Take it easy on the Newbie please...Helmet questions

Recommended Posts

Please take a look at the pics at the bottom of post.......

I am apologizing in advance for my ignorance.

I just received this helmet in the mail today. Can someone please tell me what model name/number this is considered? The description said it was a "Don Post" -whatever that means (manufacturer?).

I purchased this to restore it. I am looking for lenses, preferably chrome, but I understand I may have to make those from a motorcycle shield. If anyone can recommend where to purchase Chrome lenses, it would be appreciated. Otherwise, suggestions on smoked ones would be good. What is the deal with the green lenses? Today when I registered on the site and did a lens search was the first I had seen the green lenses.

My last question is regarding the black helmet in the last pic. Who wore that helmet, and is it considered sacrilege to try to convert mine to this?

I am HUGE into vintage bmx restoration and very active on the bmxmuseum forum. I can only imagine the butt-kicking that I am inviting with this post. Please bear in mind that while I saw the first Star Wars movie as a boy in the theaters and I have been an avid fan, this is the first i have looked into this stuff on this level. Thank you guys very much for your help an patience. Once again, please take it easy on me. I did some searches but this stuff is all a bit overwhelming for a Newbie.

Don Post is the guy who was famous for making masks back in the days, did a lot of original stuff with latex. I hate to be the bearer of bad news here Dave, I hope you didn't put a pretty penny into this... I can't even tell you who did that helmet but it's a rip-off and looks nothing like what a stormtrooper helmet should look like. It should look exactly or very close to the 2nd picture you posted (only white not black).

Sorry bud.

Don't be sorry at all bro. I paid a staggering ONE DOLLAR for it. I plan to take all the decals off it, paint the helmet and the details. Going to be a fun project for me, and for it's intended use, it will be perfect. I appreciate the input bro. Anyone else that can chime in about it, or about the lenses, would be greatly appreciated. No worries -you won't offend me. Perhaps this will be a stepping stone into getting something real later. We all gotta start somewhere.

Phew! Good to hear haha. With the green lenses - that's a screen accurate thing for us all here. In the movies if you look at screen shots of the helmets or the actual helmets themselves, they either used flat green or bubble green lenses, and some used dark grey bubble lens. Similar to those of a welders mask.

I'm not familiar on where to get the smoke/chrome lenses myself though, hopefully one of the other fellows here have some info on that.

Hi Dave,

Yeah, don't be afraid to ask people here first before buying something. We were all newbies once as well, and we're all here for the same reason as you. So don't sweat it... I understand how "a good deal" may seem too good to pass up at times, but just make sure you really know what your'e getting, and who your'e buying it from. Fully understand the sellers reputaion before clicking "Buy it Now." Matter of fact... stay away from ebay all together! You'll thank me later.

Have fun!

Jess

I have a similar helmet with the same 20th century fox scratched in the back. I wonder if that was a stamp? It looks identical. I got mine in the early 1980's out of the back of a Starlog magazine for $50 bucks. I saved up lawn mowing money all summer for it. It was shipped to me via greyhound bus. My dad had to take me to the station to pick it up. Now, back then I thought I was the cream if the crop with my helmet and Kenner Blaster LOL. Only my helmet didn't have lenses, it had little holes poked out throughout the eye area. I cut out the eye and put homemade lenses in it and still have it to this day. Allthough, I have added to my collection of helmets over the years. Not a bad find for a dallor. Oh and welcome to the FISD! :)

Beleive it or not, I'd like to have a Don Post in my collection. Just for the history of it..

As for the chrome lense, try motor cycle visors :)

I was going to suggest Tinfoil, but I like your idea better! ;)

Believe it or not that really is a Don Post helmet. He did some (slightly) better ones in the 90's with the release of the Sharper Image Stormtrooper statues but that's his original TK. I don't why he did them in rubber, but the same moulds were used I believe by Rubies for their rubber haloween trooper helmets. His Vader was in a nice shiny plastic (I've actually got one of those too, purchased at StarTours circa 1989/90) and it's not bad but boy is it small!

Dave - if you're looking for info and history without getting headlong into then hobby side (I assume you're looking to turn this into something for BMX?) the check out www.StarWarsHelmets.com - they've even got the low down on Don Post!
