Painting Rank on Ear Piece

Recommended Posts

What are the different ranks determined on the ear of the helmet and how do you decide which you are? It would seem a little presumptuous of a noobie like me to go and paint on some high rank, but I had never heard of the rank on the ear until reading the helmet threads.

How should I determine my own?

it would kinda be cool to have someone in command staff work out the ranking system for fun.

Oh I really, really wish I'd have kept what I originally had typed about "Vern will probably have more to say about it." :D haha

Love ya man!

I will third that! As noob, I will proudly paint low ranks and upgrade as the forum decides fit. Tell me who to pester about a ranking system! I was hoping there would already be one in place, it would be really great.

There are 15 combinations if you include no striping, which would easily allow 8 enlisted ranks + 7 officers. We could easily make this:

0 = no stripe

1 = stripe

Below makes it also dead simple to tell an officer from an enlisted man.

ENLISTED (note all start with 0)

0000 - PVT : Private (and private recruit)

0001 - PFC : Private First Class

0010 - CPL : Corporal (assistant team leader)

0011 - SGT : Sergeant (team leader)

0100 - SSG : Staff Sergeant (squad leader)

0101 - SFC : Sergeant First Class (platoon sergeant)

0110 - MSG : Master Sergeant / First Sergeant

0111 - CSM : Command Sergeant Major / Sergeant Major

OFFICER (note all start with 1)

1000 - WO : Warrant officer (all ranks, e.g. WO1)

1001 - 1LT/2LT : Lieutenant (2nd or 1st) (platoon leader)

1010 - CPT : Captain (company commander)

1011 - MAJ : Major (batallion XO, usually) (aka sub Commander)

1100 - LTC : Lieutenant Colonel (batallion commander) (aka Commander)

1110 - COL : Colonel (brigade commander)

1111 - GEN : General (all ranks)

I'm lumping in all the Generals as it's unlikely many will don full armor, as most will probably be like General Veers and with a simple helmet/chest armor. Also, I'd suspect that if they did need to don full armor there would be so few at one time that distinguishing between a Brigadier General or Lt General, etc. wouldn't be very helpful.

So the next step is figuring out a way to implement this in the FISD. It would be fun especially in con style troops to have lower ranking members saluting higher officers and such. IDK. but yeah it could be fun.

Yeah. Hmm.. Could we use pinstripe tape for the ranking so we could change it whenever we "rank up"?

would it be considered 'jumping' the gun if i were to paint my old British army rank onto my ears.

i left the army in the year 2000 as an Infantry Corporal...ie: 2 stripes

or should i start at the bottom as a 'recruit'

Here's a visual reference to give you an idea of what they would look like :)

Hmm, not sure why it has to conform to US ranks! Sgt First Class, Master Sgt etc

Interesting theory and some hard work done there.

To me it seems a reason to give some an ego boost, ie i am a higher rank than you, not my idea of FUN trooping I'm afraid.

Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for 2011
