E-11 Power Cylinders Research Thread (renamed from "3 Central Fuses...")

Thanks Stefan :)

Jens - I'll add you to my "no-obligation" interest list & drop you a line when they're ready. Did Marv give some away too or do you mean Rob (Matt Black)? Rob's were the 5.5mm ones. The paint finish would be better if I added the capacitors because they'd get the same finish as the rest of the unit.

Cheers, Andy

Than also count me in for one set :):duim:

Thanks Rob :)

Stefan & Daniel, I've added you guys to the list, cheers :)

I got a load of nuts, bolts & washers in the post today. They're enough to make 25 sets so that should keep me out of mischief for a while. They're so small, I feel like a giant!

I considered whether it'd be more authentic to have a threaded rod run right the way through the outer cylinders but I don't think it would because the end caps of the originals are soldered on at each end. I feel this soldering would have been unnecessary if the threaded rod ran right the way through & had nuts on the end so I've gone with this way. Hopefully one day we'll find one & be able to take it apart :)

Thank you, Andy ;)

Thanks Matt :)

Sorry Sergiu, the project has moved forward a little bit but not very far. Work has been mad & other "life" stuff has kept cropping up.

Don't worry, I'm not going to lose interest in the cylinders and I'll get them finished & ready for sale as soon as humanly possible :)

Cheers, Andy

That sounds good....but keep it easy :duim:

Andy,

to be honest - i don´t think you need to be to worried about that problem.

Makers who want to make cash from such stuff, need to make numbers to lower the production costs. To make numbers you need a kind of simplified design that can be cnc´d easily (basically the correct shape but without the sloppy work the propmakers of SW used to do).

Most costumers want it cheap and are not willing pay high prices, only a few nuts do that - so there is also no big market for very high priced parts, that would justify the cnc´d parts to have additional treatment by hand to achieve the sloppy SW look. Many small but remarkable details in the sloppy work on the originals happened due to using simple conventional machines, handdriven and without cnc, under time pressure and not looking for even spaces and so on. When i get the real parts and the new cnc´d addons for a collectors build, it´s usually more work to make the cnc´d parts look conventional, than to build the gun/piece itself.

That, and the hard to come by real parts (capacitors), are the limiting factors in production. Real collectors that are willing to pay high prices are usually not interested in resin copies when the real parts are identified.

No, i see no big problem. If someone is gonna start to make them, they will have the usual shortcuts most parts have that are made in numbers (but i´m not saying that handmade parts are in general better, most are not - it´s a walk on a knifes edge to get the correct amount of straightness and sloppyness).

If you have more accurate plans than the one you showed here makes no difference - first there is no way to prove that they are really more accurate, as thay all are only extrapolated from pics without having the real deal to compare. Second the theoretical accuracy needs to be replicated accordingly, otherwise the plans accuracy means nothing. 0,5mm/0,02" is not much difference, but for someone paying a high price it should be - that´s what calipers are for. ;-)

So, that´s why i don´t think you need to get a headache. :-)

cnc run is faster and keeps costs down

Hi Sven, consider yourself added :)

I've had chance to work on them some more yesterday so they're getting closer!

I like your signature line, "If you care enough for a result, you will most certainly attain it." That seems very appropriate to this thread - is it a quote from someone famous?

Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy, actually i dont know where i ve read it.

I dont take credits for it since it might be a quote.

But i like it a lot thats why its in the signature.

Cheers mate.

Let me know when they arrived.

Hey Stefan. It kills me to show pics of work I know isn't right yet but here's a diagram of the rear components I'm putting on the Power Cylinders. I won't put them all on because some will have got ripped off but this shows where they were originally. The components that were attached to the outer cylinders definitely got removed, even on the Y-Wing computer so I've not shown them. I've yet to work out what attached to the top capacitor.

Hope it's enough of a teaser to keep you going...

So the day of a sales thread is getting closer. I finally accepted that I can't make them accurate enough with just hand tools so I bought a little lathe.

It's an Emco Unimat, used by modelmakers/clockmakers/gunsmiths and mine is actually older than Star Wars - it was made in 1974!

Here's my first trial piece - a mini Luke V1 saber. The lathe isn't automated so I won't be able to mass produce these - it was just for learning the techniques of my new tool.

I hadn't expected turning to be so much fun - it's really meditative watching the piece slowly change shape. Lessons learned, I set to making the outer cylinders.
