One of two ways:

 

- The easiest way is to look for the square-shaped kidney notch (which not every kit has). If it has that, then that goes toward the bottom.

- If not, you'll have to look at the shape as seen from the side. It should have the same curvature that a normal human spine does.

I have an ATA kit. One side is a smooth curve. The other side has some sharper curves towards the outside edges. When I say sides, I mean the horizontal sides.

Hold the kidney plate vertical and place the back plate on top of it, leaning it back about 20 degrees or so. If it doesn't look right, flip the kidney plate over. One of the two options will look much better. Go with that.
