  1. So...I have a question about the CRL's for both TFA Phasma and TLJ Phasma regarding the boots. The CRL for TFA Phasma (and TLJ Phasma at the moment) states that , "Boots are black suede, leather, or leather-like, absent of laces, with no pronounced heel." Now, by "pronounced heel" are we talking like a straight up high heel similar to women's heels?  Also, the thing I'm most confused about when it comes to the WIP CRL for TLJ Phasma's boots is that it states, " Boots must be FO style (side zip)" when it comes to lv2/lv3 approval. Does this mean that, so long as the boot is black (suede, leather, or leather-like) with no pronounced heel (a la women's high heels) and has a side zipper, it fulfills the requirements for lv2/lv3 approval?

You're very welcome, happy to help! :) That's quite a tall order for your first build, but I hope you have a blast getting it all together!

Haha, yeah, you wouldn't be the first one to think it was a rather ambitious decision to go with Phasma as my first build, but to be completely honest with you, I'm not feeling nearly as intimidated by it as I thought I would. At the moment, anyway. Might be a different story once I actually get my BBB full of armor parts, lol. Still, I'm looking forward to it! And I've always got people here and on the Captain Phasma Costumers FB group to help steer me in the right direction :)

  3. So much information! Thank you for providing such a detailed overview of the process, with pictures too! I'm a costume newbie looking to build a lv3 Captain Phasma for 501st approval as my first ever build, so any highly detailed information about the actual building process is MUCH appreciated. Definitely worthy of a bookmark! :)

  4. Yeah, I watched a brief review of the Rubies' one on youtube and the reviewer said it was really small and "thin", but would suffice for just typical cosplay. But, as I'm sure many can attest to, the 501st isn't "typical" cosplay, lol.

What are the Pro's and Con's of a 3D printed Phasma rifle vs. a resin build? Looking forward, I want to be as comfortable as possible while trooping, so I don't want a rifle with too much heft that it makes my arms sore, but enough so that it feels like I'm actually holding something and not just a hollow object.

  5. I know blasters aren't required for basic approval into the 501st, but are required for EIB and Centurion levels. Regarding Phasma's F-11D for Centurion status -- and this is only a hypothetical question -- would something like the Rubies' blaster suffice, so long as it was modded to appear more screen accurate (include the LEDs and the torch, etc.)? Or would I need something more substantial? I'm probably going to be getting something far more substantial for my build -- "If you're going to do something, do it right." is what my dad always says -- but I'm just trying to satisfy my curiosity.

    Hello from Calgary, AB!

I saw the booth and the panel by the 501st at the Calgary Expo and decided to give it a shot. I have to say, I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing, but I'm really hoping to meet some friendly people and have a good time.

Hi there, fellow female stormie-in-training! I can understand being nervous about the whole thing. I am too, but it's OK! I've only been here a few days myself, and everyone has been rather helpful and answered whatever questions I've had -- and since I'm going to be Phasma, I've had a LOT of questions, lol. The good thing is though that since everyone is so helpful, it helps to take away a bit of the nerves. Good luck to you, and long live the First Order!

Here to answer so please ask anything!

On the kit..  I have an ABS original trilogy trooper, and I will say I am never going back.  Is it heavier, yes, is it more prone to slight cracks, maybe, maybe not.  But, the ease of working with it once you get used to it is second to none.  I found that it was easier to cut and sand as you are not fighting it melting..  I also think it is more comfortable which trades off for the weight and more easy to repair.  There are no pinches anywhere and I love how flexible it is.  SOmeone said that it becomes more wearable with time as your body heat helps to mold it a little.  I think that is true.  Plus the details are crazy good.

Yes we knew we would have to trim... and remove seams..... and paint.. All things we have never done before.  We started cutting right away and it was so much easier than we thought.  Cut about 3/4 inch abs strips to close the seams from behind then bondo'd over.  Really easy.  Cutting the height of thigh and leg armor was equally as easy.  Depending on your build (measurements) you should not have an issue finding 3 more inches.  My wife has super skinny arms, we may have pushed the limit on how small the biceps could go.  Assuming your arms are more proportional, should be ok...  We fit arms and legs first.  THen we did the ab armor.  Used hot water to get it super bendy then taped off and cut up the middle in the back.  Naomi has a fairly large chest and the ab plate flexed around there well.  What I was super nervous about was cutting the chest.  Cut some from the top and bottom and it was actually very easy with the dremel cutting wheel..  Just draw good lines and it cuts very easily.  Look at the shots of fitting 1 and 2 for the before and after.  I wanted her phasma to have a more feminine line to it.  I think it helped.

Spaz and Allclad, relatively the same beast.  Spaz half as expensive and easy to get on amazon prime, so I tried it first.  Loved the result, stuck with it.  I prefer the "dirty" phasma look over the pure mirror, so I love the results.  If you want mirror, and have the budget, go with VM or spectrachrome.

I hate the fingers! We are looking to get smaller fingers from someone..  Naomi has small hands.  Yes it hampers handling, but you wont be handling much when dressed up.

Blaster is Justin Branfhur on etsy.  HIGHLY recommend.

Thank you so much for the detailed reply! I admit, seeing the progress photos of this from fitting to completion has me rather excited! :0Lighten:

  8. Wow! This came out fantastic! I have some questions, hope you don't mind, as I'm terribly close to pulling the trigger on acquiring a Captain Phasma kit from Jimi... Well, the helmet at least, lol. As I've never done this before, I'm doing baby steps. If I can handle the helmet and it comes out great, then I'll acquire the armor next.

What is the quality of the kit like? I understand it's a type of flexible fiberglass.

Concerning the overall process, I assume that once the parts are accounted for (nothing missing, etc.) you try a test fit to gauge what needs to be modified (I'm even shorter than your wife at 5'3" so I'm already assuming I'll have to do some heavy modifying of the armor itself) and then get to work trimming and the like?

In regards to the chrome, how durable is the Spaz-tix compared to something like Alclad or even a chrome wrap?

Regarding the hand/finger armor, does it -- especially the C3PO style fingers (which were changed in TLJ to be more like medieval style fingers) -- hamper the ability to hold/grip things?

And lastly -- where did you get the rifle? :D

Yes, it’s the tube thing. :)

Gah, I thought so! Thank you, Harbinger. :)

If my opinion matters, I have mixed feeling about the thermal detonator. On one hand, save for a few changes, Phasma's armor is just like a regular FO TK's and should therefore have the thermal detonator included for basic 501st approval. On the other hand, it's rarely (if ever) actually seen on screen, obstructed by the cape... So I guess what I'm trying to say is I tend to agree with Daetrin, meaning that it shouldn't be mandatory for basic approval, but a requirement for L2 and L3 consideration.

  10. I'm unsure of this will be of any help to anyone (including myself) intending to build their Phasma costume, but I did a bit of digging and found out  what the actual on screen TFA Phasma armor is made out of, part by part. The parts are as follows:

    Helmet -- Chrome vacuum-plated 3-D printed nylon

Cape -- Cotton canvas coated and painted with binder

Armor -- Chrome vacuum-plated molded polyurethane

    Undersuit -- Cotton lycra

Gussets -- Molded rubber and cotton and lycra

    Collar -- Neoprene and rubber

    Belt -- Rubber

Gloves -- Chrome-painted 3-D printed fingers over leather

Boots -- Chrome vacuum-plated polyurethane armor over leather

Just consider it a reference, I guess? Just trying to help my fellow Troopers (even if I'm technically not one. Yet.)

What amazes me is that no one has done a Phasma in ABS.  Below is a pic of a bucket I just finished that I bought from AM.  The photo really doesn't do it justice, but the danged thing is incredibly shiny, looks exactly like chrome, and was not painted.

That kind of reminds me of how Phasma looks at Disney World and now Disneyland. The suit has a similar finish.

My apologies up front for coming off as a derp, but I suffer from visual impairment -- where is Phasma's thermal detonator located in this picture? I'm used to looking at the round ones (like Bounty Hunter Leia showed Jabba in ROTJ) -- is it that tube-like thing on her lower back?

    Phasma is an epic build!!!

Make sure to get in contact with your local Garrison- they can help assist you in your journey. Great to have you aboard the FISD Lyn!

Yeah, she is! I have a tendency to skip the kiddie pool and jump headlong into the deep end, if you know what I mean, lol. But I crave a challenge so I'm looking forward to the project.

And you will be happy to know I've already bookmarked my local Garrison, the Golden Gate Garrison, so I'll be ready to ask questions both here and there once I begin work on my project.

    Hey Lyn,

Glad you found us here at the FISD. We are all a little crazy I think if we decide this to be our hobby ;)

As you mentioned, you have already started research in the "getting started thread" But if you have not done so already, definitely check out the Phasma area: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/188-captain-phasma-tfa-and-tlj/

Once you are ready, create a build thread. Fellow troopers will be giving feedback and insight during the build. Best of Luck trooper!

Ah! Thank you so much for the tip! I'm still working my way around the forum and wasn't aware there was a Phasma area -- it will most definitely come in handy!

Hello and welcome to the FISD! Any thoughts as to which one you'd like to do? There are some differences between TFa and TLJ.

Thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah, I know about the differences between the suit in TFA and TLJ (at least the more obvious changes, like the finish and how the bottom portion of the leg armor is one continuous piece in TLJ and two pieces in TFA) and honestly, I'm leaning more towards the TFA version at the moment, but I'm so early into things that there's plenty of time for it to change.

To my fellow future Troopers, thank you for such a warm welcome! :peace:
