  1. Vern...

The "swoop" in the shoulders refers to the ornamental ridge sculpted into the original ANH mould, not that angle at which the armor is worn, nor the curve of how it's trimmed or any other superficial/assembly characteristic. It's IN the part. The original suits had one shoulder bell where the ridge "swoops" backwards. AP kits don't have it. Both shoulders are identical. As are the biceps.

    ----

You can very clearly see both shoulders are the same in the AP kit.

    -----

And in the screen grab of Han's suit in ANH, you can easily see that one shoulder has a pronounced, evident swoop in the ridge. (Thanks, Tony, for the image)

    ------

These aren't subtle intricacies, visible only to people who own AP armor.

They're clearly visible in photos. They're fairly obvious physical characteristics.

Which is why SO many people have noted them in threads like these.

AP kits DO reuse one half of one shin on both legs.

    ----------

AP DOES have the ROTJ overlap moulded into ALL the arm and leg pieces.

Trust me, dude-- no one here is trying to advance misinformation, or suppress the truth from coming out, or pick on you..

But unless AP has made some HUGE modifications to his kit we're all unaware of, the stuff you've asserted here simply isn't correct.

Thanks guys. I now know where to go to spend more money - cheers guys ;-)

anyone fancy pm'ing me a contact for an ANH blaster :-)

I think these guys make really nice rubber-cast ones:

    ------------

And if you seek "ItchyNuts", he makes amazing hand-made ones. Don't let the name throw ya' off. :P

    They're works of art.

  3. You'd have to adapt this one quite a bit-- removing the "U" track, replacing it with "T" track, altering the front nozzle, removing the D ring from the side... etc., etc.

I honestly think you'd be better off leaving this one as it is, and getting a separate ANH blaster altogether.

It's a fantastic gun-- it's just not for the right movie.

Why not use this as a perfect excuse to get a new ANH blaster and have TWO awesome props? :D

  4. Good stuff... but where's "Yankie," the engineer with an American midwest accent? :)

Yankie-- played with a horrible American accent by a guy from Bavaria. :P

Pretty sure the whole nation of Scotland would love to punch James Doohan in the gut for doing such a terrible brogue on those shows.

Almost as good as Sean Connery's Russian Navy skipper.

"Uh... doesh the shubmarine captain have to be from Leningrad? Can't we shay he'sh from just outshide Edinburgh?"

  5. Vern -- the overlap is a strictly ROTJ feature, if I'm not mistaken.

The AP kit has the overlap moulded into the parts, because the armor was cast from an ROTJ suit.

To emulate the ANH/ESB suits, you should trim AWAY the overlap seams, leaving only enough edge to accommodate the finishing strips.

I made the same mistake when I put together my first GF -- I went for an ANH look, but I used the overlap. To my knowledge, this was incorrect.

It won't keep you out of the 501st, or preclude you from EIB status at present, but it's not esthetically consistent with the suits in the first two movies.

As I learned more, I came to understand that if I wanted to duplicate the construction method in ANH, I should have ditched the overlap altogether.

Also, every reference photo I've ever seen shows the ANH and ESB stunt helmets with flat green acetate lenses.

Only the hero helmets had the bubble lenses.

Not to be contentious, but it does seem as though you're confusing ESB details with ROTJ details.

  6. Got my TK409 neck seal. Absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend!!

Hey, Eric -- I'm not really too thrilled with the neckseal I have now, and would like to replace it... does the TK-409 seal's material extend below the cut-out in the back plate?

My gripe with the one I have now is that it's too short, and I have to tuck the "dickie" material into my undersuit..... and that sounded way more filthy that I intended it to. Eeeechhhh.

  7. Vern- I'm right there with ya'.

I think TM, AP and TE2 are among the very best there is.

I think the reason you see more TM and TE2 banners and siggies around here, is because TM and TE2 themselves are around here.

While AP makes a fantastic set of armor, and is a solid, reliable producer, he doesn't have the same kind of hands-on, day to day presence in the hobby that Paul and Mr. X have.

I think the signatures and such are shown to celebrate the character and generosity of these two people just as much, if not more, than the armor they make.

That said-- I don't really look at all this like it's some sort of contest. I mean, Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors for a reason. Everyone likes somethin' different. :)

Heck, I have three sets of armor and 5 helmets in my house at the moment, and they're all from different makers.

They all have their own individual quirks and personalities, and that's what makes it fun!

I know my way around Photoshop pretty well-- if you want to send me a ri-rez pic of your AP, I'd be happy to make a signature for you. :duim:

  8. Excellent!! Thank you!

Wow... yeah, I didn't know that.

I also never knew that the drop boxes on good kits had a front and back! I've only ever had them on my FX and they are just the fronts... very nice, thanks!

    My TM has 'em too.

Kev (OSCS) makes the backs for the suits that don't include 'em.

    There's a run here somewhere.

I bought a set for the ATA, and they fit perfect. Reportedly, they'll work with any TE-based kit.

  9. Noel-- thanks for posting this up... I'm gonna go ESB as well, so now I can sit on my duff and just take notes from your thread. :D

Mike's tutotrial suggests the Rustoleum "Painter's Touch" white sandable primer.

    rustoleum_primer.jpg

I used it on my ATA helmet, and was very happy with it.

Anrev in the Mountain Garrison makes a pretty sweet holster -- real leather; nice and thick. He offers them in ESB and ANH versions, even white for snowies. I'll send you a PM.

Bernard makes nice holsters as well, but the material is a bit thinner, and I'm not certain if he does ESB/ROTJ ones.

From everything I've seen and read, the holster is simply looped over the belt.

As for belts -- I think Wyatt *might* still have an open run on his cargo strap ones. I haven't got one, but the pictures I've seen look like the REAL DEAL. If it's not the exact material as the film, it's pretty dang close.

FireBladeJedi and GundamZepplin make awesome canvas belts... I have one of each, and they both rock.

As for the other stuff... I've got my pen and paper handy so I can poach info. :D

Thanks again for starting this thread-- I have a lot of the same questions you do, so I'll be following along with keen interest, if that's okay. :)

  10. I'm not gonna lie-- I think a lot of it would absolutely make your blood boil, Paul.

It can get pretty incendiary, and some of it really pisses me off too.

But it's an almost 1:1 ratio-- the complaints about the FISD almost always come from guys who were kicked out of the FISD.

The axe-grinders are pretty obvious, and I chalk a lot of it up to guys blowing off steam.

I don't agree with it, but I don't take any of it to heart either.

I filter out the negative stuff, sidestep the "outlaw" posturing and focus on the good things it has to offer.

I dunno... I try not to raise a fuss in either venue.

I just want to learn more about the hobby and make friends with fellow TK crazies. :D

  11. Paul-- I totally hear where you're coming from... I think you're asking from a place of genuine philosophical and ethical curiosity...

In kind, please know that I'm coming from a totally honest, respectful place as well...

    Full disclosure:

    I'm a member at DIY.

    I'm AGAINST recasting.

I'm ALL ABOUT the FISD and the 501st.

    That said...

Please judge people by their BEHAVIOR, not their URL history.

Guilt by association isn't guilt. Period.

It's making a pretty bold assumption to assert that an ENTIRE web forum shares one single opinion.

Seriously-- do you want to be accountable for each and every comment that's made here on the FISD?

I certainly wouldn't expect you to.

Yes, there's some chuckle-head stuff that goes on at DIY. It gets wild and woolly. No question.

I find myself rolling my eyes at some of the crap that goes on there.

    But you know what?

There's also some FANTASTIC people, and some SERIOUS love for and knowledge about stormtroopers.

Alongside the occasional dumba$$ remark-- which are RIDICULOUSLY easy to spot and ignore, BTW; the people who make those comments aren't known for their subtlety -- there's also some incredibly helpful tutorials,

great photos, interesting TK history, and amazing human beings. (And some not-so amazing people too; a category I'm sure I fall into in some folks' opinion)

Like every endeavor involving human beings, it's hopelessly flawed, and occasionally great.

You gotta take the good with the bad.

If you think my loyalties are split, or that I lack integrity because I have a different browser cache than you-- that's your prerogative -- but it's pretty irrational, if you ask me.

My attitude, my behavior, and my actions are IDENTICAL on both sites.

The goofy dork you guys see on whitearmor is the same goofy dork that visits doityourself.

I have NO problem with how I conduct myself on either forum, and frankly, neither should you.

Unless I'm breaking the rules here, or shilling recast armor-- which I'll repeat: I am AGAINST -- I don't think there should be a problem.

I have nothing but respect for everyone here, and I like to think I comport myself that way.

If I've ever acted disrespectfully or unfairly towards anyone here, I sincerely apologize.

But with that said-- frankly, it's none of anyone's business which other sites I frequent, so long as my actions are civil, ethical, and in keeping with this venue's terms of membership.

I absolutely love this hobby, and I absolutely love the FISD.

I've made great friends here, and I've seen a dream I had since I was a little kid come true, thanks to help from all the amazing people here.

And I admit it-- I'm obsessed, guys. :D

I go outside of this forum for my TK fix.

Like a lot of you, I read, watch and study everything and anything I can get my hands on that's TK-related.

So yeah-- I check out DIY every once in a while as well.

If you want to hold that against me, you're free to do so, but I think it's unfortunate.

Paul -- I think you're a great guy, a fantastic leader, and I deeply appreciate everything you do around here. The FISD simply wouldn't be what it is without you...

But with all due respect-- I think you're off the mark here.

You're well within your rights and duties to monitor and act on events that happen within the Legion and this detachment, but I think it's kind of lame to call out every member of website, when not everyone there participates in the stuff you have a beef with.

As you probably know, DIY has members who are on the Detachment Staff here... do you really think they're "anti-Legion"?

I like to look at pictures of Rolf's Sandtrooper. I'm not hocking TE2 knockoffs on eBay.

It's not fair to lump everyone in the same boat, or to imply that we're all subversive, or confrontational.

    We're not.

You've always been straightforward and honest with me, Paul, so I'll pay you the consideration of doing the same: it's feeling a little witch-hunty.

We're talking about a couple of websites on the INTERNET.

Websites dedicated to stormtroopers... FICTIONAL CHARACTERS.... not KKK recruitment sites, or kiddie porn, or Al Qaeda's latest streaming video.

    Just sayin'.

    Respectfully,

    Doug

P.S. -- sorry for the novel... I tend to turn into a windbag when I'm trying to make a point. :D

  12. I often wonder how strange it must be for actors like Mr. Bulloch and Anthony Forrest to receive so much slavish adulation for what amounts to about 10 minutes of screen time, and virtually no speaking lines.

It's definitely a testament to the power and endurance of Star Wars and their performances, but I have to imagine they think we're all pretty loony. :D:P

  13. If you're referring to the shoulder straps (underneath the bumpy plastic ones) they can be black or white as far as I know.

There's no requirements, either EIB, or for the 501st, regarding the elastic/webbing under the shoulder straps.

From the photos I've seen, I think the move suits used white nylon webbing.

BTW-- Eric, I've said it before, but that rig looks SICK!

  14. Is it because they are of lesser quality?

Nope. The particular maker I'm thinking of prefers to stay out of all the "he said/she said" garbage that surrounds the trooper world sometimes.

The pulls aren't quite as sharp as some others, but it's good stuff, for sure.

And to quote Forrest Gump-- "That's all I have to say about that". :D
