Military Service

Who here is in the real world's military past and present?

Oh, and lets include the globe on this one. I served with some Awesome RAF & Marine brits and some Aussies that could drink a man to death over in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. :D

Include your Country, Branch, duty title, time in, and if you want rank.

I'll go first...

Active Duty United States Air Force

2E271 - pretty much computer geek

E-5 Staff Sergeant, tested for E-6 though so I got my fingers crossed.

Been in almost 8 yrs and it is a love hate relationship but I think I'm going for the full twenty.

So be proud about your service to your respective country, even if you're French! :P

Admin - if I have made a thread you all don't approve of then please delete. This is not intended to offend anyone or cause problems. Just trying to get to know people.

Enlisted in the Army Reserves as an 11B (Infantry - Rifleman) in 1987. I did split option as I was in college at the time - Harmony Church for basic, then over to Sand Hill for AIT (both are parts of Ft. Benning).

Switch to WI ARNG and moved MOS to 67V (OH-58 Helicopter Repair) in '89. Completed PLDC & NBC Training in reserve schooling, but actually did full time schooling for BNCOC (Ft. Eustis) and safety school. Plus I did some full time (contract) work as well in admin and also as a wrench.

Alas, my unit was slated to go to Desert Storm but it ended too quickly and we never got deployed.

Finally got out after 10 years in 1997 - wish I had stayed in to be honest. Then again, I wish I had finished ROTC and gotten my commission too, rather than staying enlisted.

The downside to the Guard is even if you have your schooling there still has to be a slot in your MOS to get promoted, so even though I made E-5 in four years and completed BNCOC, there were no open E-6 slots in my MOS (there were only 3 - count 'em 3 - 67V30 slots in the state), so E-5 I remained. Finally got tired of waiting for one to open, which is why I got out.

US Navy 1992 - 1996

Lieutenant, Surface Warfare Officer

DCA and Navigator in USS Simpson (FFG-56)

Occasionally I get nostalgic and wish I would have stayed in the reserves but it certainly has allowed me to go on to better things.

Hmmm...

Started in 1989 with conscript service.

Served as a Rifle Squad Leader in Lebanon, 1991.

Started NCO training in 1993, LRRP class. Completed in 1994, with another year as LRRP patrol leader.

Been at it ever since. Spent some time doing various tasks back home in Norway from 1995 to 1996.

After that, recce patrol leader in Bosnia for 1 1/2 years, then 6 months in Bosnia as 2IC for same platoon, then 6 months as Intel officer in Kosovo for same platoon.

Recce/Liason officer from mid-2001 to the end of 2002, before I went over to "the dark side" in 2003, becoming a full time "civilian" employee.... ;)

I've spent 3 tours in Afghanistan since then, 2 times ISAF and 1 time OEF, and I'm on the verge of going out on my fourth tour this summer, returning (...hopefully...) right across Christmas. Then another 3 months next year. Currently I'm a Major, and considering I've spent the last 10 years of my life more or less outta my homecountry, I'm guessing next year will be my last. So, major will be my highest rank (for those times that I put on a uniform, that is....civilian otherwise).

REALLY getting tired of deserts and dirt-brown mountains at this time, and longing for a more or less calm life doing.....something....whatever. :D

And messing about with Star Wars costumes ;)

Kudos to everyone doing military service, and contributing outside of their home country!

Thanks for the compliment on "cool officers". I'll throw one back at your for MRs. My first six months on board, I had no DCC and my MR1 ran the shop and kept me out of a lot of trouble. Not having a chief, he had to fight the other chiefs in the Chief's Mess to get things done but no request went unanswered and he never asked for anything more than coffee and donuts. He made a great first impression for all MRs out there and taught this new ensign a lot about the respect to give to the senior enlisted.

Good times. Hard to believe that was 15 years ago! Enjoy your new found civilian life; it will go by fast!

U.S. Air Force, entered active duty in 1993 right after graduating from college & completing Air Force ROTC

38 years old, 12 years active, 2.5 years reserve (and counting)

13S3A/C/E - space operations, 62E3B - astronautical engineer. Basically a dyed-in-the-wool space geek ever since I was a kid :D

Major (O-4), up for LtCol (O-5) next year

Made the jump to the reserves due to family issues, but no regrets. I have the best of both worlds. Great civilian job, and awesome cutting-edge military duty assignment.

Definitely staying until retirement :salute:
