New Recruit from Phoenix Arizona! Any beginner advice welcome.

Recommended Posts

Hello troopers!

I'm a 24 year old Afghan vet (Navy Seabee), and I live in Phoenix AZ at the moment. I'm attending the Art Institute of Phoenix for graphic design but my real love is sci fi concept art, Ralph McQuarrie style.

I'm a short (5'2) female, slim build, looking to start a basic Stormtrooper costume, before I expand into bounty hunters and the like. Baby steps. I've never had a decent costume before and I'd love any advice!

I've attached a shot of my mug. Any takers willing to advise me on putting a nice shiny white bucket on it?

As for background, I'm originally from central Connecticut, and spend a lot of time in Downeast Maine. I served in the US Navy as a Seabee (Carpentry and concrete) for 4 years and I'm currently in the reserves since my active duty tour is done. I've deployed twice, and love my troops like family. HOWEVER....my first military was always the Star Wars universe military! I grew up on the films, and as a girl with a brother 18 years older than her, my childhood was steeped in Sci Fi of all kinds. I'm also an artist, and love more than anything the original concept art for the movies. Avid gamer and animal lover, fairly covered in tattoos (none that would show when in costume, even with bucket off) and pretty addicted to Tacos. I currently live in Glendale, Az. What else needs to be said? Please respond. I'd love to find my nerd family, since I know noone locally, and I'd enjoy putting on a uniform again.

Hello and welcome aboard, the best advice is read, read and read again and once you think you know it all read once more lol. Most of this hobby is the information and how much you can absorb, to do it right you must have the know how. Good luck with the lid build can't wait to see to see your thread in motion.

Welcome Sarah!

You´ve definitely come to the right place :smiley-sw013:

Were a pretty nice nerd familiy ;)

The Stormtrooper is a great start, may I ask you what kind of helmet kit you´ve bought?

Have fun on your way of entering the ranks :duim:

Such a shame to hide a cute face like yours under a TK helmet  anyways . . . welcome to FISD, thank you for your service to our country. I met a couple great members from the Dune Sea Garrison last month. If you can attend the Phoenix Comic Con later this month I'm sure you'll run into them. The best advice I have for a new recruit is to meet your fellow garrison mates. Don't be shy . . . most won't bite. They're eager to gain new members and "show you the ropes" to be an outstanding TK.

I'll definitely be at Phoenix comicon , as i become more aware of the date, I'll let you know. I'll be wearing the shirt in my picture, for SURE!

The helmet kit I bought is and ANH white styrene cast from a movie prop, I think 15mm thick they said. I dont have the money or knowhow to cast my own as much as I'd like to, but I looked at the photos and the detail is CRISP, especially around the mouth and frown. I'm anal-retentive about that stuff, even when I used to paint pewter models for tabletop stuff :) Next step is figuring out what all I need , since it only comes with ears front and back.

Let me guess: You bought this kit on ebay from makerofthings!.

Sarah..... I'm sorry to say that, but you bought from a recaster ( someone who copys the work of a real prop creator and sells it for profit).

Also styrene is pretty flimsy and propably won't withstand the rigors of trooping.

Anyway you will need some rivets, proper screws and nuts, the necktrim and the proper trim for the front , also you need the green acetat lens material and decals or paint for the details .

Have a look at www.trooperbay.com

Most of this stuff you will find there ;-)

Minuteman,

Yup, I sure did. I wasn't sure, the way he phrased it sounded like it was his work, and the details looked really good. I wont make the mistake again. But good news, I bought all the other crap, and the black bodysuit. progress!

If it makes you feel better, I fell for the same trick but I bought the full armor... so I get to re-buy my armor from one of the vendors here now... Guess I now have a kit to practice trimming my armor with so I won't mess it up my new kit, though if I go with the kit I think I'm going with I won't have to trim anything at all.

thats how i saw it. I will use this first kinda lightweight recast bucket as practice. My brother said he might be able to give me some tips on crafting the rest. He used to make fully functional and combat ready suits of armor to do reenactments o.O so he's a master crafter haha.

Welcome to FISD, Sarah! Always love to have the new ladies in white! There are a lot of great troopers in your local garrison so be sure to join their web site as well.

As for the quote above, you asked for it... I'm sure you could do a MUCH better job (and I hope I don't do you a disservice by modifying your proud moment!) but I couldn't resist... :D (All with good humor and respect!)

My advice is not to jump in too fast. Not sure how long you have researched, but I have been gung ho about this for the last week, dreaming of it for years, but I want to do it right and want to be sure I get the best quality for the lowest price. I have not yet bought anything and I'm glad. I find daily goodies in researching and instead of paying $40+ for a neck seal I'm likely to have my fellow garrison mate or my sister in-law help me sew one up since I'm not super crafty.

Anywho, hope the stuff you bought is what you need and that you are able to get a nice set of armor :). For your height and build based on the photo of you, I'd probably suggest ATA , AP, or if you want to get pricey there are others far more expensive.

Good luck! And welcome.

LOL thanks for the photoshop. Punkers, I'm not too familiar with the acronyms yet (though I look over that post at least once daily) but ill look into what youve said. It will be tough to outfit me. I'm rather bottomheavy but slender otherwise. Even earth clothes dont fit ;) I definitely cant afford much so I will look into ATA and APThanks!

In an effort to keep those curious updated:  I'm about to purchase a better helmet from ATA and use the flimsy one as practice/halloween/drunken party gags. I foresee playing cards against humanity with it on ;)

So! New helmet soon, I'll try to meet the DSG guys at PHX comicon (wearing the shirt pictured left) and I got a bit of bad news as well, and will have to ask my roommate to move out for a bit. That being said my budget is officially pinched and right out of the gate I have to put a pause on this new project. The helmet is all I will get to do for awhile. I'll stay on here and keep learning in the meanttime.

Good choice on the ATA helm over the other you got, and not a bad idea to practice.

Sorry to hear about your roomie, and having to pause your build.  I've got the itch like nothing else to get started but i've been holding off hoping to find more tips and deals before I make the plunge.

Hope you are able to get things sorted out and get yourself back on track :)

Hi all, got a little update for you. (disclaimer: I am aware this is a crappy recast with low detail. it was an early mistake and I've purchased an ATA bucket since then.)

-I made it to PhX comicon and got way too shy to introduce myself....also distracted by the 8' tall wookiee, OMG. Great costume. You all looked wonderful, Dune Sea, MEPD. Nice turnout. I am in no way surprised that the Star Wars nerds are the cool kids at a comicon. ;) Went and hung out with Wil Wheaton and Nichelle Nichols, looked at the art, and then the fire alarm went off. Whomp whomp.

-I have started assembly! Finals have ended, I figured out my dremel now that I have spare time, and trimming is going REALLY quickly. I hope to have my HIPS ANH bucket done by two weeks from now (waiting on some parts that never showed? ) and the ATA helmet...at some point, it got mailed to my brother because he has better trimming tools and it's thicker. So I'll have two buckets.

-My budget is a bit thin as previously stated, so I sold my tv..and that money is going to finish my sleeve. So we will see when I can dish out the clams for the rest of the armor and supplies. I do have the under suit and a few other things but it's the actual pulls that are costly. I'm trying to start up a T-shirt/poster/sticker store online so here's hoping for some extra income. [nobody cares about art these days *stompstomp]

I sure am trying! The website keeps giving me an error with the security question. I do know my trivia and I've double checked but that stops me every time. I heard they were having an armor party on the 22nd that I would love to attend so i will keep trying. :/ and thats GREAT that they're vets! I've heard of a few guys trooping around Luke AFB.

Yes we are having a armor party on the 15 and the 22nd, first one I am helping a buddy put together a Death trooper and on the 22nd helping a buddy build a animated Captain Rex. You are more than welcome to come to either one, the first one is in Glendale and the second one is in Phx. Come mingle get some pointers and we can help you get logged onto the forums. If you have any questions just P.M. and I can give you some directions for either armor party.

Definitely get in touch with the DSG troops. They're good people.

Oorah, and thanks for your service! I was a submariner, myself. Glad to see more Navy veterans on here. :jc_doublethumbup:
