, since I plan eventually having this as Centurion as well. Once it was all nice and pretty, I destroyed it.

If you look closely where the button plate is broken, I added some burned up wires sticking out:

And finally, to get a rough idea of how they look together:

I can try to take some better pics later, but these are some quick ones I happen to have atm. I've also not actually cleaned it up to look pretty inside yet, beyond the initial painting it black. Have to cover some of the foam and hair bits and things still and add some small head pads, but it's wearable as is:

13045560_807413419389548_2143088931_n.jp13023527_807414072722816_47671489_n.jpg

The pieces are glued down with foam separators to give some depth so it looks like your skin in the armor instead of something glued over the hole. Actually do that throughout the armor. You can see I cut out the eye hole since it's behind the lens where your eye can't be seen.

You can also see in the corner where I've started the back plate. It's not done yet, but it's coming along:

So, I've finished the upper body except the belt for the most part now, and haven't updated for a bit. Figured I should do that.

I laid out the back to look at it all together:

13059526_1162505110441039_385902380_n.jp

and decided I could use a new blaster shot in the kidney to make it well rounded.

13115430_1162505047107712_2051177312_n.j

I also had to add shims to the armor since I'm not 'tiny British actor' sized. Since the Anovos armor is so thin, no matter how I did it there was going to be an uneven surface (my shim material is much thicker) so rather than making a butt join between the shim and the kidney and filling it in like I did on my ATA TK, I cut the shim long and glued it inside the Anovos kidney (also conveniently fixing where they had made the little cut out for me that would be in the wrong place with shims). Then I sludged it and sanded it down, then wetsanded so the weathering would look about right when I got to that part. Some creative weathering and cracks, and you can barely see it's separate parts now. Also cut the little cutouts back into the correct place. This is much more solid than my ANH TK, and I am considering updating it now.

And while the belt isn't done yet, the thermal det is:

13090080_1162505030441047_180847213_n.jp13090066_1162505010441049_1117773961_n.j13084332_1162505020441048_1511757080_n.j

I even carried some of the damage over to the metal clips for some reason. I guess I'm just an overachiever.
